It boasts a beautiful city center with historical buildings, canals and the remainders of an old city wall. On August 31, 1230, it was granted city rights by the bishop of Utrecht. Zwolle became a member of the Hanseatic League in 1294, and in 1361 joined the war between the Hanseatic League and Valdemar IV of Denmark. Sassenpoort. The ‘Sassenpoort’ (English: Sassen gate) is a gatehouse in the city wall ofZwolle.Itwasbuiltin1409outofdimensionstone,mostlytrachyteandtuff,andrestorationworkwas done in 1893-1898. The gatehouse is amonument and is part of the Top 100Dutch heritage sites. The facial gate is still the only remaining gate from the city's wallmount.ThelargesizeofthiscitygatedisplayedthewealthofZwolleduringthatperiod.Thegatehad tobe sowide that the cartswereable topassunderneath theopening.Afterathoroughinspection,thedoorswereopenedtothecity.Thegatekeepersalsohadthetaskofpayingattentiontoexternalfeaturesofthevisitorssuchasbrandmarksoracut-offear.Thesewerenotallowedtothecity!The‘Sassenpoort’isaninnergate.Theoutergatewasatthe ‘Sassenpoorter’ bridge. Between the outer and the inner gate was a roundabout /walled square. In 1524 the Duke Karel van Gelre wanted to conquer Zwolle. TheZwollenaren conceived a list! The Duke was admitted at the outer gate. Immediatelythereafter theoutergatewasclosed, leaving the restofhisarmyoutside.The innergatewasalsoclosedimmediately.TheresultwasthattheDukewascaughtbetweentwogates.Afterpromisingthathewould leaveZwollealone,hecouldgo.Hedidnotkeephisword,because after a month he besieged Zwolle for 4 weeks. Eventually, he did not conquerZwolle. After the construction of the bastions and fortifications (1592-1612), the‘Sassenpoort’becameaprisonuntil1739.OpenSaturday11:00amto5:00pm;entrancefeeadultsis2.50Euros.
