Had we u s e d s i m p l e r a n d o m i z a t i o n we h a v ed e t e r m i n e d t h a t t h e t w o g r o u p s w o u l d h a v e b e e n s i g -n i f i c a n t l y i m b a l a n c e d f o r b a s e l i n e s y s t o l i c b l o o d p r e s -s u r e ( C o r n i s h e t a l . , 1 9 9 1 ) . I n a s t u d y c o m -p a r i n g a m l o d i p i n e w i t h n i t r e n d i p i n e t h e t o t a l n u m b e r o fa d v e r s e e v e n t s w a s h i g h e r i n t h e n i t r e n d i p i n e g r o u p ,a n d s t a t i s t i c a l l y s i g n i f i c a n t i n c r e a s e s i n h e a r t r a t e w e r es e e n a f t e r 2 a n d 4 w e e k s o f t r e a t m e n t ( E n g l e r t , 1 9 8 9 ) .
