Page 4: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

1. Product Identity and Definition o  A case of mistaken identity?

n  Customers don’t … o  always understand nutritional differences among ethanol by-products o  always know what they are going to get

o  A few sellers …

n  misrepresent quality and nutrient specifications

n  blend DDGS with other ingredients

o  AAFCO definitions need to be revised n  15. Brewer’s products

o  e.g. brewer’s dried grains

n  27. Distiller’s products o  e.g. distiller’s dried grains with solubles

n  48. Maize o  e.g. corn gluten feed, corn gluten meal

Page 5: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

Product Flowability q  Particle size is sometimes too fine

q  Difficult and costly to pellet

q  Minimal cooling or “curing” time before loading

q  Extensive damage to trucks and rail cars

Page 13: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

3. Lack of a Quality Grading System q  Difficult for buyers to differentiate quality

and price

q  Can be as much as $20-$30/ton price differential due to quality in the market

q  “What you want isn’t always what you get”

Page 14: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

4. Lack of Standardized Testing Procedures

o  Different labs may use different procedures n  variable results

o  No referee laboratories have been established

o  DDGS is unique n  use of ELISA tests for mycotoxins may give false

positive results

Page 15: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

5. Need for Quality Management and Certification

o  Paradigm shift toward improved DDGS quality and consistency

o  Many commercial feed mills are ISO Certified

o  EU – International Feed Ingredient Standard n  GMP Certification

o  Minnesota DDGS certification program was not accepted by the MN ethanol industry

Page 16: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

6. Transportation o  Railroads no longer allowing use of their cars to

transport DDGS n  DDGS marketers must use their own cars n  Small ethanol plants don’t produce enough DDGS in a

short time to use unit trains

o  Limited rail capabilities in Ontario

o  Concern over rail cars returning from Mexico

o  Transloaders in PNW refuse to handle DDGS due to flowability problems

Page 17: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

7. Need a High Degree of Research, Education, and Technical Support o  Additional research is needed to improve

DDGS acceptance in the feed industry

o  High degree of education and technical support is required in the market place

Page 18: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

8. Export Market Challenges n  Availability of consistent supply

n  Need system to directly connect customers to suppliers

n  Poor customer service n  Difficult to find reliable exporters

that market high quality DDGS

n  “Export market is a dumping ground” for low quality U.S. ingredients

n  Tariffs, definitions, and specifications

n  Regulatory concerns n  GMO

n  GMP certification

n  Antimicrobial residues

Page 19: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

9. No National Distiller’s By-Product Organization and Coordination

n  The U.S. ethanol industry is comprised of a few large, and many small independent ethanol plants.

n  No single national organization to coordinate and deal with by-product issues and opportunities

Page 20: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

Opportunities 1.  Develop a national DDGS organization

o  Assemble a national DDGS technical team o  develop new definitions for distiller’s by-products

o  develop standardized laboratory testing procedures

o  develop quality standards n  by-product vs co-product vs product

o  develop a voluntary national certification program

8 Million MT of DDGS Produced in the U.S. Would Disappear If… o  Every broiler, layer, and turkey

ate 0.10 lbs/day

OR o  Every beef steer, cow, and calf ate

4.8 lbs/day

OR o  Every dairy cow ate 8 lbs/day

OR o  Every hog ate 0.84 lbs/day

Page 24: Issues and Opportunities Related to the Production and Marketing … · Introduction ! Processes Used to Produce Ethanol " Dry-grind Fastest growing segment of the fuel ethanol industry

What Does the U.S. Ethanol Industry Need to Do? o  Determine the commitment to export DDGS

o  Correctly define its products

o  Know your products and how customers can optimize their use

o  Improve customer support and technical assistance

o  Fund research to support current domestic and export market development efforts

o  Implement quality standards to help customers differentiate among sources and prices

o  Implement a national DDGS certification program
