My design philosophy, passion and story.

Generalist with passion

I am interested in both the product and transportation design, and I was ab le to exh ib i t my own concept car artwork by partic ipat ing in COEX international design exhibit ion as the school representative . I spent many sleepless nights preparing for the exhibition, but they were all worth it because exchanging skills and information with students f rom other school was va luable . Dur ing my second yea r, I h ad a chance to exper i ence p rac t i c a l business by participating in external hard dr ive des ign project held by Samsung. While I was learning practical business in Suwon (Samsung external hard drive establish-ment in Suwon) , pract ical bus iness des igner who was working there rated me and my motivated skills well and recommended me to Samsung CNB Design research facility (Samsung headquarters). At the facility, I was able to get a chance to support robot designing process. I became more interested in des ign through va luab le experience at Samsung. I realized that designer must know more than just the des ign when i t comes to conf l i c ts between developer and designer, and also learned interest-ing commercialization process of an idea, and the interior of products.

I once did a presentation to Hyundai Motors executives, and I realized that my ability to communicate my thoughts to others was lacking. Therefore, I am serving as the head of transportation division of Hanyang University's I .D.M academic society, in order share data with seniors andjuniors, and to improve my expression and communication sk i l l s . A l so, s t a r t i n g f rom Januar y of l as t year, I have

Page 6: Jaewanworks.com

participated in winter, summer and midterm projects in SKY Designers Community. By participating, I was able to study expert knowledge and pract ica l bus iness design process. I also met lots of unique people and exchanged ideas. I believe in the saying that says dreams are always open if you can back it up with passion and effort. Also, I have been participating in an academic society called I.D.M since my freshman year to consistently study expert skills in design skills, shapes and proportions.

Designer of toys sold on the highway

It was December of 2005. This is the story of my freshman year in university, when I just began designing because I liked cars and mobiles.

There was a design membership program known for not selecting first year students, but I decided to participate in order to test my skills I learned from school seniors. One senior from the membership who was known for his skills, set up a test preparing project. It was day one, and I just had completed my first assignment by pouring everything I had into it . This was my f irst tr yout , and a l so my f irst design confirmation. The senior stared at f ive A3 papers completely filled with designs, then ripped it off vertically, say ing "hah , t h i s l ooks l i ke one of those toys on the highway". Many second and third year students were all there to see it , and I tr ied to shrug i t o f f but it was a massive shock for me, considering this was my first ever design confirmation.

After that incident, I promised myself that "I will become better than that senior and knock him down to size". My mortal design study began that way. In a way, I am here because of that senior.

My attitude on design

It makes me feel embarrassing even to mention the word,

11

design. As an aspiring designer, it has been already 4 years since I got involved in design on my own. But I don’t have a clue about design yet. I still don’t know what I should put in the concept of design, what process I should use more and what process I should consider good. These points are what I have to learn while pursuing my career as a profes-sional designer.

But, there are designs that I want to work on in the future. I often think about the first shape of design just like the first shape when a baby was born. Rather than first infusing the personality and ornaments into the design and refining its shape , I would objectively observe the nature of the product and study its usage, and through this process, I will approach the design. This would, I think, reveal ‘Yes, this is what I had in mind’ to the people.

Now, I will talk about my attitude toward design. I think that this attitude can be a better weapon than any other good methodologies I will use when working on design. When des ign ing someth ing , I do so, t h i nk ing that the produc t o f my des i gn wi l l be used by my parents , my families, or that I wil l g ive it to my beloved friends as a present. While keeping the product at their side and using it for a long t ime, if they feel satisfied with it, I think they would be thankful to have it, remembering me, and even if they feel uncomfortable using it, they would still feel sorry for me, remembering me. Since my dear families will use it, I think I went the extra mile and put more effort into it with more responsibility than ever before by taking into account the users’ safety, environment, and accessibility, among o ther s , f rom the beg i nn ing to the end, whi le picturing the image of my parents using it. In this regard, I worked on this portfolio without exception with the same responsibility and commitments as before, thinking that I would give it my parents or my beloved people around me as a present.

Gladiator’s bike

In the 22nd century, the gap between the rich and the poor is getting bigger as days go by. There has been dazzling developments in science and medical science, but they were only for the haves. The life expectancy of the haves got close to infinite, but it wasn't the same for the rest. The monopolistic phenomenon for the haves got intensified and the invisible, non-circulating class differences among people started to occur.

They gradually started to openly enjoy violent sports close to the human nature and such sports started getting filled with profes-sional athletes and methodical systems little by little.

Page 9: Jaewanworks.com

1716

It was like a physical match between gladiators at the colosseum, which was a sports for aristocrats during the Roman times. In a match that was similar to a war, they had to attack each other, survive and finish the race the fastest in order to win the event and acquire huge fortune and honor.

Motif was taken from the chariots used by the gladiators. Identity was taken from iron bats and knife blades on both sides, and they were transformed into modern weapons to design a transportation equipment.

By exposing all mechanical elements nakedly, the detail was shown and design was organized by implementing a shape that covers them.

When I expected the upcoming future through brain storming and a variety of researches, I came up with a diversity of trends. Of them, I focused on one keyword and surveyed again about mobiles and living trends of the past and the present time.

Based on the result, I made up a table as above. I observed the whole flow from the perspective of digital natives and thirties, and chose some key words that can be issues through living styles from the past to the present time.

To improve the ergonomic grips was made 8 dummy-mock-up and proprotions of extra seven types that be able to easily carry a hand with possilbly larger LCD to 14 people for four days.

Among them were compressed into reasonable proportions of four types, dummy mock-up's shape was specifically developed. To improve the grip of its gave chamber value at the each corner.

While I investigate data on the web, the market and an advisory of acquaintances, I was recognized that nowadays consumer-demand about the smart phone is become increased.

However, products was absenced from various proportion, from the mobile with 3 - 4 inches LCD to the tablet with 7 - 10 inches LCD. Because, I propose a new proportion with 5 - 6 inches LCD. It's called moblet.

E-book has been a hot issue since last year. So I suggest you the MID which is optimized to operate the e-book to the utmost level. The main and the sub LCD makes this MID possible to do a physical multi-tasking and the magnetic technology which has made the function of SNS and e-book more convenient and comfortable.

By removing the hinges and using the magnetic technology, It is different from how to use them with the structure of its folding way.

When unfolded the device, it has features of e-book with 6.0 inches LCD such as the kindle. In contrast, when folded it, has features of smart phone with 4.6 inches LCD.

Transparent LCD, 4.4 inches, in the middle of the devices are actively supported the various software such as Augmented Reality.

Smart electric cutting board2011 Personal projectplastic ( black ) and metal, chrome

This is a story happened last year. For the fist time, I cooked for lunch because of the girl friend's birthday. But I was very difficultly completed the lunch as searching the website about recipe, because I didn't know that how to cook. And I dumped expired foods inevitably because I had didn't know what expiration date. And I ate meals roughly and simply because didn't know the recipe. Then sunddenly hit my head.

"If I have a smart electric-cutting board, I would be nice."

Most people who didn't know how to cook replied that they feel an uncomfortable. And they were worried about clean issues of cutting board.

First, I have a brainstorming freely and arranged for a point. Depending on the uncomfortable point and how to use, I was investigated for impact on the cutting board.

But we do not know the dangers in your home or office. We uncon-sciously use the ordinary toothbrush that is exposed the many risks.

Then, we investiged the many stuff we frequently used in own home or office about germs density.

It is emerged the numerical value from 100 to 200 (/cm) at kitchen appliances, a mobile we frequently used and our hands. And it is memerged the value from 200 to 300 at toilet, cart handles in the large mart, shoes we put on and bills.

But there was a tremendous result, the minimum value 500 (/cm), in the toothbrush we used in home or office.Because, after we used it, most people neglected the toothbrush.

Absorbent paper is difficult to collect by volunteer person. In addition, many quantities are needed. Because it does not enough absorb the oil.

The oil mixed with seawater is needed purifica-tion for recycle. And severely polluted oil is discarded.

There are many types of tools and portability is important when it comes to storage as well.

[Unitools] is easier and more convenient to use. The most efficient tool that functions as a case that keeps many tools together, and also requires less strength than existing drivers is suggested.

Now, one does not have to search for tools here and there while storing tools that take up lots of space.
