Rise of the Common Man-the regular person/farmer become the center of attention in politics

• Democratic Spirit- leveling of classes in US (rich and poor do the same things in US)– How is this one class spirit seen

in the US today?• American definition of Equality

Election of 1824- 1st Presidential election in which the candidate with most votes does not win

• 4 candidates for President– Andrew Jackson- war hero– John Q. Adams= secretary of state– Henry Clay- speaker of House of Rep.

• Election Results- Jackson won pop vote but did not win a majority in Electoral college– 12th Amendment- House of Rep selects Pres.

• ?Is this a fair way to elect a President? Explain?– No- whoever winds the most votes should win– Yes- the winner should have a majority

(prevents a small faction from winning)

• Corrupt Bargain- Clay tells his supporters to select Adams, Clay becomes Sec. of State, Jackson loses– How does the result of this election go against the ideals

(Rise of the Common Man) politicians have tried to preach to “Ordinary Citizens”?

• House of Rep, not the people elected the Pres

incredibly good soil for cotton• ?What do you feel is the

American attitude regarding Native Americans in this instance?

• 5 Civilized Tribes- tribes of SW – Cherokee- assimilation- try to fit in

by showing they can adopt white ways

– Alphabet- lang. on paper» Phoenix- newspaper

Indian Removal from S. West• Georgia Legislature- Cher. Have no right to their land, get out of GA

– Worcester v. Ga.- SC. Sides w. Cherokee• Jackson’s Response- “Let the Supreme Court enforce it’s decision”

ignores the decision– ?Explain how Jackson failed in his responsibility as President?

» President’s job is to enforce the law– ?Why do you think Jackson’s felt he could neglect his

responsibility?» The people supported Jackson because they want the

Indian land• Trail of Tears- 15k Cherokee forced march, 4000 die of exhaustion,

starvation, disease – ?What is so criminal or repulsive about this journey? How does it violate

US ideals?• Preventable causes of death, Am. Gov. allowed Cherokee to die

– How do you think Americans reacted to news of the Trail of Tears?• Did not care, Americans wanted the land
