Hodu L’Adonai ki tov, ki l’olam chasdo. Give thanks to God, for God is good. God’s love and mercy are everlasting.
These words are from my favorite psalm, psalm 118 (yes, I have a favorite psalm). I walked down the aisle to these words sung by our cantors twelve years ago this month. I sang it to my children in the middle of the night. Its words are simple, its message clear: thank you God for my life, for the good that’s in it, and for all the blessings that have come my way. And to be honest, I sing this psalm not just when my life is mundane and easy, but even more when challenges come my way. I am not grateful for experiencing adversity. I am grateful for moving through it, surviving it, and coming out the other end. Hodu l’Adonai, I am grateful to you, God.
This month Americans will gather around their family tables to celebrate Thanksgiving. It’s time that we set aside once a year to give everyone an opportunity to share what they are grateful for. As Americans, we are proud to take part in this ritual. As Jews, we know that everyday is an opportunity to give thanks to God. In fact, Psalm 118 is recited on every festival, and every rosh chodesh (first day of a new month). We recite a prayer of thanksgiving every single day in our morning service. Judaism is at its core a tradition replete with gratitude; gratitude for our world, our lives, and our God who made all things possible.
Amazingly, the word for turkey in Hebrew is hodu, the same word that begins Psalm 118. Don’t you love it when your Jewish identity and your American identity come together so seamlessly? For us as Jews, when we eat turkey on Thanksgiving, we are literally ingesting gratitude at the same time we celebrate all we are grateful for.
But how do we do this all the time, and not just on Thanksgiving or a Jewish festival? For some, they write in a journal. Others use an app on their phone that lets them record a few things that make them feel grateful. In our family, we play the roses and thorns game when we sit down to dinner. A rose is the best part of your day, and a thorn is something that wasn’t so great, or something that you wished had gone differently. The game is simple, but it is a way to say out loud that we recognize the gifts that are around us, and that often, those gifts are often accompanied by obstacles or disappointments.
I find that I am the ultimate cliché when I am choosing my rose. I am so grateful for the smallest elements in life- the ones that others might see as insignificant. I am grateful for sunshine; for both the light and warmth. I am grateful for the roof over my head, and how it protects the people I love. I am grateful for a full night’s sleep, for fresh fruit, and good friends on the other side of a phone call or text. I am grateful for a loving community that has given me the honor of being their Rabbi. Mountains need not move, nor seas part, for me to say, hodu l’Adonai; God, I am so grateful.
Use this year’s Thanksgiving as a launch into a new gratitude practice. I promise, you will be grateful you did.

progress so far! As you drive into Temple,

FUNDS IN ACTIONFUNDS IN ACTION
Supports Temple Israel’s BrotherhoodWhile some mission statements are lengthy in detail, Brotherhood officer and past
president Brian Karbel describes his affiliate group’s purpose very simply - Give back to Temple Israel. The Brotherhood Fund has been accomplishing this important goal for years through a variety of campaigns and endeavors, including camp scholarships, the Usher Corp, Housing the Homeless, blood drives and college dinners for our students.
Brian and the Brotherhood membership take pride in the sustaining assistance they provide Temple, and they would love to see more men join them in this significant mission. Not only do Brotherhood members support our congregation, but they
also strengthen each other - as men, Jews and concerned members of this community. While giving back is the main focus, Brotherhood membership is not only about social justice. It also offers a lot of fun opportunities for entertainment, education and
engaging events.
The next time you see a Brotherhood fundraiser (like the upcoming Feed Yourself-Feed the Homeless events at California Pizza Kitchen on page 28), know that your donation supports meaningful assistance and life-changing opportunities. And joining
Brotherhood helps even more! They have preserved their original purpose while building a contemporary element that you will find relevant and refreshing. Check out Brotherhood at temple-israel.org/brotherhood. It’s a contribution - and a substantial
connection - that you’ll never regret.
Supports Torah and text study programmingEstablished in 2014 by Eleanor Folbe Jackier and Larry Jackier, this important fund supports Temple Israel programming dedicated to the study of Torah, Mishna and
Talmud and other traditional Jewish texts impacting Reform Judaism. The fund helps provide opportunities to develop a better understanding of the purpose and values of certain prayers, the weekly Torah portions and the Jewish holidays. The generosity of
Eleanor and Larry has supported programs such as our weekly Torah lessons and High Holiday study sessions which are significant to congregants as they strengthen their
connection to and their understanding of Torah.
Considerably more than furthering knowledge, Torah study is a mitzvah. And for the Jewish people, it’s a quest that never ends. As Simchat Torah marks the completion of the annual reading cycle and the beginning of the next, re-examining the Torah
revives energy, reveals new meaning and provides powerful direction.
Regardless of where you are in your studies, you are not behind. It’s a journey that can begin or resume at any time. And thanks to the Larry & Eleanor Jackier Jewish Education Fund, the opportunities are growing. Call the Tyner Religious School today at
248-661-5725 to learn more about Temple’s adult education curriculum.
These are only a few of more than 160 special funds that help Temple Israel achieve its mission. The funds engage our members and connect with the community through creative outreach, compassionate assistance and meaningful celebration. The impact
from these funds is remarkable, allowing children to learn, families to heal and people to grow. Many thanks to our fund grantors who recognized a need - and to our donors who continually support Temple’s efforts to reach those in need.
To learn more about Temple’s funds and other giving opportunities, go to temple-israel.org and click on GIVING. If you’re interested in creating a fund, contact David Tisdale, 248-661-5700.

WHO: Our new Shabbat record was produced by Gemini and Canadian Screen Award winning composer Ari Posner across three cities: Detroit, Toronto and Tel Aviv. Some of the most gifted musicians and producers from these three bustling music scenes have come together to create an album that is a true labor of love.
Along with our own beloved music team Cantor Smolash, Cantor Michaels, Rabbi Lader, and Soloist Trivax, our new Artist in Residence, Jacob Kraus also makes an appearance. We also have features from Hezi Yakov - the top darbuka player in Israel, Sonia Lee on violin, our own Shawn McDonald on piano and many more.
We thank Sarah Gottlieb, as we remember also the generosity of her husband Haroldz”l Gottlieb, who together made this amazing album possible in memory of their beloved son, Stephen.
We hope this project will be a treasured part of Temple’s story, helping new members learn our melodies, inspiring families at special times, or just keeping you company in the car until we see you again on Friday night.
