The Reconciliation of the BrothersThe Reconciliation of the Brothers
Genesis 45:1 NETJoseph was no longer able to control himself before all his attendants, so he
cried out, "Make everyone go out from my presence!"
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
No one remained with Joseph when he made himself known to his brothers. 2 He wept
loudly; the Egyptians heard it and Pharaoh's
household heard about it.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
3 Joseph said to his brothers, "I am Joseph! Is my father still alive?" His brothers could not
answer him because they were dumbfounded
before him.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
4 Joseph said to his brothers, "Come closer
to me," so they came near. Then he said, "I am
Joseph your brother, whom you sold into
Egypt.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
5 Now, do not be upset and do not be angry with yourselves because you sold me here, for God
sent me ahead of you to preserve life!
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
6 For these past two years there has been famine in
the land and for five more years there will be
neither plowing nor harvesting.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
7 God sent me ahead of you to preserve you on the earth and to save your lives by a great
deliverance.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
8 So now, it is not you who sent me here, but God.
He has made me an adviser to Pharaoh, lord over all his household, and ruler over all the
land of Egypt.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
9 Now go up to my father quickly and tell him,
'This is what your son Joseph says: "God has
made me lord of all Egypt. Come down to
me; do not delay!
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
God has put the right person, in the right place,
to do the right job. Remember He promised Abram his descendents would be slaves for 400
years.
The Reconciliation of the The Reconciliation of the BrothersBrothers
Through Joseph, God is not only saving many lives,
including Abraham’s family, from the famine,
but also putting Abraham’s descendents in place to
become slaves as promised.
Jacob goes to EgyptJacob goes to Egypt Genesis 46:1 NET So Israel
began his journey, taking with him all that he had. When he came to Beer
Sheba he offered sacrifices to the God of
his father Isaac.
Jacob goes to EgyptJacob goes to Egypt2 God spoke to Israel in a
vision during the night and said, "Jacob,
Jacob!" He replied, "Here I am!"
Jacob goes to EgyptJacob goes to Egypt3 He said, "I am God, the
God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation
there.
Jacob goes to EgyptJacob goes to EgyptGod promises Jacob Egypt is where he will become a great nation.
He promises to go with Jacob into Egypt, and to bring him out from there.
Jacob goes to EgyptJacob goes to Egypt4 I will go down with you to Egypt and I myself will certainly bring you back from there. Joseph will
close your eyes."
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobNow we come to the end of Jacob’s life. As seems to be the custom he calls in his sons to proclaim
blessings on them.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobGenesis 48:11 NET Israel said
to Joseph, "I never expected to see you
again, but now God has allowed me to see your
children too."
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob12 So Joseph moved them
from Israel's knees and bowed down with his face to the ground. 13
Joseph positioned them;
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacobhe put Ephraim on his right hand across from Israel's left hand, and Manasseh on his left hand across
from Israel's right hand. Then Joseph brought them
closer to his father.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob14 Israel stretched out his right hand and placed it
on Ephraim's head, although he was the
younger.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobCrossing his hands, he put
his left hand on Manasseh's head, for
Manasseh was the firstborn.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob15 Then he blessed Joseph and said, "May the God before whom my fathers
Abraham and Isaac walked — the God who
has been my shepherd all my life long to this day,
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob16 the Angel who has protected me from all
harm — bless these boys. May my name be named in them, and the name of my fathers Abraham and
Isaac.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobMay they grow into a
multitude on the earth." 17 When Joseph saw that
his father placed his right hand on Ephraim's head, it displeased him.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobSo he took his father's hand to move it from
Ephraim's head to Manasseh's head. 18
Joseph said to his father, "Not so, my father, for this is the firstborn.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobPut your right hand on his
head." 19 But his father refused and said, "I
know, my son, I know. He too will become a nation and he too will become
great.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobIn spite of this, his
younger brother will be even greater and his
descendants will become a multitude of nations."
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob20 So he blessed them that day, saying, "By you will Israel bless, saying, May
God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.'
" So he put Ephraim before Manasseh.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob21 Then Israel said to Joseph, "I am about to
die, but God will be with you and will bring you back to the land of your
fathers.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobGenesis 49:1 NET
Jacob called for his sons and said, "Gather
together so I can tell you what will happen to you

to Israel, your father.

The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob4 You are destructive like water and will not excel,
for you got on your father's bed, then you
defiled it — he got on my couch!
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobReuben as the first-born had a right
to a double portion of all that the father had; see Deu. 21:17
The eminence or dignity mentioned here may refer to the priesthood;
the power, to the regal government or kingdom -
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobIn this sense it has been understood by
all the ancient Targumists. Targum, T`ARGUM, n. A translation or paraphrase of the sacred Scriptures in
the Chaldee language or dialect. Of these the Targum of Jonathan, and
that of Onkelos, are held in most esteem by the Jews. (Webster’s)
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobThe Targum of Onkelos
paraphrases it thus: “Thou shouldst have received three
portions, the birthright, the priesthood, and the kingdom:” and
to this the Targums of Jonathan ben Uzziel and Jerusalem add:
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob“But because thou hast sinned, the birthright is given to Joseph, the kingdom to Judah, and the
priesthood to Levi.”That the birthright was given to the sons of Joseph we have the fullest proof from 1 Chronicles 5:1.

The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob5 Simeon and Levi are brothers, weapons of
violence are their knives! 6 O my soul, do not come into their council, do not
be united to their assembly,
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacobmy heart, for in their anger they have killed men, and for pleasure they have hamstrung
oxen.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob7 Cursed be their anger,
for it was fierce, and their fury, for it was
cruel. I will divide them in Jacob, and scatter
them in Israel!
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobSimeon & Levi are the
ones who slaughtered the men of Shechem after their sister Dinah was
raped. Remember Jacob was very upset with them
for doing this.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob This is the reason for their “blessing” if you
want to call it that. The last part of verse 7
indicates neither of these sons will inherit their
own land.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobThe tribe of Simeon received
only cities and towns in the land of Judah.
Joshua 19:8 NET as well as all the towns around these cities as far as Baalath
Beer (Ramah of the Negev).
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobThis was the land
assigned to the tribe of Simeon by its clans. 9
Simeon’s assigned land was taken from Judah's
allotted portion,

land within Judah. Levi also received no separate
inheritance in the land, but merely a number of cities to
dwell in,
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacobscattered throughout the
possessions of his brethren. (Josh
21:1-40) But the scattering of Levi in Israel was changed into a blessing for the other tribes through its election to the
priesthood.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobOf this transformation of the curse into a blessing, there
is not the slightest intimation in Jacob's address; and in this we have a strong proof
of its genuineness. (K&D)
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob8 Judah, your brothers

convey the idea of being washed by the blood of
Christ.

Judah’s mother Leah named him properly.
His name signifies praise.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobKing David and his

The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob13 Zebulun will live by the
haven of the sea and become a haven for
ships; his border will extend to Sidon.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobZebulun means “dwelling,” to which there is an allusion in the first clause of the verse. “At the
haven of seas.” This tribe touched upon the coast of the
sea of Kinnereth and of the Mediterranean.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobIt probably possessed some havens
for shipping near the promontory of Karmel: and its northwestern
boundary touched upon Phoenicia, the territory of Zidon. He is placed before Issakar, who
was older, because the latter sank into a subordinate position. (Barnes)

The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobDan, whose name signifies judgment, was the eldest of
Jacob’s sons by Bilhah, Rachel’s maid, and he is here promised an equal rule with those tribes that
sprang from either Leah or Rachel, the legal wives of Jacob.

of kings. Gad and Asher are placed before Naphtali, the
second son of Bilhah.
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of JacobWe cannot tell whether they were older, or for what other
reason they occupy this place. It may be that Naphtali was of a
less decisive or self-reliant character. (Barnes)
The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacob21 Naphtali is a free running doe, he

The Blessings of JacobThe Blessings of Jacoband the meaning of the prophecy
