February 5, 1796
A group of major patriotic Czech
aristocrats and several middle-class
intellectuals from the Enlightenment
movement decided to “elevate the
decadent taste of the local public”, as they
put it. Their organization called the
Society of the Patriotic Friends of Arts
established two important institutions,
which Prague had lacked: the Academy of
Fine Arts and the Picture Gallery of the
Society of the Patriotic Friends of Arts,
which was opened for the public. The
Picture Gallery became a predecessor of
today’s National Gallery in Prague. To
commemorate the 220th anniversary of its
establishment, several events will take
place in 2016.
1902
The Picture Gallery was accompanied by
another significant institution, the
Modern Gallery of the Kingdom of
Bohemia, a private foundation of Emperor
Franz Joseph I. The Modern Gallery
began to build its core collection of 20th-
century art.
1918
The Picture Gallery of the Society of the
Patriotic Friends of Arts became a central
art collection of the new Czechoslovak
state. In 1919, Vincenc Kramář was
appointed the Gallery's director and soon
transformed it into a relatively modern
and professionally managed gallery.
1942
During the difficult times of World War
II, the Modern Gallery was abolished and
its collections were transferred to the
National (officially, Czech-Moravian
Land) Gallery.
1949
The establishment of the National
Gallery was enacted.

November 16, 1951
The Collection of Oriental Art (today’s
Collection of Asian and African Art) of the
National Gallery in Prague was
established by the Czechoslovak Ministry
of Culture.
The core and development of the Oriental
Art collection
Acquisitions based on the collecting
activities of the rulers and aristocrats
(17th–18th centuries)
Acquisitions based on the activities of
Czech travellers and collectors (Meiji and
Taisho eras). The three following
personalities were major travellers and
collectors:
Josef (Joe) Hloucha (1881–1957)
He visited Japan in 1906 and 1926. His
collection of some 800 woodblock print
albums was donated to the National
Gallery in Prague in 1957.
Satsuma Jirohachi (1901–1976)
In 1936, his collection was presented at
an exhibition in Prague, and in 1937, 19
outstanding artworks (oil paintings,
paintings, folding screens) were donated
to the Czechoslovak state.
Lubor Hájek (1921–2000)
He ran the Collection of Oriental Art
since 1951; especially the collection of
Chinese art was enriched during his
tenure.

The collection consists of some 14,000
artefacts. More than 7,000 items are of
Japanese origin, the Japanese art
collection making some 52 percent of the
Collection of Oriental Art.
Seats of the Collection of Oriental Art
Between 1964 and 1969, the collection
was housed in Benešov nad Ploučnicí
Chateau. Unfortunately, the chateau was
partly destroyed by a fire in 1969. A part
of the Collection of Oriental Art was lost
and no permanent exhibition site existed
until 29 years later, 1998.
In 1998–2009, the collection was based in
Zbraslav Chateau.
Since 2010, the collection has been housed
in the Kinský Palace. The permanent
exhibition can be found on its first floor.
Short-time exhibitions of Oriental art
Short-time exhibitions are held for no
longer than three months. They are held
in various exhibition halls of the National
Gallery in Prague.
Depositories
The current collections of Asian and
African art are deposited in two
depositories:
1) depository of 2D artefacts in the
Kinský Palace
2) depository of 3D artefacts in the
Veletržní Palace
