Based on these citations, describe what impression is created in the reader of Hamlet, his mother, and their relationship? At this point, explain what is really bothering Hamlet more than anything. b. Log#5: Read (1.3) and use it as a basis for the following analysis: i. Describe the family relationships - laertes and Ophelia, Polonius and laertes, Polonius and Ophelia. ii. What does each of these people want? How do they treat each other? iii. How is this family similar to/different from the Claudius/Gertrude/Hamlet family? The Old Hamlet/Gertrude/Hamlet family? iv. Carefully examine the language of Polonius (starting at 1.3.59). 1. Syntax: look at "but" constructions - "Be thou familiar, but by no means vulgar," for example. What is their effect? 2. Characterization: What can we infer about Polonius from his choice of words?
