A royal edifice steeped in History The Jai Mahal Palace, like any other magnificent edifice, is steeped in history. Formerly known as the Natani-ka-Bagh , the garden house of an 18th century Rajput chieftain Hargovind Natani forms the nucleus of the present day hotel, thereby tracing its origins back to 1745. Natani constructed a garden house complete with a small palace, a char-bagh (cruciform) style Mughal garden with water courses, flowering trees, fountains and pavilions on the south- western outskirt of the city. In 1750 when Madho Singh occupied the throne of Jaipur, the days of Natani’s glory and honor came to an end. The sprawling Natani-ka-Bagh was reverted to the state as per state policy and not a soul stirred within its plush environs for decades.

Dr. Thomas Holbein Hendley After a long span of 124 years, Natani-ka-bagh had stirrings of life again. The Palace acquired new importance when the young British Doctor, Thomas Holbein Hendley, came to reside here in the summer of 1874 as the officiating medical Charge of Jaipur Political Agency. He spent the next 22 year of his eventful life in this beautiful Palace which became the hub of activity of the most creative people who came to work in Jaipur. He also took upon himself the task of planning, and acquiring the collection of Jaipur’s first museum, the Government Central Museum opened on August 21st, 1881

Jaipur derives its name from its illustrious ruler Maharaja Jai Singh. The city was undoubtedly one of the best planned in India. The city’s architect, Vidyadhar ensured that he first approved all building plans before being cleared for construction; one of the reason's why the old city has developed so harmoniously.
