DEPENDENCIES
The Fast Controllers catalog and datasheet documents it is referring to are supporting documents of CODAC Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH, ITER_D_27LH2V) and they cannot be used, implemented or referred alone, without the corresponding PCDH document. Like with all PCDH satellite documents, new versions of this catalog are published regularly. Please make sure to always retrieve the latest version of this and all other related PCDH satellite documents from the ITER document management system (IDM).
ITER Catalog of I&C Products for Fast Controllers gives a list of COTS products recommended by the ITER Organization for Fast I/O systems. ITER Catalog of I&C Products for Fast Controllers is a living document, which is released at regular intervals throughout the lifetime of ITER. Versions of standards and products are subject to updates and extensions as the ITER project progresses.
1.1 PCDH context
The Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH) [RD1] defines methodology, standards, specifications and interfaces applicable to ITER Plant Systems Instrumentation & Control (I&C) system life cycle. I&C standards are essential for ITER in order to:
• Integrate all plant systems into one, integrated control system. • Maintain all plant systems after the delivery acceptance. • Contain cost by economy of scale.
PCDH comprises a core document which presents the plant system I&C life cycle and recaps the main rules to be applied to the plant system I&Cs for conventional controls, interlocks and safety controls. Some I&C topics will be explained in greater detail in dedicated documents associated with PCDH as presented in the picture below. This document is one of them.
1.2 Objectives
This catalog has been created and is constantly maintained to help the Plant System manufacturers and system integrators in their work. The primary objective is to promote the usage of identical equipment in all Plant Systems so that the integration and interoperability with the ITER Instrumentation and Control system would be seamless. The secondary objective is to coordinate site-wide maintenance of the equipment. The third objective is to provide tools for the obsolescence management.

4
The objectives will be met by a careful selection of industrial COTS products which will comply with existing standards, defined by the Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH, [RD1]).
The plant system integration requirement is met by providing software support within CODAC Core System for all items in this catalog. The level of available software support may vary. When applicable, instructions will be provided for cabling, signal interfacing and installation instructions for the ITER standard cubicles.
1.3 Scope of the Document
Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH, [RD1]) defines Slow I/O systems and Fast I/O systems. Slow I/O systems will be realized mainly using PLC devices which are out of the scope of this document. In exceptional cases of mixed I/O requirements within a single system both Slow I/O and Fast I/O can be done using a Fast Controller.
The document addresses therefore mainly the needs for Fast I/O systems, created using COTS system items, named Fast Controllers in the Plant Control Design Handbook, explained in detail in a specific Fast Controller guideline satellite document [RD2].
The network interconnects are out of scope of this document, the starting point of the Plant Operation Network interconnect is discussed in Integration Kit for PS I&C satellite document [RD4]. The High Performance Network interconnect items in this document is given only as a design reference while their procurement is under the responsibility of the ITER Organization.

[RD2] Guideline for Fast Controllers, I/O Bus Systems and Communication Methods between Interconnected Systems (333K4C v2.0)
This chapter gives examples of system configurations that ITER CODAC Team recommends for Fast Controllers.
2.1 General Purpose Fast Controller
The picture below illustrates an example of a general purpose Fast Controller configuration which can be made using items in this catalog. The basic configuration and other more advanced configurations are suggested in Guideline for Fast Controllers, I/O Bus Systems and Communication Methods between Interconnected Systems [RD2], which explains more in detail the recommended usage of the items in this
catalog.
The picture below illustrates an example configuration installed into an ITER standard cubicle. To find building instructions, please refer to I&C cubicle internal configuration guideline document [RD3].

3 PERFORMANCE GRADES
Plant Control Design Handbook (PCDH, [RD1]) defines Slow I/O systems being able to deal with control loops which are slower or equal of 100 Hz. From that follows that Fast I/O systems shall be able to deal with the entire frequency range above the 100 Hz but also the slow I/O range, since sometimes it does not make sense to install a slow controller PLC just for a single digital line for motor control, for example.
Therefore the “Fast I/O” as performance category definition is quite wide. This chapter introduces two Fast Controller Performance Grade categories, the I&C performance grade and the Data Acquisition (DAQ) performance grade. These grades are used throughout the document to better organize the catalog items.
Figure 2 below illustrates the Fast Controller Performance Grades, the “I&C” and “DAQ” performance grades, how they map to the different application ranges, what interconnect and form factors are available for each application range and what is the product range coverage in this catalog.
The Guideline for Fast Controllers [RD2] gives in-depth explanation about different I/O bus systems, network interconnects and various form factors. It is highly recommended to start with that document while this catalog shall be used as reference only and not as a learning tool or design guide.

4 SUPPORT CATEGORY LEGEND
During the selection process of the items in this catalog the ITER Organization has paid attention to the overall solution provided by each suggested I/O chassis and board. In many cases, a selection process and special manufacturing has taken place to provide a complete solution by using a single ITER part number. By using the ITER part number you would usually get a bundled product, with ITER Organization selected and accepted cabling and mounting solutions, allowing you to take full advantage of the I&C Cubicle Internal Configuration Guide [RD3], simplifying greatly the design and assembly process.
In addition, the ITER part number provides you useful information in several other support categories, such as signal interfacing, cabling solutions, thermal analysis, reliability, magnetic and radiation field resistance and last but not least in the available software support.
ITER part numbers are one of the key factors in the obsolescence management during the lifetime of the ITER project. The ITER Organization is maintaining a Component Lifecycle Management database for the electronic components in ITER I&C. The identification of the critical components can be done reliably only with the help of unique part numbers which will be maintained throughout the project lifetime. The ITER Organization and the manufacturers have been working together to make the ITER part numbers available from the beginning of the component’s life, i.e. the purchasing process. Please use those numbers whenever possible. National Instruments items part numbers for ITER are all summarized in one document, [RD5].
In below tables you will find the legend which is used in the Fast Controller product tables, defining the support category availability.

RELBTY Explanation
PCDH Reliability statistics from the manufacturer are available and they are collected in datasheets so that they can be used to calculate the overall system reliability according the ITER requirements
PLAN The IO is in process to acquire and format the reliability statistics for the item.
N/A The IO does not plan to provide the reliability statistics for the item.
N/R The reliability statistics are not relevant for this item.
CCS The device is fully supported in CODAC Core System software (SDD, EPICS device support, Health Management, Linux device driver support w/ a specified FPGA binary, when applicable). User’s Guide is available in CCS documentation set. CODAC support (ex. [email protected]) available only at this level.
BETA All of the same elements as with CCS level category are available at beta quality level, for a manual installation, installing also the documentation in the local file system from an ITER repository (i.e. RPMs in SVN or codac-dist). At this level, no CODAC support is available by default but it can be arranged case by case, please contact the author of this document directly to get the links to the software and documentation.
ALPHA Some software support exists but not at CODAC Core System quality level, only at alpha quality level. For example, only the Linux support may be available but no EPICS support. Also, the documentation does not have to be completely available. The availability of the software on the ITER repository server is not mandatory but a working, CCS-compatible packaging (mvn, rpm) for RHEL 6.x is mandatory even in this category. No CODAC support is available by default but it can be decided, case by case to leverage the software to the beta level. To start with a ALPHA level software, please contact the author of this document directly to get the links to the software and documentation.
This chapter lists recommended I/O chassis configurations with their connectivity solutions.
