Often called health biomedical informatics or bioinformatics, HMIS forms part of the wider domain of eHealth, reflecting the large contribution of the non-medical professions to the generation and usage of data and information related to medicine, health care and public health.
Aspects of the field:
� Building of architectures for electronic medical records and other health information systems used for billing, scheduling or research.
� Initiation of decision support systems in healthcare.
� Adopting standards for the exchange of information between health care information systems.
� Spreading the use of controlled medical vocabularies such as the Standardized Nomenclature of Medicine, as well as other names and codes used to allow a standard, accurate exchange of data content between systems and providers.
� Encouraging the use of hand-held or portable devices to assist providers with data entry/retrieval or medical decision-making.

Health Management Information Systems (HMIS) is a field of study concerned with the broad range of issues in the management and use of biomedical information, including medical computing and the study of the nature of medical information itself.
