Positive peer infl uence supports healthy teen development. When teens have a positive friend, they develop abilities like interpersonal competence, which means having the skills to get along with and appreciate others.

Friendship, for teens, is one of the most important things in the world. Friends and friendships become the central part in their lives. Social interactions with different kinds of people help them develop social skills.Therefore, it is important to encourage teens to look for and maintain positive friendships. Through these relationships, they learn about themselves. Experiencing a variety of friendships teaches teens how to build successful relationships and learn to handle confl ict.

It is important to keep in mind some tips when looking for and/or being a good friend: - care for each other - be honest and keep communication open to avoid misunderstandings - make sure you share common interests, goals, and values

Remember, these are things that can ruin a friendship: - manipulation and jealousy - dishonesty and negative attitudes - blaming each other for problems

Finally, having friends is one of the most rewarding and satisfying events in our lives. Teens should make sure they offer an open, generous, honest, and loving friendship. Friendship helps teens discover themselves. They learn from each other.
