WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW

Why do they build their houses right on the water?

Well, if you are refering to the city of Venice, the city is actually built up on an island. Canals, rather than paved streets, are the most common way to get around. You’ve probably heard of gondolas…well boats of all kinds float through the canals of Venice, even ambulance boats!!

As for the other cities located on the water, it made sense before vehicles to be located near water in order to transport goods and people by boat.

WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW: THE HISTORY

Here’s a historical note: The capital city of Italy, Rome, was named

after it’s first king Romolo. Legend has it that Romolo and his twin brother were raised by wolves. In ancient Rome wolves were worshipped as a result. In Rome today you’ll still find statues of wolves.

The city of Rome is over 2,500 years old. In the years between 98 CE and 275 CE it was the center of government of the vast Roman Empire.

WHAT WE WANT TO KNOW: THE HISTORY

The most popular sport in Ancient Rome was Chariot Racing.

Chariots were pulled at great speed by two or four specially trained horses

Accidents were regular and charioteers were often trampled to death

Another “sport” was watching gladiators wrestle wild beasts in the Colosseo (the coliseum)

Today the Colosseo is considered a holy place where those who died are honored– how things change!
