For those who want to become Inclusive Early Childhood, Elementary, Special Education, Middle or Secondary Education teachers, the CoE offers pre-professional programs that lead to teaching licensure and a Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) degree. The CoE offers a TESOL teacher licensure program that can be completed as an undergraduate or combined with another teaching program for those who want to work with speakers of other languages. For individuals who want to work with students with autism or gifted students, the CoE offers special certificate and endorsement programs. If you’re looking to enhance your career by gaining additional professional skills, the CoE offers programs for non-teaching Exceptional Education, Educational Media, and Human Resource Development.

Secondary History and Social Science (Social Studies)

Do you want to become a History and Social Science (Social Studies) teacher? The Department of

Middle, Secondary, and Mathematics Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right program for you:

Secondary Education! You will major in either History or Political Science, minor in Interdisciplinary Social

Science, and apply for the undergraduate pre-professional program in

K-12 Foreign Language

Do you want to become a Foreign Language teacher? The Department of Middle, Secondary, and

Mathematics Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right program for you:

Secondary Education! You will major in either French, German, or Spanish and apply for

the undergraduate pre-professional program in Secondary Education. Your pre-

professional program will begin as a freshman or sophomore when you take a few select

prerequisite classes. Throughout your undergraduate career, you will align some of your

foreign language major classes with your Secondary Education program requirements to

make sure you have a thorough understanding of your content for when you teach it. If you want to teach more

than one foreign language, you will also take additional courses in the second language during undergraduate years.

Finally, you will complete a 5th year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate program, which is required for

licensure. Upon successful completion of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, you will have the

knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to be an exceptional Foreign Language teacher for grades K-12 in

Virginia’s public schools.

Middle Education

Are you interested in becoming a middle school teacher? The Department of Middle, Secondary, and Mathematics Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right program for you: Middle Education! To become a middle school teacher, you must be endorsed to teach two of the four core subject areas (Mathematics, History/Social Science, Science, or English/Language Arts). In order to meet this requirement, you will major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IDLS), a major designed to help you complete coursework in your two desired content areas. You will also need to apply for the undergraduate pre-professional program in Middle Education. Your pre-professional program will begin as a freshman or sophomore when you take a few select prerequisite classes and begin to align your General Education requirements with those of your IDLS major. One class can fulfill both requirements! Also, throughout your undergraduate career, you will align your IDLS major classes with your Middle Education program requirements to make sure you have a thorough

understanding of your content areas before you teach them. Finally, you will complete a 5th year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate program, which is required for licensure in Middle Education. Early, Elementary, and Reading Education

Inclusive Early Childhood Education

Do you want to become an early childhood teacher (birth-3rd grade) or an early childhood exceptional education teacher? The Department of Early, Elementary, and Reading Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right program for you: Inclusive Early Childhood Education! To become an early childhood teacher, you must not only possess knowledge of the four core subject areas (Mathematics, History/ Social Science, Natural Sciences, and English/Language Arts), but you must also choose a concentration in either Math, Science, and Technology or Humanities and Social Sciences. In order to meet these requirements, you will major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies (IDLS), a major designed to help you learn foundational knowledge and focus on your desired concentration at the same time. In addition, you will need to apply for the undergraduate pre-professional program in Inclusive Early Childhood Education. Your pre-professional program will begin as a freshman or sophomore when you take a few select prerequisite classes. During your junior and senior years you will complete coursework designed to help you understand the role of the inclusive educator, child development, assessment, developmentally appropriate curriculum, classroom management, and teaching strategies. You will also have a chance to practice what you learn in a variety of field placements. Finally, you will complete a 5th year Master of Arts in Teaching (MAT) graduate program, which includes more coursework, fieldwork, and student teaching to complete licensure with endorsement in Early Childhood Special Education and PreK-3. Upon successful completion of both the undergraduate and graduate programs, you will have the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to be an extraordinary Early Childhood teacher for children ages birth through grades PreK-3 in Virginia’s public schools. Do you want to become a Special Education teacher? The Department of Exceptional Education within

JMU’s College of Education has the right program for you: K-12 Special Education! To become a Special

Education teacher, you must major in Interdisciplinary Liberal Studies

(IDLS) or another liberal arts discipline. In addition, you will need to

apply for the undergraduate pre-professional program in K-12 Special

Education. Your pre-professional program will begin as a freshman or

Exceptional Education

Gifted Education Endorsement

Are you interested in gifted education?    The Department of Exceptional Education within JMU’s College of

Education has the right endorsement program for you: K-12 Gifted

Education! To be endorsed in Gifted Education, you must already

be accepted into a pre-professional undergraduate teacher licensure

program. Participants of the endorsement program will complete a

four-course sequence and both practicum and student teaching

experiences in K-12 Gifted Education. You can take your courses

at any time; however, they will always be billed as graduate tuition.

Upon successful completion of your entire pre-professional and

endorsement programs, you will have the knowledge, skills, and

experiences necessary to be an exemplary teacher for both regular

and gifted education students in Virginia’s public schools.

Autism Certificate

Would you like to teach students with a disability on the autism spectrum?    The Department of

Exceptional Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right certificate program for you: Autism

Spectrum Studies! The undergraduate certificate program is

best suited for teachers and other individuals who will not have

direct responsibility for students with autism, but who would

like to increase their understanding of, and abilities to,

effectively work with students with autism. To earn your

certificate in Autism Spectrum Studies, you can complete the

three-course sequence of classes in as little as two semesters.

Upon successful completion of your certificate program, you

will have increased your knowledge of the unique programming

and life planning, communication, behavioral, developmental,

and social needs of individuals with autism.

Exceptional Education Non-teaching Minor

Are you interested in learning about students with exceptionalities? The Department of Exceptional

Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right minor program for

you: Non-teaching Exceptional Education! The Exceptional Education Non-

teaching minor is ideal for students who are pursuing professions in

Communication Sciences and Disorders, Psychology, Health Sciences, and

Nursing, to name a few. The Exceptional Education Non-teaching minor will

enhance your main program of study by providing you with necessary

instruction on the varying needs of individuals with disabilities and how to meet

those needs as a professional. You may begin the 18-credit minor after speaking

with an advisor and completing a prerequisite class. You must declare the minor before the end of the first

semester of your junior year. Upon successful completion of your minor program, you will have increased your

knowledge of the unique programming and life planning, communication, behavioral, developmental, and social

needs of individuals with exceptional learning needs.

Learning, Technology, and Leadership Education

PK-12 TESOL Licensure

Would you like to teach English to speakers of other languages? The Department of Learning,

Technology, and Leadership Education within JMU’s College of Education has the

right minor program for you: Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages

(TESOL)! To minor and earn licensure in TESOL, you must already be accepted

into an Early, Elementary, Middle, Secondary or Special Education pre-professional

undergraduate program. If you want to become a teacher, the PK-12 TESOL

endorsement will enhance your initial licensure area by providing you with

additional skills in intercultural competence. You will also be licensed in two areas

instead of one. Participants in the TESOL minor program will complete an eight-

course sequence and three TESOL field experiences. Upon successful completion of

the TESOL minor, you will have the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to be an exemplary educator of

speakers of other languages. This program is undergoing revisions and soon will be available as a “stand-alone”

Learning, Technology, and Leadership Education

Educational Media Minor

Would you like to design materials for learners of all ages using the latest technologies and

related processes? The Department of Learning, Technology, and

Leadership Education within JMU’s College of Education has the right minor

program for you: Educational Media! The Educational Media minor is ideal

for students who want to work in educational technology departments found

in secondary and post-secondary schools, businesses, government, industry

and non-profit organizations. Graduates may also pursue careers as

independent consultants. The Education Media minor will enhance your

main program of study by providing you with an in-depth understanding of

learning processes, instructional technology, and instructional design.

Participants in the Educational Media minor program will complete 18 credit hours. Upon successful completion of

the Educational Media minor, you will have the knowledge, skills, and experiences necessary to be an exemplary

educator in the workplace.

Learning, Technology and Leadership Education

Human Resource Development

Do you want to design and implement professional development materials and programs for adult learners? The Learning, Technology and Leadership Education department in the College of Education

has the right minor for you: Human Resource Development. The HRD minor is

an 18-credit hour program that is technically oriented, and places particular

emphasis on the skills necessary to develop and implement professional

development materials and programs. This program complements most

undergraduate majors - it was designed to provide students from a wide variety of

content disciplines the competencies needed to become a trainer, have enhanced

career ladder opportunities, interpret and use research, develop conceptual,

interpersonal, and technical leadership skills, and work with diverse populations.

The HRD minor prepares students for job-specific skills involving instructional delivery, the design of curricular

programs and materials, the application of cognitive skills in problem-solving and critical thinking, and the

development of program administration skills.
