The CompaNy: VARIS Toys was founded in 1988 by 3 family members and has been producing a variety of wood products, such as finished wood panels, furniture parts and complete solid wood furniture pieces, mostly for export to Denmark, Germany and Finland. The former name of VARIS Toys LTD was Saime, which has the meaning of family in the Latvian language.after 10 years of producing furniture, seeing large amounts of wood material be produced and exported on demand, and accruing high levels of excess waste in the production process, the decision was made to save the wood materials by making smaller products where wood production leftovers are kept to a minimum . During the year 2000 the head of the creative department designed and invented the patented construction set VaRIS. The family dream came true – this unique product has been created with our own design and under a self developed brand – VaRIS – which in Latvian language has the strong meaning of a smart, brave and capable boy. The other meaning of the word VARIS is – being able, variation, etc. It has now been 10 years of production and export of wooden toys. The main target markets are Germany, Italy, Slovenia, Japan, Norway, Finland, United Kingdom, Czech Republic and others. There are plans to penetrate the USa and Canada markets in the near future. In the last 10 years besides the construction set VaRIS, other products such as VaRIS Town Builder 107, VaRIS architect, and VaRIS marble Run have entered the market successfully.Basic principles of VARIS Toys:

• Quality in every step – starting from the idea through the production process to the readymade toy in the hands of a child;• an individual approach and long-term cooperation with each partner and client;• accuracy and responsibility for each decision;• The main goals of VaRIS Toys are to keep producing environmentally friendly, educational, simple designed wooden toys.

ReSpoNSIBILITy:The materials and processes involved in manufacturing VaRIS wooden toys require a great responsibility for nature, for people and society in general. Nature and people are very important for us therefore VaRIS is active in both contributions to environmental rehabilitation and to the social sphere.VARIS Toys history began as far back as 1988 in the Valmiera district of Latvia with the purchase of a parcel of land. The VaRIS factory was built on the site of a former landfill. This required extensive effort to rehabilitate this land and return it to a pleasant environment. In considering energy efficiencies a facility for heating and ventilation was built which recycles the exhaust air and after filtering returns this warm air back into the factory. In addition all manufacturing waste is used for building heating and drying of raw materials. Skilled craftsmanship is important in the production of VARIS Toys. Taking into account that contemporary manufacturing adds growing demand on energy resources, energy efficiency is important criteria in determining our choice of equipment. VARIS Toys partners with a local social house and provides opportunities for employment for those with developmental disabilities. Their work is a little slower but with great precision. also VaRIS is involved in other socially aware projects including providing play resources for children of low-income families and in several children’s hospitals contributing to the children’s recovery process. We are glad when we can be of help to someone.

• In addition to complying with european safety standards VaRIS Toys has established a system of quality controls to inspect components at each stage of production.

Northern Birch (Sicista betulina) used in Varis Toys was also traditionally used to create attractive items of lasting value. Wood is a living material that is both tough and gentle. We use wood from suppliers who guarantee the responsible management of forests. Varis Toys selects only the highest quality hardwood to produce our toys.Wood as a natural material is especially suitable for children. a nice aroma as well as retaining warmth makes playing even more pleasant.

DEUTSCHER DESIGNPREIS HOLZSPIELZEUG 2004 (German Design award Wooden Toys). In 2004 Varis received an award for the Constructor set. Criteria to determine award winners are design, innovation, motivation to play, safety and impact on environment.

VaRIS received the Spiel Gut (Good Toy) recommendation in Germany. Since 1954, educationalists, psychologists, doctors, technicians, experts in design, chemistry, electronics and parents – scientific and practical people – have been examining and assessing toys.They work on an honorary basis and are independent of the toy industry and retailers.Their spiel gut recommendation signifies that this toy has been tested with children and examined by experts with a positive result.Their criteria: play value, material, workmanship, construction, durability, safety, design, size, quantity, quality of the instructions for playing or making, suitability for the appropriate age group.

QUALITy

VARIS Marble Run has won a second place award in competition Export and Innovation Award 2010 in the category Industrial Design. This competition was organized by ministry of economics of Latvia. The criteria for determining the winner – development phases of the design, design solution and its benefits, product uniqueness, investment amount and the available markets.

VARIS Toys won first place award in the Export and Innovation Competition Award 2004 organized by ministry of economics of the Republic of Latvia in the category for most innovative product/service export solution. Criteria for award: promotion of export of innovation, turnover of export, existing markets and development of new markets and effectiveness of work.VaRIS Toys won second place award in the “Export and Innovation Competition Award 2008” organized by ministry of economics of the Republic of Latvia in the category for most capable export merchant. Criteria: turnover, new export market development, existing markets, and export promotion activities.

VARIS Constructor sets are toys based on the patented Lock-System fixing technique that allows tight connections of separate pieces. Constructor Sets consist of different lengths of wooden components. Children can follow their imaginations to create a variety of things like log houses, cars, robots, airplanes or many other things from their mind. VaRIS constructor design is based on traditional log building techniques and enables your child to understand the art of creating interesting objects of different size and shapes.

VARIS Marble Run is a wooden construction game that teaches and helps children to imagine and design creations that enable the ball to roll to the ground. Wooden components are made with grooves and holes to allow balls to roll along the surface and also through holes and around corners. These parts can be arranged in many different combinations and allow three balls to race downhill at the same time.

The VARIS Marble Run contains wooden parts of different length and height making the game more dynamic and faster ball race to the bottom. This game has an incredible number of possible variations: from simple straight line to complex multi tiered wooden block combinations.

This toy helps stimulate logic and spatial thinking in children. Combining elements of the game, balls and gravity, through experimentation three dimensional perceptions are improved. according to test results this toy can keep a child’s attention for up to 1 hour and 20 minutes.

Wooden toy Architect is a wooden block system from birch that stimulates spatial and structural thinking. Different sized parts develop visual and kinetic perception. The wooden blocks allow the child to feel as an architect constructing a simple church as well as a palace with towers. VARIS Town Builder is a wooden toy construction game for little city builders. This toy helps develop their creativity, structural and dimensional accuracy. The game includes 107 different sized wooden blocks that allow little architects to create imaginary cities and building with their own hands.
