“YOUR SURF AUTHORITY”

EXPERT ADVICE & FRIENDLY STAFF

NEWSLETTER JANUARY 2010 VOLUME 2 ISSUE 7 Aloha Friends,

Happy New Year! Welcome to 2010?

Last month we saw some huge surf for the north shore. The Eddie Aikau contest was held for the first time since 2005 with VERY large conditions. I don’t ever remember that many people watching a surfing con-test before. Some guys told me they went the night before and there were already people camped out. Crazy.

The Triple Crown finished up with Joel Parkinson winning the overall title for the Triple Crown.

Mick Fanning was crowned 2009 ASP World Champ. He clinched the title during round 3 of the Pipe Masters after Joel lost to local Gavin Gillette.

Kekoa Bacalso and Coco Ho were named 2009 ASP Rookie Of The Year.

In this issue we take a look at the newest model from Donald Takayama...the “Opihi”.

Dusty Payne (HAW), 19, turned a

lot of heads in 2008/2009...A LOT.

The youngster from Maui finished

off ’08 with an incredible run in the

Vans Triple Crown before launching

an all out assault on the surfing

world in 2009. Bagging mind-

blowing sections in both the heavily-

touted Modern Collective and Vol-

com BS! films (and awarded Surfer

Poll’s Video Performer of the Year

for the latter), Payne also decimated

competition on the ASP World

Qualifying Series (WQS) to qualify

for the 2010 ASP Dream Tour. The

first surfer from Maui to ever do so,

Dusty has already sent shockwaves

through the surfing elite with his

progressive approach, and next year

will see the young natural-footer

amongst the world’s best.

Surfersvillage Global Surf News, 12 De-

cember, 2009 : - - Aloha and Congratula-

tions to Mick Fanning who is the 2009

World Surfing Champion. His Title was

sealed today at the Billabong Pipeline Mas-

ters when fellow Title contender and good

friend Joel Parkinson lost his 3rd round heat.

Ironically they were both in the water at the

same time because of the overlapping heat

format being used for the contest. Parko was

one of the first to congratulate Mick and

helped carry him up the beach along with

fellow Cooly kid Dean Morrison.

“I’m just a bit overwhelmed right now and I

don’t quite know what to say,” Fanning said.

“It was hard out there. I was trying to get

ready for my heat and then Gavin (Gillette)

got that one score as I was paddling out and,

I don’t know, I just sort of slowed down.”

The Billabong Pipe Masters is likely to con-

tinue tomorrow and bring the event and sea-

son to a final conclusion.

SURF TRAVEL

I don’t think I’ve ever taken a surf trip during the winter...hmm let me think...no I can’t recall taking a surf trip in the winter months. I do however recall taking a bunch of snowboarding trips, and although I haven't in years ,I’ve been seriously considering it lately. A friend of mine just emailed me from Japan about going boarding this upcoming spring. Japan is such an awesome place to go snowboarding. The last two times I snowboarded were in Hokkaido. I love that place, if it wasn't so cold I’d like to live there. They have big mountains and tons of snow. If you like the powder that’s one place you have to go. The first thing everyone asks is “is it expensive?” The answer to that questions is of course it’s ex-pensive. I think snowboarding in general is an expensive sport. Imag-ine having to pay $70 a day to surf? But, if you know when and where to find them , you can get good deals. I paid about $300 for a 4 night package that included: round trip air-fare from Tokyo, 3 day/night lift pass, and ski in –ski out accommoda-tions. Food and drinks were extra but who cares because the food tastes so darn good there. It wouldn't have mattered if there wasn't any snow though, you could eat and drink and be merry. Getting there is very easy. I would recommend staying a few days in To-kyo or Osaka either before or after you return from Hokkaido. You can get 3 full days of riding, 3 days in Tokyo, and be back in Hawaii all in about a week. Japan Airlines has several daily flights from Haneda to Chitose Airport in Sapporo, and most of the hotels in Niseko can arrange transportation to and from the airport. Just keep in mind that weather conditions can change quickly so be prepared for delays. If I remember, I think it was a 2 hour bus ride from Chitose to Niseko. The bus drivers made me nervous for the first half hour, those guys would blaze it up the narrow, twisting mountain roads in the snow. I thought for sure we were going to skid off the side of the cliff and end up in the river below. Good thing those guys drive in snow everyday and know how its done.

I think later in the season is a good time to go like March. The weather tends to be nicer and the snow is still really good...plus the prices are lower and that’s when you can find the cheap packages. Try to avoid going in Feb, that’s when the Ice Festival happens in Sapporo. It attracts thousands of people so good luck getting a flight in or out.

The absolute best part of snowboarding in Hokkaido is going to one of the many outdoor onsens (hot springs) in the area. You can soak your sore muscles in the onsen after snowboarding all day. And because it’s outdoors , there might be snow falling all around, and keeping you beer chilled is easy, just stick um in the snow. Still undecided if I’m gonna get to go snowboarding this spring but if I do you’ll here about it here. www.snowjapan.com is a good place to find lots of information.

Finally, after years of anticipation and encourage-ment from his team, Donald Takayama has come out with his new Opihi Model. Basically the Ophi takes two of Donald’s most popu-lar designs and combines them into 1 board. The Opihi has an In The Pink nose and a DT-2 tail. It is available in various sizes ranging from mini to standard longboard. We are the very first shop in the nation to get this new model.

TAKAYAMA’S

NEW

“OPIHI” MODEL

FEATURED BOARD 8’0” X 23” X 3”

The Burnside is your complete all-around short board. It features a deep single concave with subtle entry rocker for speed and slightly added tail lift for high performance surfing in the pocket. If you only have one board this is board you need.
