Mr Lee was HSIE Head of Department at Scots Bathurst and has an excellent record in teaching Ancient History at HSC level. Current parents would know Mr Lee for the wonderful progress he has made in the English Department and with his HSC English classes, and the vibrant impact he has made since coming to the school as Head of English at the start of 2014. Mr Lee’s Year 9/10 English classes will be taken by Mrs Mel Laughton. Mrs Laughton’s Year 7/8 HSIE classes will be taken by Mrs Erica Kerridge.

Those who have read our new Strategic Plan will have noticed that various operational plans
are due to emerge over the course of this and subsequent years. If you have not had a
chance to read the Strategic Plan, I commend it to you. It is available on our website.
The function of our Strategic Plan is to nominate the school’s vision and establish general
strategic objectives in the areas of

The various operational plans are the data-driven, explicit documents that contain
measurable goals and the precise strategies and activities that will achieve them.
The first intention of this school is to provide an excellent education for our students. The
school’s central vision, from our current Strategic Plan, is

Years 11 and 12 Ancient History
The school community would be aware that Mrs Stewart, our Ancient History teacher, leaves
us this week. Mrs Stewart departs at the end of term for Melbourne with her family.
I am happy to announce that Mr Adrian Lee will be taking Mrs Stewarts’ Ancient History
classes. Mr Lee was HSIE Head of Department at Scots Bathurst and has an excellent record
in teaching Ancient History at HSC level. Current parents would know Mr Lee for the
wonderful progress he has made in the English Department and with his HSC English classes,
and the vibrant impact he has made since coming to the school as Head of English at the
start of 2014.
Mr Lee’s Year 9/10 English classes will be taken by Mrs Mel Laughton. Mrs Laughton’s Year 7/8
HSIE classes will be taken by Mrs Erica Kerridge.
I am grateful to these staff for their flexibility and enthusiasm in embracing these changes. I
am happy that we have been able to maintain good continuity and quality of teaching for
these Year 11 and 12 cohorts as they work towards the HSC.
Lockdown and Evacuation Drills
We expect to run a lock down drill this week, 9-13 March, and an evacuation drill during the
week of 16-20 March.
This is a good opportunity to mention our parents’ role during lock downs. In the event of a
genuine lock down, parents do sometimes attempt to contact their child. This is
understandable, of course. The objective of a lock down, however, is to keep children silent
and out of sight. A telephone call or text message at such a time would indicate the child’s
location (and the location of other children and the teacher) to anyone who might hear it.
Arriving at the school can also complicate the situation and, again, jeopardise the safety of
staff and students.
For this reason we ask that no parent attempt to contact their child during a lock down
procedure. Thanks for your co-operation in this.

World Read Aloud Day -
Wednesday the 4th of March is World Read Aloud Day. This is a timely opportunity to remind
all parents and families of the importance of reading aloud to young children. One
interesting statistic is below;
"Reading aloud to children every day puts them almost a year ahead of children who do not
receive daily read aloud regardless of parental income, education level or cultural
background.”(Melbourne Institute of Applied Economic and Social Research)

Dudley Debating 2015 Dudley Debating will be held at Kinross tomorrow (Tuesday 10.03). This is a competition
between local Orange and region schools with three impromptu debates in the day. Year 10
students Georgia Balcomb, Josh Dunnett, Morgan Thomas and Curtis Bennett will be
representing the school on the day. We wish them all the best and good debating.
HICES Debating 2015
HICES Debating Round 2 will be held at Orange Grammar and at Blue Mountains Grammar
next week. Our two middle teams (Years 7 & 8 students) will be competing against Kinross
teams in Mr Lee and Mrs Laughton’s rooms from 2pm on Monday 16 March. Anyone
interested in listening in is welcome especially parents of the students involved.
The other three teams (Junior, Senior and Open) will travel to Blue Mountains for the
remainder of the debates on Thursday 19 March.

HICES Debating 2015 HICES Debating Round 1 was held at Scots in Bathurst last week. It was a pleasant occasion
of argument and ideas in an atmosphere of respect. There were solid results for each of our
teams and although all but the Middle B team (Year 8) went down in each case they were
close results. Each team received positive comments from the adjudicators.
Particularly pleasing given that again all of our teams are quite inexperienced. Our new
primary team of Jess, Henry, Imogen and Elouisa did well in their first HICES debate. Well
done.
Dudley Cup Debating is on Mar 10 at Kinross and Round 2 of HICES at Blue Mountains on Mar
19. More information will be coming out to teams soon.

National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy 2015
LETTER TO PARENTS
In May 2015 the National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) will be completed by students in Years 3, 5, 7 and 9. NAPLAN has the support of all State and Territory Education Ministers and will assess the literacy and numeracy skills of students across Australian schools.
The results of the tests will provide important information to schools about what each student can do, and will be used to support teaching and learning programs. Parents will receive a report indicating their child’s level of achievement. Each student’s level of achievement will be reported against the national minimum standard.
Student background information (student name, gender, date of birth, language background and Aboriginality) will be collected as part of the National Assessment Program. This information is treated confidentially and held securely to ensure that every student’s right to privacy is maintained.
The NAPLAN tests will be conducted from 12-14 May 2015.

Reading Numeracy
In the Numeracy tests students do not require any measuring tools such as rulers or protractors. In Years 7 and 9 there will be two Numeracy tests: one where a calculator is allowed and one where calculators are not to be used. For the calculator test, the student should use the calculator that they currently use at school.
Friday 15 May – A ‘catch-up’ day is scheduled for students who missed a test or were absent on a test day. Students may be considered for exemption from the tests if they:
• are newly arrived in Australia (less than one year before the test) and with a language background other than English, or
• have significant intellectual disability and/or significant co-existing conditions which severely limit their capacity to
participate in the tests.
All other students are expected to participate in the tests. Disability adjustments which reflect the student’s normal level of support in the classroom may be provided. Large print, Braille, coloured paper versions and electronic tests are available to meet the needs of individual students.
Access to disability adjustments or exemption from the tests must be discussed with the school principal and a parent or carer consent form must be signed. Students may be withdrawn from NAPLAN by their parent or carer. This is a matter for consideration by parents in consultation with the Principal. If you wish to withdraw your child from the tests, a parent or carer consent form must be signed.
Please make an appointment with the principal of the school your child attends if you would like to discuss your child’s participation in NAPLAN.

The Award is an enriching program that invites young people between the ages of 14 and 25 to participate in a number of activities over a set length of time. Participation is entirely voluntary and is structured so Participants can design their own unique program centered around their interests and passions. The Award is available to all young people aged between 14 and 25. There are three levels to The Award: Bronze/Silver/Gold. Each level of The Award has four mandatory Sections:

residential Project Broaden your horizons and open your eyes to the world. in Australia or anywhere around the globe, limited only by your imagination.
for each Section, the Participant must select and undertake an activity that fits in with the purpose of that Section, for the minimum amount of time specified for their chosen level. for example, a Participant may choose swimming for fitness/Physical recreation, drumming for Skill, assisting at a child care centre for Volunteering and a hiking expedition for Adventurous Journey. At every level, each Participant must be the required age, and must undertake the minimum required commitment for each Section, in order to achieve their chosen Award. A Participant does not have to achieve the Bronze and/or Silver Award in order to undertake the Gold Award, however they must meet the minimum age requirements. for every level of The Award, a Major Section must be chosen. This means that a Participant must choose to undertake their activity for either fitness/Physical recreation, Skill or Volunteering for an additional length of time. The additional length of time differs depending on the level. Please see following chart for details. The framework for The Award is:
