News from the Chair Dear Members Welcome to our newsletter. Make yourself a cup of tea and enjoy the read. This issue is full of interesting bits and pieces, as well as very important quilting information. Our postcard project for the Transplant Games is running well and we have received some beautiful postcards. Thank you to all who have contributed so far. We are looking forward to seeing all those still to be handed in. Please make an effort to make a postcard for this worthwhile cause. At the next meeting, please make time to look at our albums. Lorraine has gone to a lot of trouble and they are looking great. You might just recognize your own quilt there! Please wear/bring your quilted bags, hat, scarf, jacket, skirt or even shoes! Our theme in June is Wearable Art. Congratulations to the Centurion Quilters on a very successful exhibition. They also hosted the Tri-Nations Challenge between Korea, South Africa and Japan. Through these efforts we are getting more and more recognition as quilters. There are two BIG quilting events taking place this year. We have the National Quilt Festival taking place in Bloemfontein from 1 – 7 July. The other event is the IQCA at the Emperor’s Palace (6 – 8 September). Bookings for classes are now open. Thank you to everyone for sending us possible venues. We have now looked at 13 and so far have not been able to find a suitable venue. The one we think will work is unfortunately not available for this year. Therefore we have to fall back on the Wierda Park venue, namely the DR
Church in Piet Hugo Street, Wierda Park. We have so much to talk about and to chat to you about that we cannot wait to see you all at the June meeting. I imagine you feel the same about your friends that you too only get to catch up with at the Friendship Meeting.
Groete, Ina Meyer

1. The National Quilt Festival
Arrangements for the 2013 Quilt Festival are progressing well and we hope that a large group of JQG members will be attending this enjoyable event. SAQG will, for the first time, have booth at the Festival where Regional Guilds can advertise their Guilds and general information will be made available to the public. Members are asked to assist the SAQG by doing duty at this booth. If any member who is going to the Festival, is willing to assist by manning the booth for a few hours during the week of the festival, please contact Corrianne so that I can put you in touch with the organiser of the booth. Your assistance in this matter will be most appreciated.
2. Book on Quilting in South Africa
This project is nearing its end and should be ready by July so that it can be launched at the Festival in Bloemfontein. We are all looking forward to seeing the final project!
3. SAQG website
The website appears to be running well, since the Chairperson of the Guild receives many enquiries through the website. A teachers list has been posted on the website and can be accessed by all guilds and individual members. Visit www.quiltsouthafrica.co.za.
4. European Patchwork Meeting
Elsa received about 75 quilts for consideration and she has sent the photographs off to SAQG judges for their opinion. I hope that some of our members have submitted photographs of their quilts. Please contact me if your quilt has been chosen to go to France so that we can publish this in a forthcoming Newsletter. Please visit the official EPM website www.patchwork-europe.com for pictures and information.
As has been decided, quilts for the Travelling Exhibition will be chosen from quilts entered at the NQF 2013 in Bloemfontein. Doreen Crause will send a “Permission to travel” form to all the quilters concerned. SAQG judges will select quilts that will travel easily and these quilts will not be returned to the artists after the NQF, but will be stored in the Gauteng area until the launch of the exhibition at IQCA on 6 September 2013 where after they will travel the country.
6. IQCA and Free to Express Challenge
The second IQCA will be held at Emperors Palace in Johannesburg from 6 – 8 September 2013. The main attraction this year will be the celebrated singing quilter, Ricky Tims and the teachers will be Lisa Walton (Australia), Patti Hempen and Barbara Olson (USA) and Wilna de Beer (RSA). For more information visit www.iqcafrica.com Barbara Robb is coordinating the volunteers for the IQC Africa. If you would like to be a part of this exciting event, then volunteer to help in the following area: WHITE GLOVE ANGELS Responsibilities: 1 hour shift patrolling the exhibition hall to ensure the integrity of the artworks on display.
This will be on a first come first served basis. Barbara can be contacted on 072-122-7656 or [email protected] SAQG together with the sponsors IQCA, has launched a challenge, Free to Express with prize money of R15,000! The quilts that are accepted, have the opportunity of being exhibited at IQCA 2013 and will also possibly travel. The closing date for entries was 2 April and the photographs of the quilts need to be submitted by 30 June 2013.
7. Membership numbers
Each individual member of SAQG (that includes all the JQG members) will receive a unique number which will identify them when registering for National Festivals or entering their quilts in national competitions. You will be receiving this information as soon as the process has been completed.
The word Chatelaine ("shaht uh len") is derived from the Latin word meaning castle. It refers to the lady who, in the medieval times, was in charge of the day-to-day castle functions. The chatelaine ordered supplies, did the bookkeeping and supervised the servants. She also taught the children who lived in the castle and served as a guide to the guests. One of her most important responsibilities was to keep the keys to the castle. Because the chatelaine kept the keys, she needed a place to put them where they would be safe and accessible. By the 17th century a metal jeweled ornament, called a chatelaine, was a popular practical organizing device. It hung from a pocket or attached to a person's belt. Dangling down from the chatelaine would be a few chains and hooks. Keys, a pen, and a note-pad were among the things that could be carried on the chatelaine. The chatelaine, also became a fashion accessory that was often given as a wedding present from a husband to his bride. Sewing and needlework were an important part of a young girl's education and these accessories were ideal in organizing notions. Chatelaines were made of silver, brass, steel, leather, or fabric, depending on the financial status of the household. There was a decorative clip that attached to the waistband with three to seven long chains with clasps suspended from it. Toward the end of the 19th century, dresses with no waist line (and no place for a chatelaine) became fashionable and the waist chatelaine developed into the brooch type and the fabric type worn around the neck. Ina Calitz writes: Nooit in my wildste drome het ek gedink dat ek
as Kapenaar so ‘n heerlike dag in Pretoria sal beleef nie.
Wilna du Toit writes: Where do I start? Do I start with the excitement of experiencing the
discovery of the Quilters Guild and their Committee Members? Do I start with my utter relief
when discovering the quilting fabric shops? Do I start with the adventure of choosing fabrics and
cutting them for the Quilters Day project? Or do I start with the glorious feeling of contentment
I experienced whilst sharing a few peaceful hours with wonderful women and fabulous life stories?
I think, in trying to see God’s quilt, it might be the wisest to start with the above mentioned
questions all at once. Whilst living in Kuwait, a fellow South African (Chrissie) introduced me, to the
Kuwait Textile and Quilters Association and my Pakistani Quilting Mentor (Aiesha), thus leading to
many other interesting memories. Quilters Day felt like a family of
women, sharing a passion for difficult maths, beautiful fabrics, and
precision cutting, which would, ultimately,
result in a rainbow of floating stars. How
wonderful to have been part of it and to
have met you all!
On 16 March about 30 quilters gathered in the church hall in Lyttelton to learn to make a Floating Star quilt, under Ina Meyer’s instruction. Everyone came prepared with cut fabric and were soon off to a flying start with Ina helping to quickly iron fabric as required. After tea and cupcakes, rows of stars started appearing and Ina asked that the quilts be completed for the June Guild meeting.

Condolences and Congratulations
We were sorry to hear of the passing of Thea
Lourens’ Husband. We’re thinking of Ina Meyer’s husband whose
brother-in-law died tragically in a plane crash. May you find comfort in the memories that are yours to treasure always and find strength knowing that we keep you in our thoughts and prayers. We are thinking of Louise Wolhuter who has
spent a difficult time in hospital. We look forward to seeing you at the Friendship Meeting.
Congratulations to Natasja van Wyk on the birth of Nicolai, and to the two proud Grannies Susara van Wyk and Esmé Etsebeth.
Unfortunately, we are unable to print
the newsletter in colour. But you can receive it in full colour

dit so!
Martha Wouters.
Kom kuier gerus een Woensdag by ons.
Postcards
for World Transplant Games
As you are aware, we’re making 4” x 6” Fabric Postcards for the World Transplant Games to be held in Durban. They must please be handed in at the Jacaranda Guild Friendship Meeting on 8 June 2013. Let’s make LOTS of postcards for this huge event which takes place from 28 July to 5 August 2013!
“The World Transplant Games 2013 are being hosted in South Africa in the sunny city of Durban! Recipients who have received life saving organ transplants from more than 55 countries worldwide will compete in various sports in the hopes of winning Gold, Silver and Bronze medals for their country! The games celebrate the triumph of the human spirit and the hope that is behind every transplant.
The games will host 13 different sports codes at various venues around Durban. Touring and sightseeing opportunities will be plentiful for all wanting to experience the vibrancy, beautiful coast lines and diverse cultures which make Durban, the Zulu Kingdom, a unique and exciting destination.” See http://www.wtg2013.com. Please ensure that all your details are on the registration form. An email address or fax number is very important to ensure that all the necessary information for the upcoming course is sent to you. Enige navra of inligting, kontak Erla Cilliers Email: [email protected] Cell phone: 083 337 0037 or 012 667 1761 (a/h)
I love opportunities to learn new things and I must say quilt courses are extra special because we attend them by choice (unlike some work courses sometimes) and therefore with a song in our hearts! And then there is the nurturing of quilters friendships which take place whilst we learn! The good news is that there is one more opportunity after Festival this year. Hester Meintjies will present a class to make the pretty Country Dolls on the photo below, on the 14th of September. Hester is a talented teacher and one usually learns a lot more than just the course content. One often also gets solutions to little sewing problems or a shortcut to do something better - so all in all worth the money! The course fee for Guild members is R160 plus R80 for the kit, and for non Guild members R320, plus R80,00 for the kit. The kit is enough to make one doll’s body and you will need to buy fabric to dress your doll. You will find the registration form and payment details on page 16.

Elaine Barnard Course
A “WOW!” Saturday
Elaine Greyvenstein WOW !! – in vandag se lewe vol SMS taal en
akronieme wat orals gebruik word, kan
WOW dalk staan vir goed soos “Wise Older
Woman”, “Work On Weekends” of selfs
“Women Organising the World”, maar in
hierdie geval was dit sommer net ‘n doodgewone “WOW!”. Dit is presies hoe die kursus op
Saterdag, 9 Maart saam met Elaine Barnard was.
Elaine showed us how to make different kinds of fabric
beads, using all kinds of scraps and threads - from silk,
cotton, voile, organza and even all your little off-cut
pieces of yarn and threads. Absolutely anything goes.
We soon realised that the more colourful and contrasting
the fabrics, the prettier the end result.
ervaring.
I have declared War on Waste in my sewing room, as the World Of Wearable arts opened
to me So keep your eyes and ears open to What’s On Where – you might miss out on a
World Of Wonders waiting to be discovered.
What could be more
enjoyable and rewarding
than spending a Saturday
with quilting friends and
learning new skills? I
think I speak on behalf
of all who attended the
course in thanking Elaine
for presenting this
“WOW!” course to us.

JQG SHARE AND CARE Jeanette Botha
As Jacaranda Members we are going to get involved in helping at Eljada House in
Daspoort. Currently these people are preparing over 1000 meals monthly and there
are women who make articles daily to sell. There are a few sewing machines
available but skills are required to teach these ladies to use these machines to
their full potential, and to teach them new techniques.
We would therefore like to ask ALL our members to help in the following ways:
Please contact Jeanette on 083 964 4335 or [email protected] to become
In 2012 Gerda responded to a suggestion that blocks be crocheted or knitted and put together by someone, and to be given to charity and this is how her “Make a Difference” project began. Crocheted and knitted blankets were given to the Olievenhoutbosch Disabled Organisation and other charities. In 2013 the Margaretha Ackerman Home for the Elderly is being supported and 200 blankets are required for the residents in this home by June 2013. To become involved, knit or crochet blocks, or blankets, make quilts or quilt tops, donate wool or orphan blocks. Contact Gerda for more information (details above).
