Inter-school Combined Sports Meet

n 12 July, Xinmin participated in an Inter-school Combined Sports Meet, with Nan Chiau High School and Yishun Town Secondary School. Organised by Nan Chiau High and held at Bishan Stadium, the first ever sports meet among these three schools comprised numerous exciting track-and-field events and was a resounding success. Overall, Xinmin Secondary School came in first with a score of slightly below six hundred while Nan Chiau came in second, followed by Yishun Town. As put aptly by Kwek Kang Ying (301), a Xinmin 1500m runner, “It was great to experience the Xinmin spirit at this sports meet.” That, was indeed true.

English Language FestivalReported by: Jasmine Tay (302) and Teng Wei Wen (301)

! he English Language Festival comprises a myriad of different events and activities. On 15 July, the teachers launched the festival with a hilarious skit on the importance of using good grammar that left everyone laughing heartily. During recess, the Green Pen Movement was held to allow students to correct bad grammar. On 17 and 18 July, students competed in a Spelling Bee, where they had to spell random words given to them correctly to emerge the winner. On 22 July, the activity “Find That Headline!” was held during morning assembly where teachers would read a sentence from an article and students had to find the headline as quickly as possible. On the same day, during the upper secondary assembly, representatives of each class guessed the names of movies from pictures, and participated in a game that was similar to “Don’t Forget the Lyrics”. After school, there was also a dialogue session with Mr Haresh Sharma, a renowned playwright. On 24 July, students guessed idioms from pictures while an anagram competition was held on 25 July. Last but not least, the debate finals for the Secondary 2 cohort was held on 29 July.

The Form Teachers sashayed onto the podium, dressed in recycled materials that were transformed into beautiful costumes that showcased each race. During recess, Library@Xinmin set up a Racial Harmony Day Traditional Games booth at the foyer, where the librarians engaged students by playing various multi-racial games. The students tried their hand at Chapteh, or had fun playing Congkak with a friend, while others played Zero Point. Overall, it was a day of colour and vibrancy, creating lots of memories for all.

n 13 July, Xinmin’s Student Council Investiture was held at the school hall. This was an important event organised every year to appoint the new executive committee of the Student Council as well as to officially recognise several trainees as student councillors after months of hard work doing duties and projects. The event was extremely grand with the invitation of the guest of honour, Mr Darren Tay, a former XMS student and the author of the bestselling book ‘Express to Impress’. Throughout the whole ceremony, there were several speeches made by both teachers and the President of the Student Council on what leadership means. The event ended with an interesting performance by the student councillors.

Drama Night he evening of 26 July was heated with excited discussions among students on what to wear for Drama Night. Every student attending the event that evening was looking forward to spending the start of their weekend with their friends as they watched two engaging plays specially put up by Xinmin’s English Drama Club. One of the plays was entitled “Bang! Bang! You’re dead” and the other was “The Giver”. Both plays were thought-provoking and filled with action. Throughout the plays, the audience was fully captivated and each was received with resounding applause. That evening was unforgettable for the audience and the performers.

National Day CelebrationsReported by: Jonathan Kwok (202)

August 2013 was a special occasion as Xinmin celebrated an important milestone in Singapore’s history, its 48th birthday and Hari Raya Puasa. The Guards of Honor contingent, consisting of SJAB, Girls’ Brigade, Boys’ Brigade, NPCC and NCC members presented a spectacular display. The Vice Principal delivered the Minister of Education’s speech, which reminded us of what Singapore went through as a nation, both in the past and recent crises which Singaporeans endured together. The rest of the day comprised interesting performances by the Symphonic Band, Muslim students and other groups, including the teachers! It was indeed a wonderful day for the entire school.

Teachers’ Day CelebrationsReported by: Asyraf (205)

ast Thursday, 5 September, was Xinmin Secondary School’s Teachers' Day Celebrations. It was a day filled with fun-filled activities and tears of joy. This year, the celebrations were exceptionally brilliant, thanks to the efforts of the Student Council, LAC members and all the others who contributed. The day started like any regular school day, but excitement was in the air as students were thinking about the class parties they were about to hold or the post-party celebrations in the hall. In the morning, some classes did last-minute preparations like attaching the balloons, preparing the food and drinks, and filling up pinatas! During morning assembly in the hall, Dr George Quek, Chairperson of the School Advisory Committee, delivered a speech on the importance of respecting and remembering our teachers. He also presented prizes to the seven winners of the Xtraordinary Staff Award. Next, the principal, Mrs Ong, presented the Drama Papa award, Miss Sunshine award, the 3 Cs award, and many others to the teachers. Congratulations to all the teachers who won the awards! After the awards presentation, the students went to the most fun-filled activity - the class party! Among the fun-filled games played by the classes were many icebreakers such as Whacko. There were also varieties of food like chicken nuggests and cake, and lots of drinks for the teachers and students to enjoy! After the party, the Secondary 1 and LAC students put up great performances in the hall. After the celebrations, some students went home but most of them returned to their primary schools to visit their beloved primary school teachers.
