And for 2013, the most technologically advanced Lexus ever has a new face and an all-new F SPORT model: The LS.

Sarah wanted to buy a new car, but she didn’t have a lot of money to spend. She looked around online and found a one-owner, shiny red Mercedes-Benz just under five years old for half the price of similar cars she had looked at around town. She contacted the seller who explained that he had recently lost his job and couldn’t afford the payments on his luxury vehicle anymore and needed to sell it quick. He offered her a buyer’s protection plan and set up a date for delivery. Sarah was so excited she sent the money via Paypal that very night and place her car for sale in the local paper the next morning. Delivery day came and went. No shiny red Mercedes-Benz and no refund. In fact when she went back to contact the seller, his information had disappeared from the website she found him on.

Sarah’s story is one of many. While shopping online is often convenient, it comes with many dangers.

A recent USA Today article, “Used car scams: It’s easi-er to get burned on the Internet” found that car troubles — including misrepresentations in ads, faulty repairs and scams involving used car sales — are among the top complaints made to state and local consumer protection agencies, according to a survey by the Consumer Fed-eration of America and the North American Consumer Protection Investigators.

The article said “the complaints about online ads re-lating to used cars, though, can be far broader in scope, as con artists have netted more than $50 million in the past four years. Based on data provided by the FBI, the Internet Crime Complaint Center has received 1,685 auto-auction fraud complaints with a reported loss of $4.9 million this year through July 31. In all of 2011, the Internet Crime Complaint Center received 4,066 auto-auction fraud complaints with $8.3 million in reported losses.”

Keith Caldarera, General Manager at Riverside Acura, said he’s seen first-hand customers who have been victims of online car buying scams. He said often, a good-looking car is advertised at an amazing price and that “buyer pro-

tection plans” are offered but are usually scams too. Caldarera said that even Carfax reports can’t tell you

In the USA Today article, Jack Christin Jr., associate general counsel for eBay Motors in San Jose, said con-sumers should watch for any used car sale that starts on Craigslist or elsewhere — but then the seller supposedly moves the transaction to another website, such as eBay Motors. Christin stressed that a hard-luck story — a sick child or a lost job or a divorce — is used to hook poten-tial buyers into believing that the low price is engineered for a quick sale. Scammers don’t often offer a $10,000 minivan for $800. Usually, the sales price is a deep dis-count but a bit more believable.

What buyers don’t want to do is pay a stranger for a used car or any item via Western Union or MoneyGram. Even putting that money on a store-bought prepaid card could be a great way to lose cash, if you don’t know the seller.

Taking the time to browse the lots at local automo-tive dealerships is really the best way to buy a vehicle. The sales teams are typically up-to-date on current of-fers, average sale prices, and can help you look for the vehicle you want, even if it’s not currently on their lot. You can also build lasting relationships with the people at the dealership. They can help you keep your car ser-viced, and in some cases will offer additional discounts for returning customers when it’s time to trade up.

One sign of a scam: The con artist in a used-car scam may refuse to meet the buyer in person or even allow a vehicle inspection — claiming they’re moving soon or they need to rush the sale.

Don’t get caught up in a long sob story. Do not use a money transfer service, such as West-

Be careful if you get an e-mail saying you won a top bid for an auction for a used car. It’s best to go back to the online auto-auction site to double-check. Con artists can capture e-mail addresses and contact you directly about cars being sold by someone else.

Think twice about dealing with someone in another country.

Beware if you are asked to pay by loading cash onto a store-bought prepaid card. Consumer agencies say the cards are an easy way for scammers to get cash and not get caught.

Now made in America: 2013 Nissan Leaf is cheaper, charges quickerBy Consumer Reports NewsThis week, Nissan started building its Leaf electric cars in the United States. In addition to local production, the 2013 model year also brings several improvements to the Leaf, including a lower base price, faster charger, and some additional options.A new trim level, S, has been added to the bottom of the Leaf lineup, which Nissan CEO Carlos Ghosn says will be cheaper than last year’s base price of $35,200. The S will have steel wheels, halogen headlights (instead of LEDs), and no navigation system or remote charger interface. In place of the standard backup camera that displayed an image on the navigation screen, the S will have an op-tional backup camera with a smaller screen. Pricing has not yet been announced.Above that, SV and SL models will receive a faster 6.6-kW onboard charger, which should allow recharges in about four hours from a dedicated 240-volt, Level 2 electric car charger. A Japanese-standard ChadeMo DC fast-charge port will remain optional. The SV will also lose the standard LED lights, although they will be optional. New options on the SL will include a leather interior and Nissan’s Around View monitor for parking lot maneuvers.Nissan also claims the 2013 Leaf will have a slightly longer range, enabled by aerody-namic and other efficiency improvements. The EPA has not yet signed off on the range numbers.Other minor improvements for the 2013 Leaf include a flatter cargo floor and lighted, lock-able charge port door that can be released with the key fob.A lower price, more features, faster charging, and longer range should make the Leaf even more desirable to electric-car shoppers.
