In a recent NBC News feature, it was pointed out that we Americans are “hooked” on the use of technology.

For example:

Only a few years ago the number of homes equipped with microwave ovens represented only 8%. Today this number has risen to about 93%.

In about the same number of years, personal computers went from being virtually nonexistent….. Now 50% of all homes in the U.S. are equipped with them.

The problems, like those experienced in California, will continue to challenge the entire country…

….Is there an answer to this problem?

..Most experts say there is, but it is not going to be a single one-step process. The answer is going to be achieved by several areas of advanced technology.

Things like:

Finding alternative fuels to power generators…

Making use of such technological advancement as fuel cells, wind and solar generation…

And most importantly, making use of electric power as efficiently as possible!

An interesting survey was conducted by the Federal Government… In this study is was discovered that the power consumed by AC induction motors, in industry alone, represents about 23% of the total electricity generated by this country.

Additional studies have concluded that nearly 60% of all electricity generated is consumed by AC induction motors, combining both, the commercial and the private sector.

Most electric motors waste energy. The degree of wasted electricity depends on how well the motor is matched to the work load it must perform.

In general, electric motors are engineered larger than need be for the job they will perform.

This is done to prevent over-loading conditions that would will simply burn the motor out.

In an effort to protect motors from over-loading, they are designed to generate more horse power than needed, to perform a specific work load.

In addition, the work-load often changes during the course of operation, yet the same horse power is delivered whether required, or not.

The very fact that a motor does not respond to varying changes in horse power requirements, renders the motor less than efficient.

Let’s first consider the value of the SOFT –START feature.

Electric motors are designed with a certain degree of simplicity. The only moving part is the “rotor”; generally, a cylindrical shaped part that is attached to the spindle or shaft that projects out of the motor housing. This spindle is the connection that delivers power to machinery.

In order to cause the rotor to begin to turn, a great deal of electricity is supplied to the stator, the stator creates the electromagnetic field which brings to bear a pushing and pulling effect on the rotor, causing it to turn.

Typically, an electric motor draws from 5 to 10 times the amount of current when starting as compared to the current drawn at full speed.

Power companies must supply this surge, or “in-rush current” to facilitate motor start up demands.

By multiplying the number of air conditioning units and various kinds of machinery with frequent starts and stops, cycling throughout the day, it becomes clear that the demand load is enormous.

For the customer, reduction of in-rush current dramatically cuts wear and tear on moving parts of equipment, thereby saving on down time and maintenance cost……….. A WIN, WIN SITUATION!

If there were a method of reducing the amount of in-rush current needed to start motors, the demand placed on power

companies could be proportionately lowered……. A significant drop in demand load would aid tremendously in the elimination of “rolling black-outs”.

Once the motor has been soft-started, The ITS Motor Manager begins to analyze the work that is being performed to determine the exact amount of electric power that is needed.

Essentially, the ITS matches the horse power to the “work-of-a-moment” requirements.

This precise matching of horse power to load requirements, virtually eliminates any waste of electricity!

The ITS is the only motor optimization system found by the National Bureau of Standards to deliver 100% optimization.

How is this accomplished?

The ITS creates minute breaks in current, by interpreting radio signals from the motor. These signals indicate the exact amount of electricity the motor needs to accomplish work load, at any given moment. The momentum of the rotor continues to turn through these tiny break periods and delivers smooth operation.

…. By creating these breaks in current, there is a pronounced reduction in volts and amperes used to power the motor. Only the exact amount of electric energy is supplied to the motor to perform the work. This eliminates the wasted electricity.

The reduction of wattage (volt X amp) is reflected on the meter…. Reducing cost!

Electricity that is not efficiently used by the motor must find “some place to go”. Waste electricity is dissipated in the form of heat inside the motor windings and housing.

Heat is the primary destructive factor in any motor. By eliminating the wasted electricity, the temperature in the motor is dramatically lowered.

….The laws of thermodynamics relating to motors say, “ if you can reduce the temperature in the motor windings by 10 degrees, the life of the motor will be doubled”. This is one of the by-products of the ITS Motor Manager’s application.
