We Must Have FaithWe Must Have Faith
I hope we adequately covered the book of Job in last week’s lesson. With that in mind, I decided to
base today’s lesson on yesterday’s reading.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
I think we can learn from the belief, faith, Abraham had that God would do what he
said He’d do.I take you back to part of
January’s 1st reading.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaithHebrews 11:1 NET Now faith is
being sure of what we hope for, being
convinced of what we do not see. 2 For by it the people of old received God's commendation.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
3 By faith we understand that the worlds were set
in order at God's command, so that the
visible has its origin in the invisible.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith4 By faith Abel offered
God a greater sacrifice than Cain, and through
his faith he was commended as righteous, because God commended
him for his offerings.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaithAnd through his faith he
still speaks, though he is dead. 5 By faith Enoch was
taken up so that he did not see death, and he was not to be found because
God took him up.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
For before his removal he had been commended as
having pleased God. 6 Now without faith it is impossible to please him,
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
for the one who approaches God must
believe that he exists and that he rewards those
who seek him.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
7 By faith Noah, when he was warned about things
not yet seen, with reverent regard
constructed an ark for the deliverance of his
family.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
Through faith he condemned the world and became an heir of the righteousness that
comes by faith.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith8 By faith Abraham obeyed
when he was called to go out to a place he would
later receive as an inheritance, and he went
out without understanding where he was going.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith9 By faith he lived as a
foreigner in the promised land as though it were a foreign country, living in
tents with Isaac and Jacob, who were fellow
heirs of the same promise.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
10 For he was looking forward to the city with firm foundations, whose architect and builder is
God.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith11 By faith, even though
Sarah herself was barren and he was too old, he received the ability to procreate, because he
regarded the one who had given the promise to be
trustworthy.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
12 So in fact children were fathered by one man — and this one as good as
dead — like the number of stars in the sky and like
the innumerable grains of sand on the seashore.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith13 These all died in faith
without receiving the things promised, but they saw
them in the distance and welcomed them and
acknowledged that they were strangers and
foreigners on the earth.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
14 For those who speak in such a way make it clear that they are seeking a
homeland.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith
15 In fact, if they had been thinking of the land that they had left, they would have had opportunity to
return.
We Must Have We Must Have FaithFaith16 But as it is, they aspire
to a better land, that is, a heavenly one. Therefore, God is not ashamed to be called their God, for he has prepared a city for
them.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
Genesis 12:1 NETNow the LORD said to Abram, "Go out from
your country, your relatives, and your
father's household to the land that I will show you.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
The Call. - The word of Jehovah, by which Abram was called, contained a command and a promise. Abram was to leave all - his country, his kindred and his father's house - and to follow
the Lord into the land which He would show him.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
Thus he was to trust entirely to the guidance of God, and to follow wherever He might
lead him. (K&D)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
2 Then I will make you into a great nation, and I will bless you, and I will make your name great,
so that you will exemplify divine blessing.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbramAnd I will make of thee a great
nation,.... In a literal sense, as the people of the Jews were that descended from him, and in a spiritual sense believers in all
ages and of all nations, that walk in the steps of the faith of
Abram, who are his children, and are blessed with him: (Gill)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
“And bless thee.” The place of his birth and kindred was the scene of all his past earthly
joys. But the Lord will make up the loss to him in a purer and safer scene of temporal
prosperity.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram“And make thy name great.” This
was to compensate him for his father’s house. He was to be the patriarch of a new house,
on account of which he would be known and venerated all
over the world. (Barnes)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbramThe four members of this promise are
not to be divided into two parallel members, in which case the athnach
(Hebrew punctuation) would stand in the wrong place; but are to be regarded as an ascending climax, expressing four elements of the salvation promised to
Abram, the last of which is still further expanded in Gen.12:3. (K&D)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
3 I will bless those who bless you, but the one
who treats you lightly I must curse, and all the
families of the earth will bless one another by
your name."
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbramAnd in thee shall all families of the
earth be blessed; that is, in his seed, as in Gen 22:18 and which is
interpreted of Christ, Acts 3:25 meaning not every individual
of all the families or nations of the earth;
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbrambut that as many as believe in Christ, of
all nations, are blessed in him; and that whoever of them are blessed,
they are blessed and only blessed in him, and that they are blessed for his sake with all spiritual blessings; such as redemption, justification, remission of sins, sanctification, adoption, and
eternal life. (Gill)
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To Abram
Genesis 22:18 LITV And in your Seed shall all the nations
of the earth be blessed because you have obeyed
My voice.
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To Abram
Genesis 22:18 GW Through your descendant all the nations of the earth will be blessed, because you
have obeyed me."
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To AbramActs 3:25 LITV You are sons of
the prophets and of the covenant which God
appointed to our fathers, saying to Abraham, "Even
in your Seed all the families of the earth shall be
blessed."
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To AbramActs 3:25 GW You are the
descendants of the prophets and the heirs of the promise
that God made to our ancestors when he said to Abraham, 'Through your descendant all people on
earth will be blessed.'
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
4 So Abram left, just as the LORD had told him to do, and Lot went with
him. (Now Abram was 75 years old when he
departed from Haran.)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
5 And Abram took his wife Sarai, his nephew Lot, and all the possessions they had accumulated and the people they had acquired in Haran, and they left for the land of Canaan. They entered the
land of Canaan.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbramAbram believed that the blessing of
the Almighty would make up for all he could lose or leave behind, supply all his wants, and answer and exceed all his desires; and he
knew that nothing but misery would follow disobedience. Such believers, being justified by faith in Christ, have peace with God.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
They hold on their way to Canaan. They are not discouraged by the
difficulties in their way, nor drawn aside by the delights they meet
with. Those who set out for heaven must persevere to the end.
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbramWhat we undertake, in obedience to
God's command, and in humble attendance on his providence, will
certainly succeed, and end with comfort at last. Canaan was not, as
other lands, a mere outward possession, but a type of heaven,
and in this respect the patriarchs so earnestly prized it. (MHCC)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
Genesis 12:6 NET Abram traveled through the land as far as the oak tree of Moreh at Shechem. (At
that time the Canaanites were in the land.)
The Obedience of The Obedience of AbramAbram
The Hebrew word Moreh ה) moreh) means ,מֹוֶר
“teacher.” It may well be that the place of this great oak tree was a Canaanite shrine where instruction
took place. (NET notes)
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To Abram7 The LORD appeared to
Abram and said, "To your descendants I will
give this land." So Abram built an altar
there to the LORD, who had appeared to him.
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To AbramThis is the first time in the
Genesis’ verses we’ve read today where The Lord promises specific
land for Abram’s descendants.
The Promise To AbramThe Promise To AbramIt seems Abram’s faith is
still strong which is shown by what he does
next.
The Worship Of AbramThe Worship Of AbramAbram built an altar there to the
LORD, By way of gratitude and thankfulness for his kind and gracious appearance, and for the gift of the land of Canaan to his offspring; for on this altar he no
doubt offered sacrifice in a way of thanksgiving, as Noah did when he
came out of the ark. (Gill)
Abram Went Down to Abram Went Down to EgyptEgypt
A famine is upon the land so Abram flees to Egypt
for relief. In Abram’s visit in Egypt we might see some of his
character flaws.
A Time Of A Time Of WeaknessWeakness
Genesis 12:11 NET As he approached Egypt, he said to his wife Sarai, "Look, I know that you
are a beautiful woman. 12
When the Egyptians see you they will say,
A Time Of A Time Of WeaknessWeakness'This is his wife.' Then they
will kill me but will keep you alive. 13 So tell them you are my sister so that it may go well for me because of
you and my life will be spared on account of you."
A Time Of A Time Of WeaknessWeaknessBy this we learn not to use unlawful
means nor to put others in danger to save ourselves. Though it may appear that Abram did not fear
death, so much as dying without children, he acts as though God's promise had not taken place; in which appeared a weak faith.
(Geneva Bible Notes)
A Time Of A Time Of WeaknessWeaknessSay thou art my sister - The grace
Abram was most eminent for was faith, and yet he thus fell
through unbelief and distrust of the divine Providence, even after God had appeared to him twice. Alas, What will become of the willows, when the cedars are
thus shaken? (Wesley)
A Time Of A Time Of WeaknessWeakness
Okay, Abram had a weak moment, but was he a liar?
Genesis 20:12 NET What's more, she is indeed my sister, my father's daughter, but not my mother's daughter. She
became my wife.
Abram & Lot Part Abram & Lot Part WaysWaysAbram & Lot have parted
ways as their livestock was too much for the area to
support. Lot ends up settling next Sodom.
Abram settled in Canaan. War breaks out.
Abram & Lot Part Abram & Lot Part WaysWaysLot and all his possessions
are captured. Abram rallies his men to war
and saves Lot.As he returns
Melchizedek comes out to meet him.
MelchizedekMelchizedekGenesis 14:18 NET Melchizedek
king of Salem brought out bread and wine.
(Now he was the priest of the Most High God.)
MelchizedekMelchizedek19 He blessed Abram,
saying, "Blessed be Abram by the Most High God, Creator of heaven
and earth.
MelchizedekMelchizedek20 Worthy of praise is the
Most High God, who delivered your enemies into your hand." Abram
gave Melchizedek a tenth of everything.
MelchizedekMelchizedekThe Rabbins (French for Rabbi) say, that Melchizedek was Shem the son of Noah, who was
king and priest to those that descended from him,
according to the patriarchal model.
MelchizedekMelchizedekMany Christian writers have
thought that this was an appearance of the Son of God
himself, our Lord Jesus, known to Abram at this time
by this name. But as nothing is expressly revealed concerning it, we can determine nothing.
MelchizedekMelchizedekHe brought forth bread and wine - For the refreshment of Abram and his soldiers, and in congratulation of their victory. This he did as a king. As priest of the most high
God he blessed Abram, which we may suppose a greater refreshment to Abram than his bread and wine
were. (Wesley)
MelchizedekMelchizedekA tenth part of all the spoils he had
taken from the confederate kings. These Abram gave as a tribute to
the most high God, who, being the possessor of heaven and earth,
dispenses all spiritual and temporal favors, and demands the gratitude, and submissive, loving obedience,
of all his subjects. (Clarke)
Jesus Christ Our Jesus Christ Our MelchizedekMelchizedekWhen we have received some great
mercy from God, it is very fit we should express our thankfulness by
some special act of pious charity. Jesus Christ, our great Melchizedek, is to have homage done him, and to be
humbly acknowledged as our King and Priest; not only the tithe of all, but all
we have, must be given up to him. (MHCC)
Faith in what God says, He’ll do! Abram was 75 when he was called on to
have this faith. He showed his faith by doing what he
was told.
Jesus Christ Our Jesus Christ Our MelchizedekMelchizedek
More than this, he had faith in future events God said
would come about.Yes, he had times of
weakness when his faith didn’t show. He over came that and continued as God
would have him go.
Jesus Christ Our Jesus Christ Our MelchizedekMelchizedek
Jesus Christ Our Jesus Christ Our MelchizedekMelchizedek
Does our faith even come close to comparing with
his? Jesus said He would come back for us. Do we, like Abram, show our faith in this by doing what we’re
told in God’s Word?
