KIDS & FAMILY

What's All the H.Y.P.E. About?Empowering Kids with Knowledge

he Jewish Commu-nity Center of Houston is taking kid’s fitness to a whole new level. Several

programs are currently being offered that encourage children to get active and develop healthy habits. About 25 youth are participat-ing in children’s programming at the JCC Fitness Center. Our first initia-tive is an eight-week program, called H.Y.P.E. (Helping Youth through Physical Empowerment), which is designed to empower boys and girls ages 9-13 with knowledge that will help them to make the right deci-sions about food and exercise. Childhood obesity has tripled in the last decade. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that one in three kids and teens can be classified as obese or overweight, a health risk that increases the odds

of heart disease, diabetes and other killers. Some experts believe that if obesity among children increases, our current generation could become the first in American history to live shorter lives than our parents. “We are not focusing on weight loss. We want our kids to feel good physically and emotionally. This kind of program helps with self-esteem, confidence, and self-discipline that they can carry into their adulthood.” said Monique Brown, JCC Fitness Center Director. On Sundays at the J you will find another group of kids participating

in a training program for the 2nd Annual JCC Family Triathlon on Sunday, May 2 at the JCC Houston in partnership with Achieve-Houston. The 10-week structured training program led by Robin Fortenberry, JCC Fitness Center Instructor, trains for participation in a triathlon. The program focuses on swimming, biking and running skills. If you are interested in any of these youth fitness programs, contact Monique Brown at [email protected] or 713.551.7211 ext. 3105.

ptions, Options, Options! Along with the classic

camps, like Kaleidoscope, Dance, Art, Gymnastics, Tennis, Circus of the Kids, etc., the JCC has added several new, really vibrant camps to the line-up. New this summer is a Cooking Camp, a Movie Moguls Camp and one of the most exciting, Camp WITS (Writers In Schools), where kids create short stories and poems through writing, drama and art and then experience camp activities during the afternoon. Many of the camps offer half day and full day options.

There is something for every-one, and in addition, the children can take advantage of the fabulous aquatics facilities and instructors. The JCC camp experience gives children the opportunity to recon-nect with old friends, develop new

friendships and make memories that will last a lifetime. My

daughter has kept in touch with her Kaleidoscope counselor

throughout the school year. She can’t wait for camp this sum-mer! I can't think of anything better than a happy child." For more information about Summer

Day Camp at the J, call Randy Comensky at 713.729.3200 ext. 3247. You can learn more about all the fabulous camps the JCC has to offer at jcchouston.org.

CENT ER FOR JEWISH LIVING & LEARNING

ven though the summer is quickly approaching, the Center for Jewish Living and Learn-ing will offer several

new programs and mini-courses in April and May. Plus, several of these opportunities will be led by new fac-ulty from across the community. After Passover, the CJLL is of-fering three text-based courses. If you are interested in exploring our prayers, Rabbi Judy Abrams, Ph.D. will offer a six week course that studies both the simple and deeper meaning behind the words of our prayer book. If you like a good debate, explore the Talmud with Rabbi Ranon Teller of Congrega-tion Brith Shalom. This course will introduce the basic structure and argumentation that has become the

E hallmark of what is considered the central rabbinic text of the Jewish people. Contemporary issues can be explored in the CJLL’s collaboration with Rabbi Yossi Grossman of the Jewish Ethics Institute. He will lead a three-week course on business, law and medi-cal ethics. Hebrew is not required to participate in these mini-courses. You can also hit the road on the CJLL’s exploration of Texas Jewish history with a visit to Schulenberg and Hallettsville led by Keith Rosen of Houston Jewish Tours. The tour will include a visit to the local syna-gogue and cemeteries that serve the Jewish community between Houston and San Antonio.

In celebration of Yom Ha’Atzmaut (Israel Independence Day), the CJLL will present The Four Faces of Israel. This one-man show, presented by ac-tor and Rabbi Benji Levene, explores Diaspora-Israel relations and the

challenges and opportunities that Israel presents to world Jewry. For the first time ever, the CJLL will offer a class for Hebrew speakers (intermediate, advanced and native speakers) that will explore the Jewish life through Hebrew films, articles and music. Finally, CJLL programming will also continue into June this year, a

new initiative to expand programming into the early summer. In addition to the annual Summer Israeli Film Series, the CJLL will also present a one-woman show called My Mother's Medicine starring Cheryl L. Kaplan

and has invited Dr. Alick Isaacs, last year’s Horvitz Scholar, to

return for a ten-day residency. Stay tuned for more information about these programs in May and visit jcchouston.org for updates.

For the first time ever, the CJLL will offer a class for Hebrew speakers that will explore the Jewish life through Hebrew films, articles and music.

Talmudic Reasoning Instructor: Rabbi Ranon Teller6 Weeks Beginning Monday, April 127:30 – 8:30 PM $45m/$60p

Exploring our PrayersInstructor: Rabbi Judith Abrams, Ph.D.Six Wednesdays beginning April 14 (Class will not meet on 4/19)7:30 – 8:30 PM $45m/$60p

In this class we will first look at the plain meaning of selected prayers and then explore three other perspectives – the prayer’s numerological, rabbinic and mystical meanings. This approach, called PARDES (Peshat, Remez, Drash, and Sod) is used to understand Torah. Now use it to understand the prayerbook and deepen your prayer experience. No knowledge of Hebrew is required.

This tour also takes you to the Jewish cemeteries in Hallettsville. Time permitting the trip may also include a visit to the Stanzel Model Aircraft Museum in Schulenburg.

Explore the many sides of Israel with a one-man show with actor and educator Rabbi Benjamin (Benji) Levene. The Four Faces of Israel is a thought-provoking portrayal of four stereotypical Jewish personalities, which raises key questions regarding

Locally, J-Serve will be assisting various organizations by building and painting shelves and organizing local libraries, painting literacy chairs for classrooms, repairing damaged books, creating books on tapes, and creating alphabet books to help refugees learn English. Twelve amazing teens serve on the J-Serve Teen Leadership Coun-cil including Yael Brown, Sydnee Fielkow, Lawrence Katz, Sam Kusin, Kali Lang, Hannah Lapin, Miriam Lavenda, Cory Levy, Sarah Orsak, Samantha Rosenberg, Andrew Rubenstein, and Ben Zabelchansky. These teens are guided by Chair, Debbie Lapin, and JCC, BBYO, and BIFTY staff, Maytal Babajanov, Eric Bishop, Anita Blustein, Matt Frank and Michelle Renfrow.

-Serve is the national day of Jewish com-munity service for teens organized by Panim. The Houston JCC is partnering this year with BBYO and BIFTY to lead projects that will focus

on the importance of education and literacy locally, nationally and internationally. The most exciting of which will be rais-ing the money to build a sustainable school in Haiti in partnership with Free the Children. J-Serve will also be supporting literacy in other communities ravaged by natural disasters, including a book drive benefiting impoverished schools in both New Orleans and Galveston.

Teen member, Hannah Lapin, has been involved in J-Serve each year it has been in Houston, ad-ditionally serving on the National Advisory Board. “J-Serve has given me the confi-dence, skills and knowledge to plan, organize and implement events on a large scale,” said Lapin. Students in the 9th thru 12th grade may register for J-Serve 2010. Please visit our website at www.jserve.org or call The Merfish Center at 713.838.7200 for more information.

T he JCC does more than just provide water aero-bics and fitness classes for senior adults. For the

last 16 years, the CHAI program has been helping seniors recover from strokes, macular degeneration and mild memory loss by keeping them busy and active. Every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 10 AM -2 PM seniors are given a hot kosher lunch and participate in ac-tivities designed for their well-being.

“It’s the best way for Houston seniors to remain alert, have fun, and get out and about,” said Karen Wolff, CHAI program coordinator. The CHAI Program has been designed to keep seniors involved, maintain their social skills and to encourage interaction with each other. Speakers, exercise programs, art classes, opera appreciation classes and monthly trips are some of the activities that add color to their lives and stimulate their minds.

“One of the goals of this program is to rekindle the participant’s sense of belonging to the community at large. This is evident in the spirit and attitude of our participants. Having a place to go where they are welcomed and engaged in activities makes a real difference in their lives. This is their place; their time to be social, accepted and engaged,” said Wolff. The program is committed to reassuring families and friends who take care of senior adults that the

CHAI program is a safe and nurtur-ing place where there is supervision and encouragement, giving caretakers much needed respite without worry-ing about the safety of their loved one. For additional information on the CHAI Program, contact Karen Wolff at 713.729.3200 ext. 3262.

ver 550 generous guests gathered at the Westin Galleria on Saturday, February 13 to celebrate the 20th Annual Children’s Scholarship

Ball. An impressive fundraising effort reaffirmed an ongoing vision and commitment to provide scholarships through the Irvin Kaplan Children’s Scholarship Fund. New this year was a chance to preview and bid on silent auction items “online” before the event. With an excess of 300 items, this year’s auction raised well over $100,000, which will provide opportunities for numerous children in our community to benefit from programs at the JCC. Although the nostalgia of the evening will fade, the need continues. For more information on children’s scholarships or to make a contribution, please call Cynthia Whittington at 713.729.3200 ext. 3212.
