Jail chockers at Easter Sally Brooks See Wicking: Page 6 ALICE Springs jail is once again full, with the overflow of prisoners being accommo- dated at the police watch house. NT Department of Correc- tional Services David Harris yesterday confirmed 15 in- mates were being held in the police station, under the guard of two prison officers. Mr Harris said the jail had reached its capacity of 650 prisoners. ‘‘As numbers fluctuate from day to day and pris- oners are released or make bail, prisoners will be taken from the watch house back to the prison,’’ he said. The news comes after the Centralian Advocate re- vealed the cap on the num- ber of inmates at Alice Springs prison was this year increased by 50. In July last year, authorit- ies confirmed the prison cap- acity was 600. But authorities have now said current oper- ational capacity is 650. Alice Springs Correctional Centre also reached capacity last year in the week before the Easter long weekend. NT Prison Officers Associ- ation president Phil Tilbrook told the Centralian Advocate at the time that more than maximum number of pris- oners were being held at the jail. In April 2012 Mr Tilbrook said the overflow from the prison had been accommo- dated at the watch house for two weeks. Sign-up for workshop AN exciting week of workshop programs to inspire young people to become involved in the arts starts next week. From Page to Stage is a series of one-day workshops for ages eight to 17 years, rang- ing from script writing, circus skills to screen printing. Founder of Red Dust Theatre Craig Mathewson does the workshop on screen writing, and NIDA graduate Kallum Wil- kinson will guide an act- ing skills workshop. Workshops run from April 8-12 at the Araluen Arts Centre. Thieves on camera FOUR youths have been arrested after stealing a digital cam- era from an East Side school and taking photos of themselves. Detective Senior Ser- geant Peter Malley said the youths allegedly un- lawfully entered the premises about 4am on Sunday and stole a camera, food and drink. Police officers found the offenders on school grounds. After review- ing the contents of the camera, police were able to identify those involved.
