Welcome to this month’s edition of the technology newsletter. The intent of this newsletter is to ensure that everyone is aware of a number of key events taking place throughout the IT department. Over the past few months, the focus for the IT Leadership team has been centered around developing the Fis- cal Year 2013 Budget. Now that the budget exercise is complete, the leadership team is turning its atten- tion to further developing a core set of key perform- ance indicators (KPI’s) that will give way to the effi- ciency of the IT operations. These indicators will measure everything from customer satisfaction to system stability. The overarching need is to ensure that there is a mechanism in place to ensure we are focused on the right programs and initiatives that will help move our district forward. The use of both quantitative and qualitative met- rics is a key part of helping to provide the right level of insights. Further, these metrics will help focus the attention of the department and ensure that we are collectively doing the right work to help move the district forward. Our focus on sustainability, reliability and predictability will ultimately be realized as we struc- ture the right metrics for our department. Welcome to this month’s edition of the technology

newsletter. The intent of this newsletter is to ensure

that everyone is aware of a number of key events

taking place throughout the IT department. Over the

past few months, the focus for the IT Leadership

team has been centered around developing the Fis-

cal Year 2013 Budget. Now that the budget exercise

is complete, the leadership team is turning its atten-

tion to further developing a core set of key perform-

ance indicators (KPI’s) that will give way to the effi-

ciency of the IT operations. These indicators will

measure everything from customer satisfaction to

system stability. The overarching need is to ensure

that there is a mechanism in place to ensure we are

focused on the right programs and initiatives that will

help move our district forward. The use of both quantitative and qualitative met-

rics is a key part of helping to provide the right level of insights. Further, these

metrics will help focus the attention of the department and ensure that we are

collectively doing the right work to help move the district forward. Our focus on

sustainability, reliability and predictability will ultimately be realized as we struc-

ture the right metrics for our department.

Last Month Newsletter Answer: Who developed the mouse for the first time, on what computer and which year?

The first computer mouse was developed by Douglas Englebart during the 60's and was patented on 11/17/1970. The mouse

was first used with the Xerox Alto Computer system in 1973. But because it was not a total success, the first widely used

mouse is credited to being the mouse found on the Apple Lisa computer.

W. JEROME OBERLTON

W. Jerome Oberlton received the ‘Distinguished Service Award’ from

the Council of Great City Schools (CGCS) in June 2012. It is an award

that is given to one leader every year who demonstrates and exhibits

a high level of leadership, commitment, innovation and professional-

ism. He was overwhelmingly blessed to receive the award and

thrilled that the CGCS recognized him as the top CIO in urban educa-

tion across the country. It was both a surprise and a delight for

him. However, he knows that one person doesn’t achieve success

on his/her own . “it takes a strong staff who are committed to making

a difference. “ said Mr. Oberlton.

ITD SPOTLIGHT

RON BEAZER

Ron Beazer received the ‘GEM Award’

Ron Beazer is well known in City Schools as a person who does out-

standing work in support of the online training, classroom technology

infusion and providing guidance to school based leadership in mak-

ing good decisions around the use of instructional technology. What

is not well known is the role he plays in the lives of many young men

in our schools. Ron is the leader of a mentoring group in the commu-

nity called One More One Less (OMOL). This mentoring group helps

young men and boys in the Belmont community have a positive male

presence in their lives. Ron spend considerable time on the week-

ends, over the holidays and even during the school day helping stu-

dents in the OMOL group as they strive to find their way to a produc-

tive life. Ron has four children of his own, but understands how im-

portant all children in our community are for the success of our

school district. Ron goes the extra mile not just in his job but in the

community as well.
