A little bit of Christmas cheer from the Treasurer
We are making meetings cheaper for you next year.
Ever mindful of the financial pressures many of you are suffering and the
difficulty some are having in finding the price of a Morris Ring Meeting,
we’ve decided to offer each national meeting a contribution towards its
fixed costs. Initially we were only going to do this for the ARM in order to
encourage more of you to come, enjoy the weekend and participate in our
annual meeting. You’ll see that the price of this year’s ARM has been cut
from £79 to £73 as the cost of the venue will now be paid for out of central
funds. However we’ve decided not to stop there but to make a similar offer
to the host sides of the 2013 national meetings. This will enable hosts to
cut around £5 from the attendance price.
So far so good you say – when did the Treasurer ever give anything away –
where’s the catch? Well normally hosted meetings are designed to break-
even, with the Morris Ring covering the cost of any unforeseen disaster or
receiving the benefit of the weekend’s collection. What we would like to do,
for an experimental period this coming year, is to ask you all to do your bit
to ensure that the collection is as good as can be so that we can recoup the
cost of the subsidy . Engage with the crowd and make sure nobody misses
out on the opportunity to join in with the luck of the Morris by putting

something in the hat; that way the great general public will help pay for part
of your ticket.
Hartley collected nearly £800 at their meeting this year and I’ve heard of
others seeking to beat that in 2013. If it all works out well, by this time
next year, we’ll review the subsidy and continue keeping down the cost of
your attendance at hosted meetings.
Morris Ring Membership Renewals
A small number of sides have yet to renew their membership subscription to
the Morris Ring for 2012/13. Should your side find that its subscription is
still outstanding and you wish your side to remain members of the Morris
Ring and enjoy the Public Liability insurance which comes with membership,
then please complete your renewal form and send it with your subscription at
the post 30th November rate to the MR Treasurer me.
If you do not have a form, please e-mail the Treasurer and he will send you
another. If you would like to avoid this problem next year and save your club
£10 then set up a Bank Standing Order to: The Morris Ring HSBC 40-41-44 31276018.
Please reference it with your side’s name.
If your side does not wish to renew its membership for any reason or is
having difficulties doing so then please let the Treasurer know.
Children in Need: The Joint Morris Organisations Appeal
I’m pleased to report that the current balance of the JMO
account is £6,945.52 (up to 18th December 2012) and Morris Ring sides are
well represented. Top of the list is Leicester with £530 followed closely by
Wessex with £485 but Harthill is threatening to beat both these figures
over the festive season with the collection from their Mummers play. Plans
are afoot to make a publicity splash in the New Year after any other
seasonal donations are received.

2013 Meetings under the auspices of the Morris Ring
Please remember that for 2013, with the onus being with the host sides and
with two overseas meetings, application to attend any of these events needs
to be made directly to the host side.
Please copy the Morris Ring bagman ([email protected]) into applications - simply so that the officers of the MR have some idea of who is
going where.
A reminder of what is on:
Jigs Instructional January 18th – 20th 2013
The Jigs Instructional endeavours to inspire the confidence and
ability to dance Cotswold Morris Jigs by giving a good basic
grounding followed by detailed instruction. There are parallel
streams simultaneously, one for the relative novice and the other for the
experienced dancer, plus some sessions for beginners covering the basics of
the Cotswold dance.
The traditions will be Bampton, Bledington, Fieldtown, and Sherborne, on the
Saturday, with selected jigs from other traditions being worked on during
Friday evening and Sunday morning.
Cost £44 per man, discounted for Ring Member club delegates who are
attending for the first time (£10) or who attended for the first time last
year (£5). The Ring Treasurer will send the appropriate subsidy to your club
for those eligible after the event.
For your money you will receive indoor camping, including showers, food from
Friday supper to Sunday lunch, beer for the Feast, instruction, good
company, and a pub that's never heard of closing time. The event is open to the other Morris organisations but restricted to male dancers. We accept dancers at all levels from beginners to advanced.

Both are a short walk from either the village hall
or the camp site.
On Saturday, there will be two bus tours visiting
the surrounding area with pubs and venues we
hope you will enjoy.
There will be a church service on Sunday with
dancing in the church, followed by a short display in the church yard. (There will be a suitable alternative for those who do not wish to attend the Church Service). The dancers will then process through Sutton Bonington to the
Kings Head, the site for the massed dancing and lunch. Dolphin will be
inviting local non-Ring sides to this part of the weekend and some will include
women dancers and musicians.
Additional day places for young dancers
Dolphin Morris Men particularly want to encourage young dancers to enjoy
some of the celebrations, but acknowledge that they may not wish to attend
the whole weekend. Therefore, if there are sufficient numbers, we would
like to offer a day option for young dancers to travel with the tours on

It has been another busy year and there is a great deal of information in
this final Newsletter of 2012. Please share it with the members of your side
and let me have some feedback, including if you would be happy to only receive it in electronic form.
On behalf of my fellow Officers of the Morris Ring I would like to thank you
for your friendship and support over the past year and wish you joy in all
that you do in 2013 – especially if it involves you supporting the ARM and or
one of the other ‘Morris Ring’ events.
