THE GIFT OF WONDERCreative Practices for Delighting in God

Can you imagine a God who dances with shouts of joy, laughs when you laugh, loves to play, enjoys life, and invites us to join the fun?

Christine Sine had spent many years with an image of God who was “a very serious, workaholic type of God.” And even when her theology told her this was not true, she struggled to live into this new way of thinking. What she needed was a childlike spirituality.

This book invites us to pay attention to childlike characteristics that have the power to reshape us. Each chapter addresses a characteristic to embrace, including delight, playfulness, imagination, awe and wonder, love of nature, the ability to live in the present, and more. Fresh spiritual practices that engage all our senses help us live a new spiritual life that embraces the wonder and joy that God intends for us.

What if our memories are like shells we gather on a beach?

According to pastor and spiritual director Casey Tygrett, how we hold and carry our memories—good and bad—is a part of what forms us spiritually. In this way we have a common bond with the people

of Scripture who also had a sensory life, gathering shells and trying to make sense of them.

In these pages Casey Tygrett explores the power of memory and offers biblical texts and practices to guide us in bringing our memories to God for spiritual transformation.

After hearing from women around the world who were transformed by using the Sensible Shoes Study Guide with their small groups, author Sharon Garlough Brown has written new study guides for each of the remaining three books in the series.

These study guides are practical resources to help you process the characters’ stories and explore each of the novel’s spiritual formation themes more deeply. You’ll find eight or twelve weeks of daily Scrip-ture readings, reflection questions, and invitations to prayer, with weekly discussion questions and practices for groups to do together. Each week also features a list of spiritual disciplines used by the characters that you can incorporate into your own life with God.

Individually or with a group, as you walk with the women of Sensible Shoes on holy ground, you’ll be invited to encounter God in significant new ways.

LEARNING FROM HENRI NOUWEN AND VINCENT VAN GOGHA Portrait of the Compassionate Life

Carol Berry and her husband met and befriended Henri Nouwen when she sat in his course on compassion at Yale Divinity School in the 1970s. At the request of Nouwen’s literary estate, she has written this book, which includes unpublished material recorded from Nouwen’s lectures.

As an art educator, Berry is uniquely situated to develop Nouwen’s work on Vincent van Gogh and to

add her own research. She fills in background on the much misunderstood spiritual context of van Gogh’s work, and reinterprets van Gogh’s art (presented here in full color) in light of Nouwen’s lectures. Berry also brings in her own experience in ministry, sharing how Nouwen and van Gogh, each in his own way, led her to the richness and beauty of the compassionate life.

J A K E M E A D O R is vice president of the Davenant Institute and the editor in chief of Mere Orthodoxy, an online magazine covering the Christian faith in the public sphere. He lives with his wife and children in his hometown of Lincoln, Nebraska.

Common life in our society is in decline. Our communities are disintegrating, our public discourse is polarized and hateful, ethnic minorities face systemic injustices, and economic inequalities are widening.

Jake Meador diagnoses our society’s decline as the failure of a particular story we’ve told about ourselves: the story of modern liberalism. He shows us how that story has led to our collective loss of meaning, wonder,

and good work, and then recovers each of these by grounding them in a different story—a story rooted in the deep tradition of the Christian faith.

This book reclaims a vision of common life for our fractured times: a vision that doesn’t depend on the destinies of our economies or our political institutions, but on our citizenship in a heavenly city.

Belinda Bauman was living a comfortable life as a wife, mother, and nonprofit leader—but her soul was checked out. Then she met Esperance. An assault survivor living in one of the poorest, most dangerous countries in the world, Esperance and other Congolese women shared their harrowing stories with Belinda. Their vulnerability set Belinda on a path of embracing empathy. If Esperance could love in the face of so much pain, maybe there is hope for the world too.

From the top of Mount Kilimanjaro to the borders of war-torn Syria, Belinda takes readers along her journey to true empathy. With cutting-edge neuroscience, biblical parables, and stories of brave women from across the globe, she offers readers direction for seeing others’ perspectives, listening well, and redeeming conflict. She casts a vision for lives and communities transformed by everyday Christians practicing empathy as a spiritual discipline.

BELINDA BAUMAN is the founder of One Million Thumbprints, a movement of peacemakers advocating with women in the world’s worst conflict zones. She is also the founder of and the visionary behind #SilenceIsNotSpiritual, a campaign calling churches to break the silence on violence against women.

Belinda is a speaker and contributor to Newsweek’s The Daily Beast, Red Tent Living, Huffington Post, and Christianity Today. She completed a masters in curriculum development at Covenant College and a certificate in lay trauma counseling from the Seattle School of Theology. “In an age where it is easy to think of ourselves as socially aware and compassionate, but where studies show we are swiftly losing our empathy and growing ever-more distant

from one another, this book is a beautiful and passionate call back to becoming fully human, learning to listen to one another’s stories, and being willing to risk the loss of

comfort to live in solidarity with others. I can’t recommend it highly enough.”

BISAC RELIGION / CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY / APOLOGETICS

While there are certainties in Christian faith, at the heart of the Christian story is also paradox. With signature candor and depth, Jen Pollock Michel helps readers imagine a Christian faith open to mystery. Jesus invites us to abandon the polarities of either and or in order to embrace the difficult, wondrous dissonance of and.

With personal stories and reflection on Scripture, literature, and culture, Michel takes us deeper into mystery and worship of the One who is Mystery and Love. Each of the paradoxical themes about Christian faith she covers give us certainty about God while also leading us into greater curiosity about his nature and activity in the world.

The modern world is a machine of a thousand invisible habits, forming us into anxious, busy, and depressed people. We yearn for the freedom and peace of the gospel, but remain addicted to our technology, shackled by our screens, and exhausted by our routines.

The answer to our contemporary chaos is to practice a rule of life that aligns our habits to our beliefs. The Common Rule offers four daily and four weekly habits

designed to help us create new routines and transform frazzled days into lives of love for God and neighbor. Justin Earley provides concrete, doable habits, such as a daily hour of phoneless presence or a weekly conversation with a friend.

As you embark on these life-giving practices, you will find the freedom and rest for your soul that comes from aligning belief in Jesus with the practices of Jesus.

TAKING IT TO THE STREETSLessons from a Life of Urban Ministry

Known around Oakland, California, as “OG Rev.,” Reverend Harry Williams’s calling is to the streets: to the hungry, homeless, addicted, incarcerated, and vulnerable. In this book he invites us into his world, taking on racism, the plight of children in the inner city, gentrification, urban violence, the prosperity gospel, and more from an inside perspective.

Whether we ourselves are from the city or not, we need a deep understanding of its social, political, and spiritual realities if we’re to minister effectively. Taking It to the Streets offers firsthand accounts of urban life alongside large-scale considerations of its systemic challenges, meant to inspire and equip a new generation of ministers to our cities.

BISAC RELIGION / CHRISTIAN LIFE / PERSONAL GROWTH

Life is full of questions: questions about our identity, our relationships, our faith. Sometimes it seems like there are no easy answers. But grappling with hard questions can lead us to form deeper faith commitments and discern who we are called to become.

Jeffrey Keuss says that asking good questions helps us to lead good lives. He takes us on a tour of Scripture to

find insights from people who asked questions of God and others. From God asking Adam and Eve, “Where are you?” to the Samaritan woman asking Jesus for water, Live the Questions explores critical questions in Scripture and what they can teach us about doubt, faith, and uncertainty in our everyday lives.

BECOMING A JUST CHURCHCultivating Communities of God’s Shalom

Many local churches don’t know what to do about justice. We tend to compartmentalize it as merely a strategy for outreach, and we often outsource it to parachurch justice ministries.

Adam Gustine calls the local church to be just and do justice. He provides a theological vision for our identity as a just people, where God’s character and the pursuit of shalom infuses every aspect of our

congregational DNA. As we grow in becoming just, the church becomes a prophetic alternative to the broken systems of the world and a parable of God’s intentions for human flourishing and societal transformation.

This renewed vision for the church leads us into culti-vating a just life together—in community, discipleship, worship, and more—extending justice out into the world in concrete ways.

B I SAC BIBLES / OTHER TRANSLATIONS / TEXT

Most Bible translations bend the text toward us. They make the rough places smooth, the odd bits more palatable to our modern sensibilities. In every

translation something is gained and something lost.

The First Testament is an invitation to read the sacred text through the eyes of one of the most accomplished Old Testament scholars in the English-speaking world today. Translating the Hebrew text consistently, word–by–word, allows the language of Zion to come to us unbaptized in pious religiosity.

Consider these sample passages:

A N E W T R A N S L A T I O N O F T H E O L D T E S T A M E N T

f r o m J O H N G O L D I N G A Y

“Yahweh said to Abram, ‘Get yourself from your country, from your homeland, and from your father’s household, to the country that I shall enable you to see, and I shall make you into a big nation. I shall bless you and make your name big and you’ll become a blessing’ ” (Genesis 12:1-2).

“My shepherd being Yahweh, I don’t lack; he enables me to lie down in grassy pastures. He leads me to settled water; he turns my life back” (Psalm 23:1-3).

Who was Priscilla? Readers of the Bible may know her as the wife of Aquila, Paul’s coworker, or someone who explained God to Apollos. Biblical references to Priscilla spark questions: Why is she mentioned before her husband? Does the mention of her instruction of Apollos mean that women taught in the church? What is her story?

In this work of historical fiction, Priscilla looks back on her long life and remembers the ways she has participated in the early church. Ben Witherington combines biblical scholarship and winsome storytelling to give readers a vivid picture of an important New Testament woman.

Sometime around 56 AD, the apostle Paul wrote to the church in Rome. He entrusted this letter to Phoebe, whom he describes as the deacon of the church at Cenchreae and a patron of many. But who was this remarkable woman?

Biblical scholar and popular speaker Paula Gooder imagines Phoebe’s story—who she was, the life she lived, and her first-century faith—and in doing so opens up Paul’s world, giving a sense of the cultural and historical pressures that shaped his thinking and the faith of the early church. After the narrative, Gooder includes an extensive notes section with comments on the historical context, biographical details, cultural practices, and more.

Patronage—a reciprocal relationship between social unequals—is a central part of global cultures and the biblical story of God’s mission, yet many Westerners misunderstand or ignore this concept. If we ignore patronage in biblical cultures, we will misinterpret Yahweh’s relationship with Israel and miss some of the meaning in Jesus’ parables and Paul’s letters.

In this resource for ministry practitioners and lay Christians alike, Jayson Georges brings his crosscultural experience and biblical insights to bear on the topic of patronage, with sections on cultural issues, biblical models, theological concepts, and missional implications.

What is ethics? Ethics is not merely about tricky situations or hot topics. Instead, ethics asks questions about what sort of people we are, how we think, what sort of things we do and don’t do, and how we ought to live our everyday lives. How might we learn ethics from the Old Testament?

Trusted guide John Goldingay urges us to let the Old Testament itself set the agenda. Some people find the Old Testament to be confusing, out-of-date, and essentially replaced by the New Testament. But the Old Testament offers us a grand narrative that reveals God’s work, God’s purposes, and God’s wisdom.

Using seven key sentences drawn straight from the Old Testament, Christopher J. H. Wright fits the pieces together, shows us the coherent whole, and points us toward Jesus. This short survey shows God’s faith-fulness and love for his people and illuminates how the Old Testament Scriptures prepared for the identity and mission of Jesus.

“Red beef and strong beer” was how C. S. Lewis described his education under one of his early tutors. In other words, it was a substantial education that engaged deeply with the intellectual tradition and challenged him to grow.

Engaging the writings of C. S. Lewis, Gary Selby contends that spiritual formation comes about not by retreating from the physical world but through deeper engagement with it. By considering themes such as our human embodiment, our sense of awareness in our everyday experiences, and the role of our human agency, Selby demonstrates that an earthy spirituality can be a robust spirituality.

The Christian faith depends to a great degree on persuasion. Yet rhetoric—the art of persuasion—has been largely ignored by most Christians.

James Beitler seeks to renew interest in and hunger for an effective Christian rhetoric by closely considering the work of five beloved Christian communicators: C. S. Lewis, Dorothy L. Sayers, Dietrich Bonhoeffer, Desmond Tutu, and Marilynne Robinson. These writers collectively demonstrate that being a master of rhetoric is not antithetical to authentic Christian witness. Indeed, being a faithful disciple of Christ means practicing a rhetoric that beneficially and persuasively imparts the surprising truth of the gospel.

How can pastors thrive amid the demands of being preacher, therapist, administrator, and CEO? What is needed is a contemporary pastoral rule: a pattern for ministry that both encourages pastors and enables them to focus on what is most important in their pastoral task.

This book, coauthored by three experts with decades of experience, explains how relying on a pastoral rule has functioned throughout the church’s history and in the lives and work of figures such as Augustine, Calvin, Wesley, and Bonhoeffer. It also provides concrete advice on how pastors can develop and keep a rule that will help both them and their congregations to flourish.

The Protestant Reformers’ understanding of the Christian faith and the church was transformed by their encounter with Scripture.

These essays bring together the reflections of church historians and theologians originally delivered at Trinity Evangelical Divinity School on the occasion of the 500th anniversary of the Reformation. As they consider historical, hermeneutical, theological, and practical issues regarding the Bible, these essays reveal that the irrepressible Word of God continues to transform hearts and minds.

How can a loving God also be a God of wrath? Kevin Kinghorn and Stephen Travis offer a way forward beyond pat answers and devotional platitudes.

Using a philosophically informed line of argument and a careful study of the relevant biblical texts, Kinghorn and Travis show how these two aspects of God’s character can be reconciled. Often God’s wrath is viewed as an expression of holiness or justice, with the implicit assumption that God’s just response to people is incompatible with a loving response. The authors instead view God’s love as a strictly essential divine attribute, with justice as a derivative of love.

R O B E R T T R A C Y M cK E N Z I E is Arthur F. Holmes Chair of Faith and Learning and professor and chair of the department of history at Wheaton College. He is the author of books including One South or Many?, Lincolnites and Rebels, and The First Thanksgiving: What the Real Story Tells Us About Loving God and Learning from History.

Many people think of history as merely “the past”—or at most, information about the past. But the real work of a historian is to listen to the voices of those who have gone before and humbly remember the flesh and blood on the other side of the evidence. What is their story? How does it become part of our own?

In A Little Book for New Historians veteran historian Robert Tracy McKenzie offers a concise, clear, and

beautifully written introduction to the study of history. In addition to making a case for the discipline in our pragmatic, “present-tense” culture, McKenzie lays out necessary skills, methods, and attitudes for historians in training. Loaded with concrete examples and insightful principles, this primer shows how the study of history, faithfully pursued, can shape your heart as well as your mind.

It explains clearly what historians do, how historical study can promote the right kind of intellectual discipline, and why history means so much for Christian faith. The book is as powerfully effective as it is accessibly succinct.”

BISAC RELIGION / CHRISTIAN THEOLOGY / CHRISTOLOGY

Christians usually focus on what Jesus has done (his life, death, and resurrection) and what he will do (his second coming and reign). However, Christ is the one who not only lived, died, rose, and will come again: he is also currently seated at God’s right hand. In this NSBT volume, Peter Orr explores the New Testament witness to Jesus as he is now, the exalted Christ, through the lenses of his identity, his location, and his activity.

PETER ORR is lecturer in New Testament at Moore College in Sydney, Australia. He is the author of Christ Absent and Present: A Study in Pauline Christology.

The Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture (ACCS) is a unique series encompassing all of Scripture and offering contemporary readers the opportunity to study for themselves the key writings of the early church fathers.

Arranged by the books of the Bible, each portion of commentary allows the living voices of the church in its formative centuries to speak as they engage the sacred page of Scripture, rendered throughout the series in English in the ecumenically accepted Revised Standard Version of the Bible. Listen in as leading pastoral theologians of six centuries gather around the text of Scripture and offer their best theological, spiritual, and pastoral insights.

Now in paperback for the first time, this complete series from general editor Thomas C. Oden includes an additional companion volume featuring biographical sketches, a com-prehensive timeline, master indexes of Scripture references and authors, and more.

T H O M A S C . O D E N (1931–2016) was a pioneering theologian and served as the architect and general editor for the Ancient Christian Commentary on Scripture. He was also the general editor of the Ancient Christian Doctrine series and the Ancient Christian devotionals, as well as a consulting editor for the Encyclopedia of Ancient Christianity.

A prolific writer and seasoned teacher, Oden also served as the director of the Center for Early African Christianity at Eastern University in Pennsylvania, and was active in the Confessing Movement in America, particularly within the United Methodist Church.

“The Ancient Christian Commentary series is a marvelous tool for the recovery of biblical wisdom in today’s church. Not just another scholarly project, the ACCS

is a major source for the renewal of preaching, theology, and Christian devotion.”

T I M O T H Y G E O R G E , Beeson Divinity School

"This new, but old, commentary takes us out of the small, closed-minded world in which

much modern biblical scholarship is done into an earlier time marked by a Christian seriousness,

by robust inquiry, and by believing faith.”

D A V I D F . W E L L S , Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary

“For the ongoing ecumenical conversation, and the accurate appreciation of early Christian thought,

and the current hermeneutical debate as well, the Ancient Christian Commentary will prove itself to be

a really indispensable resource.”

“Chronological snobbery—the assumption that our ancestors working without benefit of

computers have nothing to teach us—is exposed as nonsense by this magnificent series."

BISAC RELIGION / PRAYER

“The journeys, struggles and insights of two great spiritual pilgrims—Ignatius Loyola and Mary Ward—are skillfully woven together here to invite today’s pilgrims into their own Ignatian adventure.”

MARGARET SILF, author and spiritual explorer

“I highly recommend this book if you are hungry and seeking to encounter and discover God in a deeper way.”

IAN MOBSBY, Anglican priest, writer, speaker

“If you are looking for insightful and encouraging spiritual reading for Lent (or any other time), you have found your book!”

KEVIN O'BRIEN, SJ, author of The Ignatian Adventure

P R A I S E F O R T H E B O O K

A deep prayer life is not just something for mystics or religious specialists. It’s for everyone, and everyone has a capacity for it.

This is a popular introduction to prayer and the spiritual life—a guide for Lent and the rest of the year—in the tradition of Ignatius Loyola. Simmonds also explores Ignatian influence on the life of the seventeenth-century Yorkshire woman Mary Ward.

The Ignatian tradition is hugely adaptable to different approaches. At its heart is personal encounter with Jesus, helping people to pray with the Scriptures in an imaginative way.

This book includes questions to aid reflection and discussion at the end of each chapter, and also looks at the way in which the Passion and resurrection of Jesus are woven into the patterns of human life.

Global in scope, but focusing right down on the role of ordinary people in conflict and violence, Reconciliation explores both the positives of multiculturalism and the challenges of accepting difference. This book issues a vibrant call to the church to maintain and strengthen relationships locally, among members, clergy, and laity; to cross borders to build relationships between different denominations; and to maintain open attitudes toward our neighbors from other religions and ideologies.

Forty biblically based meditations, with reflection questions, are offered for use at weekly gatherings or for everyday devotion during Lent, on topics including impediments to reconciliation, risking the self, humility, and radical openness to the other.

“Jesus was a pest to the Romans and a threat to the religious leadership, so they hung him out like so much refuse. Little did they realize that it was like trying to put out a fire with fuel. The whole world exploded.”

With characteristic style, John Pritchard takes us on pilgrimage to the Holy Land, as he unpacks the five great events that made Christianity—Christmas, Good Friday, Easter, Ascension, and Pentecost. We explore: “What happened?” “What did it mean?” “What does it mean for us?”

Absorbing, immediate, and full of stories, this volume offers deeply considered theology, brilliantly communicated to connect with life as we actually experience it.

But is it belief in God that motivates these evils? The author’s investigation of these questions will encourage both believers and unbelievers to discard the lazy thinking and easy assumptions that so often disfigure the arguments on either side of this debate.
