CII SOUTHERN REGION CHAIRPERSON’S MESSAGE

Dear Member,

Greetings!

The Confederation of Indian Industry

– CII is the only Industry body in India

that has a dedicated initiative IWN with

a membership of 1525 professional

women across the 6 States in the

Southern Region, and a growing

membership across 12 States in India.

CII believes that the time has come

where women will play an equal and

productive role in nation building, both

as contributors to economic growth and

to building a healthy and vibrant society.

In this context, IWN works actively in

Educating, Engaging, Encouraging

and Empowering women, as the

4 essential tools in enhancing the

competitiveness and growth of

industries and economy.

Recent findings by one of the leading

consulting firms clearly highlights that

despite modest improvements created

in the ecosystem women still remain

under-represented at every level in the

corporate structure. In India, although

women have emerged significantly in

leadership roles in the Service sector,

we seem to have only a handful of

women CEO’s in other sectors. This

trend doesn’t appear to be rising and it

is appalling that the share of women in

leadership positions is below the

world average.

I am delighted that IWN is facilitating an

active network for creating gender parity

to assist women to face their challenges

with confidence and self-worth, and

encourage a healthy work-life balance!

The tangible and intangible impact

created by the various initiatives is of

immense value not only to women, but

also to the society at large.

I take this opportunity to applaud the

vision of our Past Chairman, CII SR,

Mr. G.V. Sanjay Reddy and the Founder

Chairwoman Mrs. Suchitra Ella, for their

tremendous commitment to building

IWN during the initial years, through

the active involvement of IWN office

bearers of the CII Southern Regional

Council and in the CII State Councils to

synergise efforts and make it inclusive in

the mainstream CII activities.

I congratulate Dr. R. Nandini and her

team for an eventful year under her

leadership and would like to place on

record the commendable work done

by the Secretariat headed by

Mrs. Madhu Vasanthy for the unique

initiatives undertaken and consistent

dedication resulting in IWN’s

phenomenal growth in the

Southern Region.

I congratulate Ms. Anu Sriram,

Chairwoman for 2016-17 and I pray that

IWN will become a National CII initiative

during the year.

Thank you,

Rajshree PathyChairperson, CII Southern Region & Chairman & Managing Director,Rajshree Sugars & Chemicals Ltd.

out to more women with an aim of inclusive growth and economic parity.

I take this opportunity to thank Ms. Rajshree Pathy, Chairperson, CII Southern Region for her unstinted support throughout the year. I thank Ms. Anu Sriram, Deputy Chairwoman, IWN Southern Region for her valuable support all year long. I would also like to thank all the Past Chairs of the Region and the States for their motivation and encouragement by participating in several IWN programmes. A special mention to all IWN State Chairwomen & Vice Chairwomen, Task Force Convenors & Co-Convenors, Zonal Convenor and Co-Convenor who have made my journey at IWN unforgettable.

Thank you,

R. NandiniChairwoman, IWN Southern Region & Managing Director, Chandra Textiles Pvt. Ltd.

Dear Member,

Greetings!

The status of women has improved markedly in the last decade. More and more women are entering the workforce, taking up the challenge of multitasking and prioritization, even managing to strike a work-life balance considering their various roles as a wife, a mother, and a professional. The progress achieved indeed is quite significant and worthy to be applauded.

However, women continue to be underrepresented in most businesses, especially at the senior levels. We still have a very long way to go. I believe, women need to and must determine their highest expectations from their professional life and work towards setting goals to achieve them.

It gives me immense pleasure in stating that CII’s Indian Women Network (IWN) has to a great extent been successful in providing its women members an all-inclusive platform for their professional development. IWN works towards enabling women become ace achievers in their respective fields of expertise. IWN’s prime focus is on Learning & Development, Health & Wellbeing and Policy & Advocacy Initiatives. By providing space to women professionals, students and

entrepreneurs to network, IWN opens up doors to great learning across sectors.

The year 2015-16, witnessed IWN starting on an extremely optimistic note with a group of very enthusiastic and dynamic members and office bearers. Under the Learning & Development Task Force, several need-based events focusing on women’s professional skill development and enhancement were conducted for the benefit of members across all southern region states of Tamil Nadu, Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala & Puducherry. Some of the key workshops that we organized were the ‘Prevention of Sexual Harassment Act at the Workplace’ (POSH) in partnership with Kochhar & Co. and Fox Mandal, the Internal Complaints Committee in partnership with Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas & Co. Also, we conducted a Special Safety Session for Women in partnership with Mahindra SSG across the southern states to spread awareness about one of the most relevant issues for women - their safety and security.

IWN recognizes the importance of nurturing women’s health and well-being in a holistic manner to bring about a ‘good work-life harmony. Due to this strong focus, I am happy to inform you

that we have had some very established hospitals as IWN Wellbeing partners in the southern states. For the year 2015-16, Apollo Hospitals has partnered with IWN Tamil Nadu and KIMS & LOTUS Hospitals have partnered with IWN Telangana. State IWN chapters have organized several health camps, blood donation camps, sessions on women’s health issues for the benefit of women. Besides these, webinars on health topics were also organized in partnership with State Well-being Partners wherein health experts interacted with members on varied themes.

In promoting international linkages, IWN office bearers from southern region participated in the International Conference on Gender Equality which was held from 12 to 14 November 2015 and also in the 4th Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) - India Industrial Forum on the 18th and 19th of November, 2015 at Jeddah.

I have had the privilege of participating in the CII Southern Regional Council meetings where I had requested council members to nominate women from their organizations to the IWN membership. I would like to take this opportunity to thank the council members for their support. IWN will continue to make earnest efforts to scale up and reach

IWN WESTERN REGION

our ‘100 hours of change’ program has touched over 15,000 young women across the Western Region.

The second challenge we face as women is the fact that we often don’t focus enough on ourselves. Balancing work life and home leaves very little room for anything else. To help women and enable them to take the right decisions we have used technology to create different modules of webinars led by different chapters of the IWN Western Region.

Our third focus area has been creating a platform for women to gain confidence

A step in timeThis month marks an important milestone for us at the Western Region Chapter of the Indian Women’s Network. As the world celebrates International Women’s Day, we complete two years of a wonderful journey. In 2014, we came together to lay out the agenda for what we could do to help women in the work place. The answer was a lot! But it was important to identify key focus areas. Given our goal, we decided to focus on three very critical challenges.

The first is the fact that the biggest challenge in India is not that there aren’t enough women at the ‘Top’, across companies. Nearly 50% of women fall off the work force between the junior to middle management levels across the board and the reasons are manifold. To address this ‘Leaky Pipeline’ we at IWN decided to use our platform to create a first of its kind mentoring network for students and young professionals where senior corporate members from IWN to explain to students the importance of career planning. We are happy to say that over the course of the last 2 years,

and develop themselves as leaders. For this, we have tied with global consulting firm to develop a series of sessions to help women get Board-ready. We have also conducted a series of leadership-focused webinars and discussions to put the spotlight on the challenges women face & insights women leaders can share.

At a personal level, I must say that I have learnt a lot from IWN’s journey so far. The network has allowed me to meet and learn from some amazing and inspirational women. It has also made me believe that we can do wonders when we come together! It is said that a journey of a 100 miles starts with a single step and while we have taken more than a few - we look forward to the rest. After all India is changing and women are increasingly driving this change!

Warm regards,

Mini Menon Chairperson, Indian Women Network Western Region & Executive Editor, Bloomberg TV India

MESSAGES FROM IWN MEMBERS

IWN is a great platform for women professionals, executives and entrepreneurs to build relationships, to learn and to grow - through exchange of ideas relevant to business and to the workplace. This network also enables the more experienced professionals to mentor and share their knowledge and experiences with others who could benefit from it.

Ms. Kashmira Mewawala Maharashtra

My belief that the diverse skills and ideas women bring to corporate boards and executive ranks can play a key role in business success has been strongly demonstrated by IWN throughout the network’s journey since its inception. The various facets that the network is showcasing by tapping into the wisdom of the women community on all topics personal & professional are truly appreciable.

As they say, a rising tide lifts all boats! IWN provides the opportunity for us to help lift each other – by sharing ideas, experiences, learnings, and building a community of support.

Ms. Swapna Sree Medikonda Telangana

As a council member of IWN, I have gained immensely in terms of being able to connect and network with prominent personalities, exchange ideas and contribute to the betterment of organization, students, community and society at large. It has been extremely enriching to be part of a dedicated team working with a purpose under the leadership of Dr. R. Nandini.

Dr.Githa Heggde Karnataka

IWN has been a powerful tool in propelling women to ride faster, stronger and higher. Right from creating policies that enhance the performance of women, to the matters that pertain to their heart and soul (health and well bring), IWN is a strong force in enriching women in building successful careers, happy workplaces, better societies and economies. IWN is sure to build a prosperous India with women power. IWN is like an inspiring acronym by a woman, stating “I Win!”

Ms. Maithri Srikanth Kerala

Women should acknowledge themselves for the strength they already have. She need not compare and compete with men; she is unique & different and right in her own way.

Ms. Roopa Vishwanath Kubasad Goa

IWN has given me a platform for personal and professional self-actualization. The synergies are tremendous and the possibilities for pro-women advocacy are immense. Here is where I find my voice, my dreams and avenues for development. Thank you IWN!

Ms. Nelbymol Raymond Daimari Kerala

IWN – I Win in my life excites me

» for the networking it brings

» for exchanging new perspectives

» for a bolder & confident me

» for reaching out to the unreached

» for making me understand that being a women is a PRIVILEGE, PRIDE , POWER

Let it spread wings to Recognize, Reward and Respect HER.

Ms. A. Bharathy Puducherry

I have recently joined IWN and have had the privilege of attending some of the programmes it had offered. The last one I was a part of, was the entrepreneurship boot camp which was very impressive and helpful. I got to network with a lot of fellow entrepreneurs and learnt about current trends of entrepreneurship especially start ups.

Ms. Satya. B Andhra Pradesh

IWN to me is a mission to take forward the message and spread awareness to all the women from all walks of life, that together we can and we will make the difference in every field.

Ms. Madhubala Delhi

As a member of IWN, I would like to say that IWN is really a breath of fresh air. I have had an opportunity to meet other women colleagues in various positions and walks of life, including the Faculty and I have had opportunities to listen to many other perspectives as well, which enriches my learning. There is professionalism, but would hasten to add, that it should be sustained and be incremental so that there is scope to continuously increase the bench mark.

Ms. Florence MacDonald Tamilnadu

By virtue of being an IWN member, I have had several benefits such as networking with women from various walks of life and the learnings I have had from various sessions on health, education, laws etc.

Ms. Jeyabharathi Tamilnadu

Entrepreneurship is a lonely journey, so was mine. However, once I got associated with IWN, the journey became interesting. IWN provided me a platform to network with other women entrepreneurs, interact with them and share views and ideas. Associating with a division of CII, gave more credibility to Blue Caterpillars and we were taken more seriously.

Apart from this, it was a humanitarian and philanthropic satisfaction to work for welfare and upliftment of other women.

Ms. Sneha Jain Madhya Pradesh

Whenever IWN gets together, issues get solutions to make communities better. That’s because it just does not only help women to know their identity but it empowers them in their own communities and around the nation.
