Learning is...THE JOURNEY

OF SELF-DISCOVERING.

Page 4: iTDi Focus on Learning

“Teaching is definitely not TRANSFERING knowledge, but CREATING POSSIBILITIES for it

to be produced or constructed.”

Freire

To become more self-aware on what they know,

make new connectionsand be able to construct and produce new language

knowledge,

They need to have the space to reflect on what they are doing IN & Out of the

classroom.

Why should teachers change?

Pedagogy of Autonomy

Who teaches learn while teaching, and who learns teaches while learning.

Teachers do not only teach content, but also teach how to think by being thinkers themselves, reading the world critically.

There is no teaching without research, and research without teaching.

Teaching demands respecting what learners know, discuss their reality and make learning something concrete, rather than vague.

Paulo Freire

Teaching demands coherence. Teachers are role models for learners.

Teaching demands taking risks, accepting novelty and rejecting any form of discrimination.

Teaching demands dialoguing. The teacher challenges learners to express their understanding of what is being communicated.

Teaching demands praxis, not just practice.

I cannot talk about learning without talking about teaching. I cannot talk about teaching without talking about learning. They are intertwined and so do learners and teachers.

I learn, I discuss, I share,

I listen!

How do learners become more responsable for their own learning?

First, the learners have to become aware of the difference their contribution can make, and of the nature of language learning in general (Raising awareness). Second, they need some well-structured practice in their new attitudes as responsible learners (Changing Atittudes) so that, in the third phase, they will be ready to take over some roles from the teacher and enjoy the freedom that comes with increased responsibility (Transfering Roles). Scharle & Szabó (2009, introduction)

Lessons I’ve learned so far

Believe they are capable of managing their own learning;

Make sure they have choices. Give them time to reflect on their choices, actions & on the result of them. Bring up the possible consequences for not doing something for example.

Don’t lecture them. Let them reflect on it. Learn to ask questions.

PROBLEM

They said:

Page 16: iTDi Focus on Learning

Discussing with learners theproblem was really important. WE had a chance to reflect on together and come up with suggestions. Listening to them gave me a lot of input on how they think and what their needs are. Not to mention that they know what they don’t like, but don’t know how to change it, promoting dialogue is crucial.

FEEDBACK IS..The ongoing conversations that emerge out of necessity or requested. It’s our conclusions, ideas, guidance that we offer to one another with the aim to improve, enhance or make something better.

Thanks for attending!
