PUBLIC SEMINAR

Migrati oh, Documentati on,and Humanisati on of Rohingya

RESTLESS BEINGS

Restless Beings is o gathering of restless individuals who arepossionate about human rights in an organisation founded onthe desire to work towards egolitorianism from the roots up.They work with the most marginalised and persecutedcommunities across the world; the underdogs of society whoseplights often brushed under the carpet by mainstreom mediaond the masses.

On !7 ApriL 20!7, the Centre forCivitisational Diatogue wetcomed the Co-Founders and Co-Directors of ResttessBeings to deliver a tatl< on Migration,Documentation and Humanisation ofRohingya. The seminar began at 10am andtool< place at the Auditorium of Institute ofPostgraduate Studies, University of Ma[aya.Mr. Mabrur Ahmed and Mrs. Rahima Begumdetivered the taU< which was attended bylecturers, and mostty postgraduate students.According to Restless Beings, the Rohingyasare one of the most persecuted communitiesin the world. Despite having lived in the stateof Aral<an (which is part of Burma) since the8th century, they were not recognised ascitizens of The Union of Burma sincethecoupd'etat by General Ne Win in L962.The Rohingyas have migrated to countries[il<e Bangtadesh, Mataysia, lndia, Thaitand,Saudi Arabia and lndonesia. Howevelaccording to Mr. Mabrur; these refugees arenot registered, wfrlctr means they have nodocu mentation to prove thei r citizenshi p andorigins, and that [imits their right to live as anormal human being. Mr. Mabrur explainedthat some refugees, for instance, somepregnant women tool< the risl< of gettingcaught and jaited if they want their newbornto be registered. The seminar receivedinteresting feedbacl<s and audiences wereengaged with the taU<. One of the audienceswho attended the seminar was once a

refugee for 15 years from South Sudan. Heshared his experiences which moved theaudience and just reflects the hope there isin seeing a better world. One of thepa rtici pa nts raised a n i nteresti ng a nd eq ua [[yimportant question, why is this happening?Mr. Mabrur and Mrs. Rahima explained thatthis is a[[ because of the greedygovernmentswho wantto exploitthe naturaI resourcesthatis sitting under the Rohingya community.Towards the end of the seminal Mr. Mabrurshared Restless Beings responses towardsthis crisis, and Mrs. Rahima encouraged us toparticipate in this movement and contributeto the cause as a university students.
