Mrs. Jill Tamborello Interview by: Vance Richards

Tell us about your family. My husband Mark and I have three sons between us. My oldest son, Michael, is 19 and active duty Air Force and is currently stationed at Wright-Patterson AFB, OH. My youngest, Matthew, is 15 and a sophomore at Brennan High School in the Northside ISD. My step-son, Nick, is married and has two children, Serena and Xander. We also have an adorable Beagle, Abby. Which college(s) have you attended?

I earned my Bachelor’s in English from the University of Texas at San Antonio. I also attended UTSA for my teaching certification. What made you want to be a reading teacher?

Reading is the most important skill a person can acquire; it’s the driving force behind everything we do academically. I also have a natural love of literature and books. I love the fact that I can travel and meet people through the setting and characters found in a novel. Helping students strengthen their reading skills while showing them the endless possibilities literature has to offer is what led me to teach Reading. What are some of your hobbies?

Reading, of course! When I get the time, I enjoy scrapbooking. I also like gardening. This year I grew my own herbs which my husband cooks with because cooking is NOT one of my hobbies! Is there some other subject you may want to teach and why?

I’ve thought about getting my art certification but I don’t draw very well. History is another subject I find fascinating and would be interested in teaching. What are some places you have lived in or visited? I was born and lived in San Antonio most of my life. My boys’ dad was active duty Air Force so we also lived in Kentucky, Ohio, Iowa, and Louisiana before moving back to Texas in 2000. My youngest son was born at the hospital on Wright-Patterson where my oldest son currently works. I have had the opportunity to travel across the United States but have never been to Europe. Visiting there is definitely one of my dreams.

Stacey Angels save Christmas!!!!! Written by: Cristina Graham, Jorge Davila, and Emily Guitterez

FCCLA and the students of Mrs. Duron’s Family and Community Services class took it upon

themselves to provide a wonderful Christmas for a family in need. The Gonzales family had lost everything in a house fire just two months before Christmas. These amazing students made it their

duty to make sure the Gonzales family didn’t go without Christmas. Every opportunity that the students had was dedicated to creating the best Christmas that they could.

They worked hard making stockings, ornaments, a tree skirt, provided clothing, and bought presents for each person in the family. With the help of Mrs.Harvatin, they were able to provide

them with a Christmas tree. Then on December 17, 2010, FCCLA took a field trip to deliver all the decorations and gifts that they had been working on to the Gonzales family. All their hard work paid off when they saw the smiles and gratitude the Gonzales family had shown. Stacey Angels,

what will they do next?

The Media Center Gives Thanks

This beginning of the New Year is the perfect opportunity for wishing our LISD family a bright and happy 2011. We have so many wishes to send to our

students, families, friends, and staff -- it has been a wonderful school year so far, and there are many people to thank.

We thank our wonderful Lackland Elementary and Stacey campuses which provide students for us to serve and funds with which to build a supportive library program.

We are grateful to the LISD Administration and our wonderful School Board for the

wise leadership and decisions which impact so many.

A special wish for a great holiday season goes to the students who read and challenge us to provide them with the very best and most interesting resources available. We are thankful for you, and for your parents and family.

The faculty members are a rich blessing – you brighten our day, support our

programs, and share your favorite books with us.

We are surviving to the holiday break because of the willing hands and loving

hearts of our volunteers who give of their free time. Along the way they laugh with us, help us shelve books and give us fresh ideas for serving students. Thank you.

To the tremendous LISD support staff, tech folks, maintenance experts and

custodial friends – we hope every day of the vacation break is a great one for you. We so appreciate your support and friendship.

For each body that walks through the library, to all who smile and greet us: you encourage us every day, and we want to do the same.

To each individual in the LISD family: warmest wishes, and may your New Year be a prosperous and happy one. We look forward to seeing you in the library!

More Recycling Hints from your friendly

“Save the Earth” Team

Plastic With a little bit of care, much plastic can be recycled, and collection of plastics for recycling is increasing rapidly. Plastic recycling faces one huge problem: plastic types must not be mixed for recycling, yet it is impossible to tell one type from another by sight or touch. Even a small amount of the wrong type of plastic can ruin the melt. The plastic industry has responded to this problem by developing a series of cryptic markers, commonly seen on the bottom of plastic containers. These markers do not mean the plastic can be recycled, these makers do not mean the container uses recycled plastic. Despite the confusing use of the chasing arrow symbol, these markers only identify the plastic type.

Virtually everything made of plastic should be marked with a code. Not all types can actually be recycled. Types 1 and 2 are widely accepted in container form, and type 4 is sometimes accepted in bag form. Code 7 is for mixed or layered plastic with little recycling potential. You should place in your bin only those types of plastic listed by your local recycling agency! Due to fluctuating market conditions, some colors or shapes may be useless to the recycling agency.

Library Offers Encore Scholarship Fair By Sharon Amann Lackland Library

Parents looking for ways to pay for their children’s escalating education costs can do some

homework of their own away from home.

The Lackland Library will host its second Scholarship Fair on January 8 at 2 p.m. to help parents learn about scholarship and grant opportunities available on and off base.

“We had our first scholarship fair last year, and it was wildly successful,” said Lackland

Library Director, Ms. Lenore Shapiro. “There were so many people who needed this information, and we want to help again by having representatives of scholarship granting

organizations tell how much money they’re giving and how to get it.”

What many students and parents don’t know is that there are many private and local fraternal and service organizations who give yearly scholarships to students.

Scholarship Fair organizer Karen Allen-Mirabeau learned that valuable lesson about the

organizations attending the upcoming fair.

“Quite a few have not been able to give away their scholarship because no one knew about it to apply,” she said. “We want as many organizations as possible to talk to the Lackland

community about what they are doing to help deserving young people further their education. It’s a win-win situation.”

Families looking for scholarships and financial aid should first file their income taxes as early as possible because the tax return information is required for filling out the Free

Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

This application is used by all colleges and universities to decide financial aid packages, including grants and scholarships for incoming students.

For more Scholarship Fair information, call 671-3610.
