This Is My Brave®, a national non-profit organization, is the leading plat-form for individuals with lived experience to share their stories of living successful lives despite a diagnosis of a mental illness. Shows are com-
munity-based events held at local theaters, where volunteer producers au-dition and select a cast of individuals who are ready to share their true sto-ries of living with mental illness through original poetry, music, comedy,
dance or personal essay. This Is My Brave is committed to end the stigma surrounding mental health issues. Each time one of us shares our story,
there’s another crack helping to break down the stigma surrounding men-tal illness.
This Is My Brave - Wheeling is a joint production by NAMI Greater Wheeling and Youth Services System, Inc. (YSS)
Dear NAMI Members,
Summer is almost over! School is starting soon. The beautiful fall leaves will be here before you know it. It’s back to our busy schedules. Please keep in mind the upcoming events for the NAMI family that have been mentioned in this newsletter.
Laura Greenstein, Communications Coordinator at NAMI, wrote an article for the 2017 Spring Advocate and NAMI website titled “Lessons We Missed as Kids: Practicing Mental Health”. As children, most of us were taught to care for our physical health, but not our psychological health. Emotional and psychological wounds of inferiority, failure, rejection, loneliness, and anxiety greatly impact our quality of life.
Here are some lessons to learn from Ms. Greenstein. 1.Battle negative thinking. Instead of thinking everything is wrong, make a conscious effort to distract yourself
by listening to music, talking to a positive person, remembering positive experiences, or doing a physical activity.
2.Focus on one thought. Is this thought productive? If not, move on to another focus. 3.Change your responses to failure. Accept that you made a mistake. It’s OK. 4.Show yourself compassion. Treat yourself like you treat a close friend or family member. Remember that
positive feeling of compassion? Try feeling that for yourself. 5.Take action when you are lonely. Force yourself out of isolation and reach out to others. Become involved in
activities that have meaning to you. 6.Slow down and rest. Rest allows the brain to absorb and process new information, work through unresolved
conflict, increase memory, and decrease anxiety and depression. Get some rest. 7.Be grateful. Gratitude and self-worth are connected.
For the moment, mental health care coverage is intact. National NAMI thanks all who made calls, sent texts and e-mails, signed petitions, told their stories, and met with legislators to prevent loss of mental health care coverage and Medicaid. We need to thank the senators who voted “no” for the “Skinny Repeal” (Sen. Manchin), while urging senators who voted “yes” (Sen. Capito) to work for bipartisan solutions to fix the mar-ketplace and healthcare coverage, not strip mental health care coverage and Medicaid.
Enjoy the rest of the summer and fall. Hope to see you at the NAMI events.

Marian House NAMI Drop In Center News
Jesse Krall, Operations Director, conducts many groups centered around mental health awareness. One of his most popular groups is a session focused on anger issues and specific strategies to deal with an-ger. Marian House client Christopher says, "Talking about anger issues helps me learn how to keep my anger under control."
We have a weekly geography group, led by Associate Director, Rose-mary Ketchum, where clients choose a country of interest and answer a list of questions about the culture and certain facts about the region. The group has completed research on countries like Australia, Ireland, Russia, North Korea documenting traits and traditions for each loca-tion. Marian House client Ashley says, "Learning about other cultures gives me a better understanding of how other people live around the world."
Art Display at Centre Market all of October. Theme is Emotions.
