Looks like the summer is finally here! On behalf of EC and BOT, we wish you all a very happy and enjoyable summer. We hope everyone had a chance to look at the new study class partitions and the stage curtains. We have already started to see the benefits of having them in the recent study classes and the annual Student’s Day function. The students are now able to study in a very conducive environment and all our stage functions now have a professional touch to it. The total cost of this project is approximately $95,000. Sincere thanks to all the members who have contributed to support this major project. We are still a little short and would like to appeal to everyone to donate generously towards this project. Charitable Gift of Life Insurance: Life Insurance can be a convenient way to make a substantial gift to JSGD for a relatively modest annual cost. While there are many different types of life insurance, the principle of giving remains the same - a relatively small gift in the present will ultimately provide a much larger gift in the future. Plus your donations could be tax deductible. During Mahavir Janma Kalyanak, we did a brief presentation on this topic. We are glad to see a very positive response to this effort. If you are interested in this program or need more details, please contact any EC or BOT member. If you are a society member in good standing for atleast 3 years and are a Life Insurance agent, please send us your name and contact information so that we can provide it to the interested members. Change in timings: We strongly believe that “Ratri Bhojan” should not happen at the temple. Since the sun sets early during winter, Swamivatsalya dinners that generally happen on Saturdays during Swapna Darshan and Diwali celebrations are being moved to lunches on Sundays. This means that the entire program schedule that would generally happen on Saturday afternoons would now happen on Sunday mornings. Information on more detailed schedule will be provided as we get closer to those programs. Call for your help: We need your help! We have been starting all programs dot on time irrespective of the attendance. The reason for that is that we also want to finish the programs on time. During the last Mahavir Janma Kalyanak program, it was very disheartening to see JOY group, our future, perform the Snatra Puja in front of a very thin crowd. We also had to delay the general body presentation because the presentation was to share the information with the entire society and if the society is not present, then who do we share the information with? This resulted in delay of Swamivatsalya dinner. Here is where we need the help from the entire society. We need your full support to help us start the functions on time. Just your presence from the very start would be a huge help. Ayambil Oli was celebrated from April 12 th thru 20 th followed by Parna on 21 st . About 40 people performed entire Oli. Mahavir Janma Kalyanak program was celebrated on April 26th with a Snatra Puja performed by the JOY group followed by general body meeting and a Swamivatsalya dinner. It was attended by over 500 people. The Swamivatsalya was a grand success due to the efforts and coordination of Bharti Doshi and her wonderful team which consisted of Kalpana Choksi, Chandra Kothari, Usha Khariwal, Niru Maru, Mina Shah, Jaya Shah, Vibha Shah, Manini Sanghvi, Smita Sheth, Mina Parikh, & Devyani Shah. We would like to take this opportunity to thank the JOY advisors & the entire team, Bhartiben Doshi & her entire team and also everyone who assisted in setting up the hall for dinner and helping clean up after the dinner.
Pittsburgh Sangh visited our temple on May 3rd and 4th. On 3rd, they had dinner with us followed by Bhavna. Our sincere thanks to Gayatri R Munot and her team of volunteers which consisted of Niral P Shah, Sonal N Shah, Pratiksha H Shah, Mona A Bora, & Rachna D Parakh for organizing the dinner that evening. We also want to thank Surbhi P Shah for making mohanthal and Purvi S Shah, Reepal R Shah, Shaila Shah, Bharti M Shah, & Bhavna J Mehta for making rotlis for the Sangh. Next day morning, the Sangh had breakfast, did Puja and left for Lansing before going back to Pittsburgh. We would like to thank Pratima P Shah along with Purvi S Shah, Shaila Shah, for coordinating breakfast for the Sangh.
Then on May 4th, we had, for the first time ever, one of its kind Fund Raising event - Shaam-E-Karaoke entertainment program. Stars of the community presented variety of songs and it was a huge success. After all the expenses, the society raised about $1800. We would like to thank all the participants, volunteers and Fund Raising Team for this excellent program. Special thanks to Kundanben Sata for coordinating this event.
The most awaited Kid’s program - Student’s Annual Day Function – was a huge success on May 18th. This program was very well attended and “WOW” was what everyone had to say about this program. Everyone had nothing but praise for our youngsters and their teachers. Hats off to Mahendrabhai (Guruji), Vinaybhai, study class teachers, students, MCs, JOY and other volunteers for all the efforts and contribution to make this program a huge success like never seen before.
Your attendance and active participation in these upcoming programs during the months of June & July will be greatly appreciated:
10th Anniversary Program (June 13 thru 22) : 10 Years of our temple deserves a 10 day celebration. It is one of the most exciting times of the year for the temple and we are happy to have Gurudev Shree Chitrabhanuji with us from June 13 through June 16. He is planning to deliver the messages on certain important topics like “Dharma No Marma”, “Sadhana, Aradhana & Viradhana”, “Where will we go from here? And who is for me?”. Also Narendrabhai Nandu and his group will be helping to celebrate the Grand Anniversary function. The entire schedule of this function is available in this Jain Vani and also on our website at http://www.jain-temple.org/schedule.shtml. Please mark your calendar and let us together make this function a huge success. There are still a few open spots for fixed gheebolis. Please check the enclosed list and signup by filling the form on the board in the temple. We also need volunteers during this program. Please contact any EC or BOT member if you can volunteer some of your time during this function.
Due to 10 days of Anniversary function, we had to change the date for the Annual Father’s Day picnic. JSGD Father's Day Picnic - 2008 is being held in Shelter D in the Possum Hollow area of the Kensington Metro Park on Sunday June 29, 2008. Complete details are provided in this issue of Jain Vani.
On July 19th, Jain Samaj of Cleveland is visiting Detroit. Please mark your calendar so that all of us can give them a warm welcome.

Michigan Asian Indian Family Services (MAI Family Services)
Michigan Asian Indian Family Services was established in 1986 as a support system for South Asians living in MI. We are a Free, Volunteer run, non-profit organization. Our goal is to provide immediate assistance & help to individuals & families experiencing any personal, family related, medical or mental health problems. We meet this goal by having our professionally trained caseworkers provide confidential counseling, guidance & appropriate referrals to calls received on our helpline. We work very closely with mainstream organizations as well as other sister organizations in providing assistance to our clients. Our work also involves building awareness of problems such as domestic violence, and other issues affecting our community right now. We achieve this by conducting public forums, various seminars and workshops. We all have our ups and downs in life. Sometimes, it takes a professional to sort through these challenges. But unfortunately, in our community there is a great stigma to seeking help. We at MAI Family Services believe that it is okay to ask for help. Our goal is to increase awareness and help develop strategies to strengthen family life and independence; and improve social and economic well being. All of these services are provided while maintaining utmost confidentiality. Please check out our web page: www.maifs.org for updates on our efforts & for information on upcoming events. Partition, Stage Curtain and Projection Screen Pled ge Drive in progress
Jai Jinendra to readers. Many of you attended the Annual Day Program staged by Study Class Students on May 18th at our temple. For those who could not attend it – ‘we missed you’. It was well attended by 400 members (students and adults). It was quite a sight to see the students performing on stage that is well equipped with beautiful & colorful curtains, new microphones and improved lighting etc. Total 11 group items were presented by 140 students. The attendees also had an opportunity to see how the partitions look in place forming separated class rooms. Everyone had good appreciative comments for the efforts of committee members. We have an ongoing pledge drive to make this project a self supportive. We initiated the drive few weeks back (during Mahavir Janma Kalyanak Day Celebration). So far, we have a good success but we still need more support from members to reach our goals. Temporary plaques (showing Bronze, Silver & Gold plates) have been posted on pillars and stage area walls indicating how the pledges will be recognized (from $1,500 to $5,000 and up). By this short note we appeal the members to visit the social hall of our temple (if not done so) and encourage young adult to support this drive. Many of them have been thru class system and now well settled in their lives. Details about Pledge Drive are posted on study class bulletin board (also published in last Jain Vani). If any question, please contact Mahendra J. Shah (Tel; 734-453-2968) or Vinay C. Shah (Tel: 248-641-5975).

Annual Day Program – On Sunday, May 18th we celebrated 25th Annual Day Program. With the blessings of SASHAN DEV and our elders, the program was very successful. Eleven groups presented an item of what they learned in the class. This year’s theme was “Let Us Motivate Each Other”. The highlights of the program are as follows: • Everyone noticed – the curtains did the magic – we are so grateful to EC and BOT members for their support. • The humors by MC team – wonderful – don’t have enough words for them - they exceeded our expectations by far. • The JOY team - kept the audience well behaved - no ins and outs during the performance - great. • No-one was rushing to the front of stage before every item to take photos and videos • The theme was "Let's Motivate Each Other" and really it also did the magic. People really enjoyed the variety - dances, skits,
game, and specially Presidential Cabinet and JNN (Jain National News) - These items gave all some new way of thinking. • At least half a dozen students came and said they want to be MC next year - Is this motivation or what? • The food committee did a great job - JOB WELL DONE - the food was all gone (say 98%) that was great. • We must have at least 400 people in the audience. • The sound system, lighting, and curtains also performed well - why - we had great people taking care. • All the groups did follow the time limit and that made the program more successful and within our time. Jai Jinendra! There are many JOY events going on this summer: charity activities, social activities, and temple activities! Like the garba in mid-July, which we are planning for not just the Jain community, but the whole Gujarati Samaj! It will be a great opportunity to meet other Gujarati people, not just from our temple, but from the whole Detroit area! Keep looking out for more upcoming information on it!
JOY is now holding a Can Food Drive for the Salvation Army! It will be going on until the end of summer. The Study Class classes will be competing against each other and the class with that donated the most cans will win a special prize! So remember to bring in plenty of cans to the next study classes for this great cause! If you have any questions, contact any JOY board member.
We are planning for a Temple Clean-Up this summer! There are little things like putting in flowers, raking leaves, and just doing general cleaning, but there are some bigger jobs that need to be done as well. There will be more information on it soon, but keep looking out for it! We have a beautiful temple, but we all need to help keep it that way!

After a very successful Fund Raising Dinner on March 22, Fund Raising Committee conducted another successful event – Karaoke Program on May 4. The program was extremely well received by an audience of about 170. In addition to the wonderful performance, the audience very much appreciated tasty tea and snacks during the intermission.
There were 3 key objectives for this event: - Raise moderate fund for the Temple - Give a platform to the community members to show their talent - Have a cultural event to draw more Jains and Non Jains to the Temple This event generated a surplus of about $ 1,800.00 for the Temple. Four of the performers are our own members – Peenal Shah, Reepal Shah, Shaila Shah and Ajit Mehta, and they earned thundering ovation from the audience. Many Non Jain Audience visited Temple for the first time and they were truly impressed by the serenity of our Temple. A heartwarming question from the audience – when are you organizing the next event? – was a true satisfaction for the organizers, who put in a tremendous effort for this event.
