Entertaining and informing foreigners since 1998, Fukuoka Now celebrates its 15th year in 2013. In the first issue of the new year, we warm up with a cuppa green tea, learn about healthy Chinese cuisine at Yakuzen Tenchi-Reishin, and chat with Canadian artist in Fukuoka - Michelle Zacharias. In this month's reader opinion piece "Whippersnappers are Saving the World", Matt Simpson (USA) calls Japanese school students "environmental messaihs" and urges adults to take a leaf out of their book. We're getting ready for our Valentine's Party, happening Feb. 8 at Hotel "With the Style". Details inside!

soon as they’re picked, and oxidize. Green tea

is not fermented, so it preserves the nutrients,

including catechin, carotene, and vitamins.

Here are some of green tea’s health benefits.

1. Prevents tooth decay and bad breath

Catechin limits the growth of the bacteria

causing tooth decay and freshens the mouth.

This effect is best achieved by drinking it af-

ter meals.

2. A pick-me-up that sobers you up

The caffeine provides a stimulus and clears

the head. This effect is best achieved by using

L inked to the authentic Japanese tea house Tagashira Tea

(founded 1930), this new cafe is a green tea lover’s dream

come true! Using luxurious Yame matcha and roasted

green tea from Kyoto, Tagashira Chaho’s menu features an array of

tea flavored parfaits, shakes and soft creams, along with 16 types

of regular hot tea. Take out available, but we recommend enjoying

the shop’s atmosphere and cheery staff! See map: B

W hen is the best time to drink

tea? In Japan, it’s the bev-

erage of choice to wake up

in the morning and drink

after meals, or during work. This month Fu-

kuoka Now focuses on green tea, the national

drink that is an essential part of Japan’s food

culture. Access our website to learn about

the drink’s history, varieties, how to enjoy

it, how to store it, its benefits, and where to

buy it in Fukuoka.

THE BENEFITS OF GREEN TEA

Tea is a perennial shrub in the Theaceae family.

Red pekoe tea is produced by fully fermenting

the leaves, oolong tea is produced by partially

fermenting the leaves, and green tea is not fer-

mented at all. The tea leaves are fermented as

hotter water.

3. Effectively burns body fat

The caffeine promotes the metabolism of fat.

Drinking green tea and engaging in physical

activity burns up body fat.

4. Beautifies the skin

Drinking tea maintains the skin’s elasticity,

and the vitamin C strengthens the capillar-

ies. It also improves the skin’s ability to re-

tain warmth.

5. Prevents hardening of the arteries and

high blood pressure

Tea reduces the cholesterol in the blood and

prevents high blood pressure.

6. Protects against colds

Green tea strengthens the body’s defenses

against infection, so using it as a gargle pro-

tects against viruses.

7. Prevents aging

Tea’s strong antibacterial properties limit oxi-

dation in the body and maintains a pH balance

by promoting the body’s alkalinity.

8. Prevents food poisoning

The catechin has a powerful effect on the bac-

teria causing food poisoning. It also regulates

intestinal functions. It was a wise decision to

pair sushi with green tea.

RECOMMENDED TEA SHOPS

Fukuoka City has many shops specializing

in tea, including long-established tea mer-

chants and new cafe style shops. We shot this

month’s cover at Tagashira Chaho on B1F of

the IMS Building.

hit the world stage with this speech gone

viral-video, at twelve. She was an intelligent,

confident, plain spoken, and perhaps most

importantly tuned-in, and turned-on to sci-

she is exactly the role-model I want my kid to

emulate. Don’t you? The Board of Education

does. That’s why she’s in the book!

However, there are two bits of irony here

which raise my proverbial dodesho eyebrow.

First is that this role-model is Canadian. Yes,

she is ethnically half Japanese, and this is an

English textbook, but I must ask; where are

the Japanese teenage role-models? I know

they exist. Why not include some in the text-

books? I want my kid to be proud that he is

Japanese. Kids are smart. They know what

we are saying. Can we expect our children to

better, perhaps as “The Girl Who Silenced the

World for 5 Minutes.” How did she earn such

an eminent moniker? She dared to browbeat

every adult on Earth for six minutes, and forty

seconds! Google her. Have a listen. I dare, YOU!

The people who put together the text-

modern heroine to include in our children’s

reading for plenty of great reasons.

She formed the Environmental Children’s

big, scary world of adults, if we have given

them no role models with which they identify?

The second bit of irony is that Severn’s

poignant 1992 message directly addresses

adults. So I have pulled it out of our children’s

textbooks, to EChO it here, now, again.

You see, JHS students walk to school, rain

or shine. They don’t use a drop of gas, not even

oil for a bicycle chain. They wear no make-up.

Their hairstyles are simple. They possess a

basic uniform wardrobe. They rely on paper,

and pencils, not fancy electronic gizmos. They

have a simple chair, and desk. They recycle all

their garbage.

They even reuse functional, but aging

So the next time we are idling a huge,

Students tolerate summer’s heat, and hu-

In Fukuoka

Michelle Zacharias is a Canadian artist and has lived in Japan for over

20 years. She works mainly in colored pencil. Although Michelle has

often found her intricate and colorful style too conservative for some

and too artsy for others, she was awarded a prize last year at the

International Exhibition of Art and Design in Kyoto. Michelle maintains that her

art has never been commercial or conceptual – for her, art is about enjoying the

work you do. Having

grown up in Winni-

peg, a real “incuba-

tor” for artistic com-

munities, Michelle

often thinks about

how to encourage

artists in Fukuoka to

talk and share ideas.

She hopes that her

upcoming exhibition

with Elida Maria Matsumoto at Konya Gallery will contribute towards this dialogue.

Konya’s flexible space is the perfect place to display colorful art to stave off the

winter blues. The exhibition will take place from 2/11~2/17. Make sure to check the

webpage for details of an artists talk: http://konya2023.travelers-project.info/.
