Iuppiter’s abilities.Iuppiter was the Father of the Gods. He was claimed to be the God of the Sky. When Rome was a more agricultural city he was thought to be God of the Sun, and Moon. When Rome started to become a more military based city he was thought to be a defender of the City.

Iuppiter had a few symbols and was usually depicted holding a lightning bolt. He is usually seen with an eagle, and it is often sculpted as an old man.

Iuppiter was the son of Ops, the earth mother and Saturn, the prevailing sky god.

A story about Iuppiter Tarquinius the Elder

When approaching Rome (where Tarquin was heading to try his luck in politics after unsuccessful attempts in his native Tarquinii), an eagle swooped down, removed his hat, flew screaming in circles, replaced the hat on his head and flew away.

IUPPITER TOOK MY HAT!!!!

Tarquinius continued

Tarquin's wife Tanaquil interpreted this as a sign that he would become king based on the bird, the quadrant of the sky from which it came, the god who had sent it and the fact it touched his hat (an item of clothing placed on a man's most noble part, the head)

July 5, Poplifugia, festival in honor of Iuppiter

September 4 to 19, Ludi Romani, games for the people of Rome to the honor of Iuppiter, organized by the curule aedile (since 366 BC)

The ides are sacred to Iuppiter and are celebrated.
