What is IUCN?

• Founded in 1948 as the world’s first global environmental organization.

• Headquartered in Switzerland

• Today the largest professional global conservation network

• A leading authority on the environment and sustainable development

• More than 1,200 member organizations including • 200+ government• 900+ non-government organizations

• Almost 11,000 voluntary scientists and experts, grouped in six commissions in some 160 countries

What is the World Conservation Congress?

• The largest conservation event in the world

• Held every 4 years in Switzerland or in another State that agrees to host the WCC

• Its functions (among others):

to provide a public forum for debate on how best to conserve nature and to ensure an equitable and ecologically sustainable use of natural resources

as an opportunity to meet and interact with fellow conservationists from across the globe

to present and discuss among those who are on the cutting edge of conservation.

Inspire

The Congress will inspire the international community to take action for nature by demonstrating its critical role as our life support system and by showcasing inspiring examples, from Hawai‘i and the rest of the world, where conservation has delivered tangible benefits for biological diversity, people and sustainable development.

Strengthen and Mobilize the Union

The Congress will bring together all IUCN Members to consolidate and advance the Union’s policy to address urgent issues of our time, agree on new priorities and actions for the global conservation community from 2017 to 2020 and involve all IUCN constituencies and partners to jointly drive the necessary implementation.

The Congress will launch a set of new responses to ensure the most efficient, effective and sustained scaling-up of action on existing global biodiversity and sustainable development targets to date.
