Where in the Jamestown School District do you work? Can you describe a typical day at Jefferson?

I work at Jefferson Middle School in the main office. An average day for me begins by logging in all the absences that were called in overnight. After that I contact parents for children who are chronically absent or who have not been called in for their absences. Typically, I try to express how important regular attendance is for the success of all children.

You recently returned back to Jefferson after a leave of absence. Would you like to share where you were and what you were doing?

I recently returned from a yearlong tour in the Middle East.  In addition to working in the attendance office here at Jefferson, I also am a Staff Sergeant in the Army and was instructing Basic Leader Course.  This is a course designed to prepare future military leaders with the skills necessary to move forward and effectively lead and communicate.  I also became certified as a Sexual Assault/Harassment Victim Advocate.  This has become a major focus for my military career.  Assisting victims (survivors) in their recovery is rewarding and necessary.

What did you want to be when you were in middle school?

I wanted to be an attorney when I was 12. I even interviewed an attorney and shadowed him at work to get a better understanding.

What is the hardest thing about being an Attendance Clerk in the school district?

By the nature of the job, many people I come in contact with are not in their best situation and are often upset or defensive.

What is the best part about your job?

Seeing students improve in attendance and subsequently in their classes is rewarding.

Did someone inspire you to get where you are today? Who and how?

I have had a lot of support to get here. The most inspirational people I know are my two daughters. Both have this incredible spirit that pushes me forward.

April 2019

You’ve done a lot of traveling lately. Where is the most interesting place you visited and why?

My favorite place that I have been recently is Kurdistan in northern Iraq. It was not what I expected. It was green and beautiful. When I got there I hadn’t seen grass in 4 months and there hadn’t been rain in 3 months. It began raining as our flight landed and I was so excited to smell the clean air. The people were humble and sweet. The food was amazing, local cheese, fresh dates, local yogurt.

What current student trends baffle you right now?

Students don’t seem to respect themselves or value themselves. The messages they send one another and the things they share that should be personal and private scare me and I can’t understand why they do it.

What’s your favorite flavor of ice cream?

I don’t actually like ice cream. I do like sorbet though. Mango and Raspberry are my favorites.

What do you usually eat for breakfast?

Plain Oatmeal or Coconut Yogurt

Do you have a favorite sports team?

Philadelphia Eagles

What’s your favorite book and why?

I’m not sure I have a favorite book, but I love to read alternative history books. Currently, I’m reading “Destiny Disrupted”. It’s a world history from the Islamic perspective.

If you could pass on any bit of wisdom to our students and their families, what would you share?

Education is your ticket to anywhere. It’s a gift, because it’s free, you just have to show up and listen. But, it has an expiration date, and often, once you realize its importance you have aged out of the free portion of your education. You need to recognize the importance now!

The next PTA meeting is April 17th in the school library. Please enter through the front doors.

The school carnival is scheduled for evening of May 17th. Volunteers will be needed to assist at game stations and serve food. Please contact Sue Cunningham if you are available to help – [email protected] or 716-483-4411 ext. 5060.

The PTA has recently purchased a display case that will be placed in the cafeteria. This is a central location where school items can be placed and all grade levels will be able to view them.

T-Shirts recently went on sale to all students and families. If you didn’t order one, we have extras that will be put on sale at a later date.

HEALTH OFFICE NEWSAll students entering 6th grade in the 2019-2020 school year must have documentation of Tdap and 2 varicella vaccinations. Parent recall of Varicella (Chicken Pox) is not sufficient and cannot be accepted as proof of immunity.

All students entering 7th grade in the 2019-2020 school must have documentation of the meningitis vaccine.

If your child has not had these vaccinations, please call their pediatrician or the Chautauqua County health department over the summer and have them done.

Also, students entering grades 5 and 7 will need to have documentation of a physical exam (Well child visit) within the last year.
