A note from chairmanJohn Valiante

G et ready for another summer of free, family concerts at Snow King Ball Park.

JacksonHoleLive opens its season Sunday, June 21st to celebrate the summer solstice and Father’s Day with the John Butler Trio and the 10th Annual Crawfish Boil. Our fourth season will feature six concerts, including special July 3rd and 4th celebrations. We are thrilled to announce that JacksonHoleLive, with support from the Town of Jackson and Teton County Parks & Rec, has recenlty installed grass on the infield to reduce dust and mud while we kick up our heels!

Our mission at Center Management, Inc., (CMI), the nonprofit operator of the Snow King Sports and Events Center, is to support the development of the community’s young athletes. To succeed, we you’re your support of our JacksonHoleLive sponsors. Their dedication to this cause makes it possible to produce the music you enjoy while also supporting the Center’s operation. See you this summer and remember to thank the CMI team producing them.

Sincerely, John Valiante Chairman, Center Management, Inc.

ANDERSON EAST

The John Butler Trio are an Australian roots and jam band led by guitarist and vocalist John Butler, an APRA and ARIA-award winning musician. An independent role model, founder of Australia’s Jarrah Records, family man and proud skateboard aficionado, John Butler remains an enigma, in spite of his matey public persona. He is from everywhere and nowhere, an Australian/American, Everyman/Nowhere Man, and his music mixes rootedness and rootlessness, pain and celebration in a way that is utterly beguiling. His sound has elements of folk, funk, reggae and rock all drizzled through the '90s Seattle sensibility. Behind all that there is a wistful Celtic ambience surreally counterpointed by a Jamaican roots/rudeboy vibe. What could prove to be a mess somehow makes perfect sense, with the bluegrass finger-picking, hip-hop beats, and psychedelic wig-outs proving not uneasy bedfellows, but perfect complements.

John Butler is no pie-in-the-sky hippy. He has dirt beneath his feet: red dirt. He is well-known Down Under for his environmental and political commitment. His white Rasta look once suggested a teleported Bob Marley—but that has gone. The more recent barbered image makes him look like a handsome American from the Civil War era. His stare is hypnotic. Who will draw first, you or him? He is not, however, all gun and no trousers. He has put his money where his mouth is, fronting a campaign that helped stop a vast gas plant from despoiling the natural beauty of the Kimberley area in NW Australia. He has also set up a charitable trust that has enabled many aspiring artists to find an outlet. He is a man who cares about the world he is in and one who has tried, in his own way, to set in right.

But Butler is a maestro—he takes his influences and transcends them. He creates a sound that is as ancient as aboriginal bone-art, yet as modern as your Twitter feed. He has been hailed as one of the world’s greatest guitarists, a musician’s musician, one whose sound offers not three chords and the truth but a thousand.

Anderson East hails from Athens, Alabama and now calls Nashville his home. This rhythm and blues musi-cian is a powerhouse vocalist who is sure to intrigue with his passionate lyrics and dusty, soulful R&B sound. Anderson is currently in the midst of an extensive tour, including dates with Brandi Carlile, John Butler Trio and The Lone Bellow.

Producer Dave Cobb (who produced albums by Stur-gill Simpson and Jason Isbell) said of Anderson, “You don’t hear voices like that every day. The first time I saw him was at the Bluebird in Nashville—he started to sing and shut the place down. And he had the charm and wit to completely hold the audience in the palm of his hand. When I got the chance to have my imprint LCS, he was the first person I wanted to sign.

When he sings, you can hear the soil and landscape of great southern soul in his voice and he’s an amazing writer as well.”

FRIDAY, JULY 3 5:30 P.M.

You may remember Jared & The Mill from the parkinglot jam last summer. None of us could get enough ofthis super fun six-piece band from Phoenix, Arizona.Their story is personal, so we will let them tell it…

“When we first got started in the summer of 2011, we just wanted to play some music with our best buds, have a few shows and have a good time. As it goes, we were soon hammering along in the local scene, playing alongside the bands of new friends and old throughout Arizona. The wheels kept turning, and before we knew it, we had over two years of touring under our boots, playing in the living rooms, dive bars, venues, theaters, and even arenas of this big ol’ country of ours along-side fellow upcoming bands and with some of the big-gest acts we had always looked up to.

“Playing for 50 people one night in a smoky bar and the very next night opening up and playing for 18,000 in an arena was inspiring and eye-opening to say the

least. Opening up for the likes of Zac Brown Band, Barry Gibb, Boy & Bear, Run River North, Della Mae, Cake, Joe Pug, Horse Feathers, Flogging Molly, The Killers, Allen Stone and others while touring alongside bands just getting their start like us was a real hon-or. We certainly gained invaluable experience from all those shows and all those trials, but something else happened out there on the road for us, something we have a hard time explaining, but anyone who’s spent some time out there on the interstate understands: We became not just friends, but family.

“Our music has been called, compared and regarded by a number of different names and genres, and we’ve been influenced and shaped by many different events and people, but more than anything, we’d like to think that some shred of the Southwest—of our home—can be found in the heart of our music. It ain’t blues, and it ain’t country. It ain’t bluegrass, and it ain’t indie rock. It’s something in-between like most things here in the Southwest, and that’s just the way we like it. So here we are, with a new EP to record and a busy year ahead. We’ve got some new tunes and a sound that has grown, and we’re eager as hell to share it with all of you. From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for listening.”

JARED & THE MILL

Wyatt Lowe is a cocktail mix of vintage '50s rockabilly/blues, American roots and “Analog Rock N Roll” (Social Distortion meets Jimmie Vaughan). The band consists of Wyatt Lowe (lead guitar/vocals) and the Mayhem Kings: Marty Camino (upright bass), Pete Closson (drums) and Jason Fritts (saxophone). Wyatt Lowe has quickly turned into a hot new artist with potent power focused on playing driving, soulful rockabilly, blues and roots.

Wyatt Lowe was born and raised into the blues at Chappy’s Roadhouse, his family’s BBQ and Blues restaurant in Temecula, California. “Sodapop” would stand at the edge of the stage and watch the best regional Southern California blues players perform. The

next day, he would be found at home in front of the mirror, harp in one hand and his play guitar in the other workin’ it out. At the age of 8, he began guitar lessons and found his true musical passion in rock 'n' roll and blues. His style and tone is a cross-over between traditional rockabilly, blues and roots, giving his music a punch. wyattlowemusic.com

ONE TON PIG

SATURDAY, JULY 4 5:30 P.M.

CHICKEN FRIED BLUEGRASS & FIREWORKS

One Ton Pig is a sextet that melds the hard luck singer-songwriter tradition of artists like Willie Nelson, Johnny Cash and Steve Earle with the dazzling musicality and imaginative genre-bending of jam band musicians for a fingerprint aesthetic that blurs the lines between folk, country, jazz, gospel, bluegrass and rock'n'roll. One Ton Pig is comprised of

Michael Batdorf (guitar, vocals, main songwriter), Tim Farris (mandolin, vocals, co-songwriter), Justin Smith (guitar, vocals, co-songwriter), Matt Herron (violin), Andy Calder (bass) and Jason Baggett (drums).

One Ton Pig just released their fourth album, Lastville, in June. Tracks for this release were recorded at Henhouse Studios with the renowned Ben Winship on the faders and they were performed mostly live in the studio. The group decided to go this route in order to capture more of the “live” feel of their shows for which they have become known. Lastville puts forth One Ton Pig’s maturity as songwriters, performers and artists.

One Ton Pig has appeared at such festivals as Targhee Fest, Jackson Hole Mountain Fest and Oyster Ridge Fest, and shared the bill with such esteemed artists as the McCourys, Wood Brothers, Chris Robinson and the New Earth Mud, Railroad Earth and Old Crow Medicine Show. The sextet has three times been voted “Best Band in Jackson Hole” by the readers of Planet Jackson Hole. And a new accolade is coming up: One Ton Pig will have its songs featured in and appear playing live in a film entitled Mahjong and the West.

LOCAL BREW

The food at Snake River Brewing is not your average run-of-the-mill pub fare. Open the menu and you will find fresh salads, wood-fired pizzas, and local, grass-fed beef burgers.

We strive to keep things local. In fact, we get our malt from nearby Pocatello, Idaho, and after we brew our beer, our spent grain gets delivered to the Mead Ranch (just five miles away) by Oly to feed to their beef cattle. Then, to bring it full circle, we purchase their beef, which is from cattle treated humanely and never placed in feed lots, administered growth hormones or routinely shot up with antibiotics.

If you visit us midday, you will enjoy scents of our freshly-baked goods wafting from the kitchen. We have an in-house bakery where we make all of our breads, rolls and desserts.

And we love to give back to the community. Not only do we support JacksonHoleLive, but we give to countless other local nonprofits. We hope our commitment is reflected in our beer, food and service.

The first words of Lyrics Born’s eighth album speak volumes about where the legendary MC stands these days: “Real people do real things. Yes we do.” The Bay Area resident born Tom Shimura has stood at the peak of high-minded underground rap, explored the far reaches of interstellar synth-hop and blazed trails galore both solo and as half of Latyrx. Twenty-two years after he was introduced to the world with Send Them, Lyrics Born has made some of the most organic, original, and adventurous music of his entire career.

While touring with Latyrx last, he made time for an extended stay in a place that he’s long admired: America’s first and last real-deal music town, New Orleans. LB stocked up on pads and pens, rented a cozy house three blocks from the famous Maple Leaf Bar and booked two weeks’ worth of sessions with Galactic guys Robert Mercurio and Ben Ellman at their Uptown studio. Then, they let it rip. Funk has always been a part of what Lyrics Born does—his unique vocal swagger dishes out melody and rhyme with equal aplomb. But never has he evoked the idiom so directly or made an album that feels so alive. He turned the production over entirely (also a first) to his NOLA colleagues, giving them space to do what they do best, and him the freedom to write. Lyrics brings his full band to the base of Snow King for what is sure to be the dance party of the summer.

WEDNESDAY, JULY 15 5:30 P.M.

Craft is back! Nick Cottingham, a.k.a. Craft, is a Jackson Hole native who got his start in music with the local hip-hop group Biomecca. After moving to San Francisco to pursue an audio production degree and working with the likes of Grieves of Rhymesayers Entertainment and legendary emcee Phesto of Souls of Mischief/Hieroglyphics fame, he settled in Los Angeles for a year, founding the pop/hip-hop collective BabeWave. Craft recently moved back to Jackson and joined by Cut la Whut and DJ Londo on four turntables, reminiscent of the first Biomecca shows. Snow King will be the perfect reintroduction to the Jackson Hole stage.www.nickcottingham.com

Cut la Whut has been a key player in the Jackson Hole electronic music scene since the turn of the century, mixing music, filling dance floors and bringing loads of talent to the area over the last 15 years. You may have seen or heard him play at festivals such as Shambhala Music Festival, The Bounce, Burning Man or just touring the western half of North America. Heavily influenced by hip-hop, drum, bass and break beats early on in his career, he is known for his party rocker style of DJing. Not one to shy away from mashin’ all styles of music together during a show, Cut la Whut will be sure to take you on a funked-up, body rockin’ experience full of subsonic future sounds.Facebook/djcutlawhut

Always embracing his diverse love of a wide variety of musical genres and styles, DJ Londo (Nick Londy) was a known name in the Charlotte, NC scene for over 10 years before the lure of skiing led him back to his hometown where he was quickly recognized as one of Jackson Hole’s best DJs. Since his college radio show days in 1998, he has prided himself on his multifarious musical tastes, mixing style and ability to pilot any crowd on any piece of equipment. Dependable, experienced, and a catalyst for good times, DJ Londo continues to garner the attention of an ever-growing list of the highest profile venues with his unpredictably fun performances. His unique eclectic sound and “Select Mixes” have been heard in over 50 countries around the world.

Alejandro Rose-Garcia is professionally known as Shakey Graves, and with his new record, And the War Came, he extends the ground—emotionally and sonically—broken by his 2011 self-released debut

album, Roll the Bones, which brought him national acclaim and established the powerful, mesmerizing Shakey Graves sound of Rose-Garcia accompanying himself on guitar and a handmade kick-drum built out of an old suitcase. NPR Music named him one of 10 artists music fans “should’ve known in 2012,” describing him as “astonishing...unclassifiably original. And frighteningly good.” Paste included him in a “Best of What’s Next” feature, praising his “gnarly composite of blues and folk,” while The New York Times observed that Shakey Graves “makes the one-man band approach look effortless.”

An experienced actor who had a recurring role on Friday Night Lights and appeared in several of Robert

Rodriguez’s films, Rose-Garcia started making music as part of New York City’s “anti-folk” scene. While knocking around the underground music community in Los Angeles, he saw a performance by one-man band Bob Log III that pointed his work in a new direction. Since returning to Austin, Rose-Garcia has become so closely associated with his hometown that for the last three years, Austin has celebrated “Shakey Graves Day” by mayoral proclamation.

While his remarkable success story continues to unfold, Alejandro Rose-Garcia sees “And the War Came” as a pivotal step in the evolution of Shakey Graves. “This is a doorframe album, as we’re going into a new building,” he says. “It’s taste of everything—what might come in the future, which might include just guitar or the one-man band thing, but not pigeonholed to any one sound. I wanted to open some stuff up and get people ready for wherever it’s going.”

shakeygraves.com

Times are tough for just about everyone these days, especially for those who live in what are often referred to as the “flyover states” in the heart of the country. People have become tougher, their skins have grown thicker and they have become much harder to win over. That especially holds true when it comes to the music scene. The overwhelming success that Turnpike Troubadours have had on the so-called Red Dirt circuit of those states says a lot about the quintet’s authen-ticity and fire, particularly because their music is not exactly what that scene is known for producing.

“When we first started playing, people couldn’t have cared less that we were there,” recalls Troubadours frontman Evan Felker. “They were there to drink beer and raise hell and they didn’t really care what music was playing while they did it. But as we went on and as we got better, they started to listen. I mean, they were still drinkin’ plenty of beer, but before too long,

they were ac-tually coming to hear us and asking us to play our songs, and not just covers of traditional favorites and all the other stuff we’d been doing.”

Not only did the crowds get more attentive, they kept getting bigger. As time went on, and the Troubadours broadened their touring circle, they moved on from tiny clubs in the more obscure corners of the Sooner state and started hitting—and selling out—prestigious venues.

San Diego-based iconic performer Karl Denson is set for another busy summer. With his own band, Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, he’ll play a number of select theatre dates and high profile festivals across the U.S.

The shows will have added significance as drummer Alan Evans (best known for his work with Soulive) will be joining the Tiny Universe. Denson will also play a handful of dates with The Greyboy Allstars, the seminal boogaloo revivalist band he co-founded in the early '90s. In addition, he’ll return to the fold in his recurring role as saxophonist in The Rolling Stones and Slightly Stoopid for a slew of summer shows.

Karl Denson’s most recent recorded work can be heard on the Tiny Universe LP, New Ammo. The collection showcases the grittier side of the band’s musical oeuvre, including stand-outs like “My Baby” featuring singer Nicki Bluhm, “Everybody Knows That” and his raucous rendition of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army.” The album has received wide acclaim. All Music declared the effort, “easily their most musically adventurist album yet,” while DownBeat praised it as “music for both the party and for fans of instrumental prowess.”

Approaching two decades strong, Karl Denson's Tiny Universe is a prolific touring juggernaut that regularly performs over 150 shows annually. They’re currently working on material for a new studio album to be released later this year. Denson himself is an acclaimed and highly in-demand saxophonist and songwriter who first came to national attention as a member of Lenny Kravitz’s Let Love Rule-era band.

Madelaine (Maddy) German is a keyboardist, singer-songwriter and music composer originally from the Shenandoah Valley of Virginia and currently based out of Jackson Hole. Maddy grew up the daughter of a music professor who was also an avid church mu-sician, and Maddy spent her formative musical years immersed in both the spiritual music of the church and also the technical world of the Classical greats, study-ing Classical voice and piano from early childhood through college. After receiving a music degree from James Madison University in Virginia, she found herself in L.A. as an intern in the studio of film score composer Hans Zimmer, where she learned how to score music for film.

Maddy’s love for outdoor adventure landed her in Jack-son Hole, where she also discovered her love of mu-sical improvisation for the first time. She immediately adopted her new-found passion for improv.

In 2013, she formed Maddy and the Groove Spots, a band designed to channel the essence of personal expression through the live music that so shaped her worldview as a young child growing up in the world of church music. Rooted in a neo-soul / synth-funk mu-sical sound, influenced by Maddy’s time spent in the worlds of Classical, musical theatre and film scoring music, and driven by Maddy’s lyrically-powered original song material, the band has a distinctly original sound. Maddy’s “Groove Spots” are a rotating cast of improvi-sational, often jazz-trained musicians who all bring their own voice to the group.
