Our center continues to be busy. It is very hard to find a weekend when one or other activities is not taking place as we continue to cater the diverse needs of our community. In coming months, you will see many more new and innovative programs. However, all this has been possible because of help from all the volunteers and contributors like you. Here is a quick summary of the events since we published last Jain Vani. Fundraising Dinner: Our 22 nd annual Fundraising Dinner program held at Suburban Collection Showplace on March 21 st , 2015 was a grand success. We had more than 500 adults and 60 youth members who attended the event; this was highest so far for a Fund- -raising event. The food and handmade decorations were superb and so was the flute played by entertainment group. Kids had a blast in the child care area. We whole- heartedly thank all the guests, FRD Team Lead Shailesh and Jyoti Jain, fundraising core committee members, volunteers and others for organizing and managing this program well. We are very happy to announce that we raised a sum of $142,229 with an estimated expense of $ 38,000 resulting in estimated net income of $ 104,000. We would like to thank all those who pledged generously and also those who provided the advertisement in the brochure. The list of pledges and brochure advertisements are included in this Jain Vani. Financial Software: We are in the process of switching the accounting software. New commercial QuickBooks Software will allow us to streamline financial operations with numerous benefits. Jignesh Madhani and Prakash Shah are leading the task with current EC and volunteers. Upgrade will be completed in coming month and we appreciate your patience and cooperation during the transition. Temple Insurance: Our cost of temple insurance policy was rising significantly. We evaluated, compared and changed our temple insurance policy to assure that we have the right coverage with a reduced premium. This effort will save an estimated 35% over a year. The incredibly strict diet of a Jain monk Monks and nuns who strictly adhere to Jainism have to abide by a complex set of dietary rules
"People may think our life is difficult but for me our way of life is much easier to live," says Samani Pratibha
Pragya. She is a practising Jain "monk". In the age of the smartphones, Samani moves through life with only two
possessions - a pair of simple white robes and three handmade wooden bowls which she collects food in.
Jain monks renounce all material possessions and rely for
food and shelter on the Jain community. It's more common
to see such monks and nuns in India where the Jain religion
was founded and Samani was born, but she lives her life of
abstinence surrounded by the technological comforts of 21st
Century London. A decade ago Samani was given special
dispensation from higher priests to travel to London to
complete a PhD at the School of Oriental and African Studies
and she still studies and lectures at the university.
"Of course the environment is different here but if you are
committed and devoted then living life as a Jain monk can be
achieved anywhere you go," says Samani. "In London there are 10,000 Jain families and I rely on them for food
and accommodation and in return it is my job as a Jain monk to give them spiritual upliftment. It's a type of
symbiotic relationship."
The Jain religion is believed to be one of the most ancient religions in the world and is often associated with
Hinduism or seen as a branch of Hinduism. However, Jainism is very much a religion in its own right and its
followers have to keep a strict code of conduct especially when it comes to diet.
Jains are strict vegetarians but also do not eat root vegetables and some types of fruits. Some Jains are also vegans
and exclude various types of green vegetables during periods of the month.
Jain website atmadharma.com, explain: "We as Jains believe in reincarnation and we believe that all living things
contain a soul. We therefore aim to cause as little harm as possible to these living things so restrict what we eat
accordingly."
It is this principle of nonviolence to living things, or ahimsa as the Jains call it, which dictates Samani's life of
abstinence. She doesn't know in advance what she will eat on any given day, and she is also obliged to eat every
last bit of the food given to her, rather than throwing any away.
"If you throw it away like that, if you put it in the dustbin, it's going to accumulate microorganisms and they are
going to die," says Bharti Shah, who prepared breakfast for Samani. "Albeit inadvertently, I caused the harm. So
I have to minimise the harm."
Samani, who also fasts completely from sunset to sunrise, including going without water, is happy with her lot.
"To appreciate good music in life you need to understand what silence is too," she says. "In the same way I enjoy
life but I don't have to over-indulge. While everyone worries about what they are going to wear and what they are
going to earn, my life is simple. I have my small amount of possessions and with that I'm always happy."

Upcoming Study Class Dates for 2015 May 3rd May 17th June 7th June 14th
Jai Jinendra, JOY hopes that everyone has had a splendid break! In the beginning of March, JOY had an event where JOY alumni who were in college or working, came in and gave us several tips on how to be successful in high school and college. They discussed a proper balance of AP/ IB classes, how to prepare yourself for the SAT/ACT, how to write college admission essays, and how to apply for scholarships. Many JOY members attended this from grades varying from 7th grade to 12th grade. A special thanks to Alisha Vora, Kajal Ravani, Anshul Mehta, Vishal Mehta, Umang Lathia, Harsha Nahata, Sonali Vakharia, Rishi Zaveri, and Ritika Jain for helping out with this. They gave us all a lot of information, and it helped guide a lot of teens. Also, at the annual Fundraising dinner JOY held its first flash mob! Since the theme was "Kaal, Aaj, Aur Kaal, the JOY flash mob included popular Hindi songs of the past, present, and future. All the JOY members had a ton of fun putting it together and it was quite the bonding experience. We hope everyone enjoyed watching it. Along with that, JOY was able to help with registration at the Fundraising Dinner. Overall, with the cooperation of JOY and EC Board, we were able to make the Fundraising Dinner yet another success. After the Fundraising Dinner the next major event was the Mahavir Jayanti celebration. JOY was able to help out with the set up of the event. Many JOY members were also able to participate in the Snatra Pooja. There was Bhavna at the temple as well and yet another excellent lunch was served. Mahavir Jayanti was, again, a huge success, and we are glad that the whole community was able to come together to celebrate this festive event.
