Key Stage 1 Learning Targets To develop an ever-improving capability to use English ~ to recognize some obvious features of the English Language in simple spoken and written texts such as the combination of two small words and the sound patterns of English; and apply this awareness to one’s initial learning and use of the language (K.S.f) ~ to develop an awareness and an enjoyment of the basic sound patterns of English in imaginative texts through activities such as participating in rhymes and singing songs (E.S.a) Communicative Functions 1. Identify several kinds of food and drink and describe quantities 2. Identify several kinds of insects and sea creatures 3. Use interrogatives to ask questions such as “Is he a thief?” and “Is this a new magic book?” 4. State opinions such as “I don’t think he’s a thief.” and “I think he’s a magician.” 1

Suggested Activities1. Motivate pupils by bringing the pictures and the cutouts of the words in

COPYMASTER 1 to class. Ask them to put any two words together to see if a new and meaningful word can be made.

2. Explain to pupils that not all combinations of words can make new meaningful words but they can explore and try to find the trick as they learn new vocabulary

items. That way, pupils can read and pronounce new words more easily.3. Briefly explain to pupils the programme and the main characters: Mr Magician,

Melissa and Max.4. To expand pupils’ vocabularies, draw their attention to the meanings of the single

words and the new meanings after the words are combined, although some of them may not make sense.

5. In COPYMASTER 1 pupils put two words together to match the pictures. Answers: a. Meatballs b. Sandwiches c. Hamburger d. Cheeseburger6. In COPYMASTER 2, pupils can sing along to the lyrics to discover the joy of

combining words.7. Is Mr Magician a thief? Teacher can replay the segment and asks pupils to listen

to what the woman and the children say about Mr Magician in the canteen. Then ask pupils to circle the answers given by those people in COPYMASTER 3.
