• Country music is a genre of USA popular music that originated in the southern United States in the 1920s • It takes its roots from the southeastern genre of United States, such as folk music and blues music. • Country music often consists of ballads and dance tunes • According to Lindsey Starnes, the term country music gained popularity in the 1940s • The term country music is used today to describe many styles and subgenres. The origins of country music are the folk music of working-‐class Americans • In 2009 country music was the most listened to rush hour radio genre during the evening commute, and second most popular in the morning commute in the United States. • Representors: Gretchen Wilson, Big & Rich
HIP-‐HOP , RAP
• hip-‐hop or rap music, is a music genre developed in the United States by inner-‐city African Americans in the 1970s • It developed as part of hip hop culture, a subculture defined by four key stylistic elements: MCing/rapping, DJing/scratching with turntables, break dancing, and graffiti writing. • Other elements include sampling beats or bass lines from records, and rhythmic beatboxing. • In the 1990s, hip hop began to diversify with other regional styles emerging, such as Southern rap and Atlanta hip hop. • representors: Migos, Eminem, The Weeknd, 50 Cent, Iggy Azalea
