As I write this week’s contribution to the newsletter, I have just returned to my o�ce a�er being a judge at the Secondary “Spooktacular” Talent Show. It was a truly dazzling event with a stunning variety of impressive performances. We had four bands, a pianist, a dancer, two solo singers and one student playing the Dan Tranh.

Over thirty di�erent acts auditioned with Ms Woolgar over the past few weeks and these nine acts were successful in reaching the �nal. Congratulations to all the performers who entered the competition but particular congratulations to Kieu Linh who won the overall event and showed us what an amazing dancer she is! A special mention to Minh Phuong who won the KS3 Certi�cate by playing the traditional Dan Tranh to the background music of an Adele song – a real blend of traditional and modern music. Finally, the KS4 certi�cate went to a band called Polento who treated us to a great cover of ‘Walk like Rhianna’.

Quality events like this week’s show demonstrate two things:

• Our talented students • The success of our Performing Arts programme

The importance of a comprehensive and inclusive performing arts programme is vital to the success of any school. At BIS Hanoi, we are committed to further developing performing arts by exposing our students to excellent teaching, facilities and resources. In respect of this, we know that many of our students learn to play a musical instrument privately at home but it is also pleasing to note that over 70 students have individual instrumental music lessons using the school’s network of excellent music teachers. We now o�er lessons in:

• Violin• Cello• Drum• Flute• Guitar

I am convinced that, with the talent of BIS students and our commitment to performing arts, we will have more and more singers, bands, dancers, ensembles, and, eventually of course, a true BIS Hanoi orchestra.

Tôi viết bài cho số tuần báo tuần này khi vừa quay trở lại văn phòng sau khi làm Giám khảo cho cuộc thi Tài năng “Spooktacular” của học sinh khối Trung học. Đó thực sự là một sự kiện đầy ngạc nhiên với những tiết mục biểu diễn khác nhau vô cùng ấn tượng. Chương trình của chúng ta gồm có 4 ban nhạc, 1 nhạc công piano, 1 vũ công, 2 ca sỹ sô-lô và một nhạc công biểu diễn đàn Tranh. Vượt qua hơn 30 tiết mục đăng ký vòng loại với cô Woolgar trong một vài tuần qua, có9 tiết mục thành công nhất được vào vòng chung kết. Tôi xin chúc mừng tất cả những em học sinh đã đăng ký tham dự cuộc thi, và đặc biệt chúc mừng em Kiều Linh –là người chiến thắng tại cuộc thi này và em đã thể hiện cho chúng ta thấy em là một vũ công tài năng như thế nào! Tôi cũng không thể không nhắc đến Minh Phương – em đã được nhận bằng khen của Khối KS3 cho màn biểu diễn nhạc cụ truyền thống đàn Tranh trên nền nhạc một bài hát của ca sỹ nổi tiếng Adele – đây là một sự pha trộn rất hay giữa âm nhạc truyền thống và hiện đại. Cuối cùng, bằng khen của Khối KS4 được trao cho ban nhạc có tên gọi là Polento với tiết mục hát lại ca khúc “Walk like Rhianna” đầy thú vị.

Những sự kiện có chất lượng như cuộc thi âm nhạc diễn ra trong tuần này thể hiện hai điều:

• Các em học sinh tài năng của chúng ta• Thành công của chương trình học môn Nghệ thuật Biểu diễn

Tầm quan trọng của chương trình nghệ thuật biểu diễn toàn diện và trọn vẹn là rất cần thiết đối với sự thành công của bất kỳ một trường học nào. Tại Trường Quốc tế BIS Hà Nội, chúng tôi cam kết cao hơn với việc phát triển nghệ thuật biểu diễn bằng cách dẫn dắt các em học sinh với chất lượng dạy tốt, cơ sở vật chất và nguồn tài nguyên học tập. Về phương diện này, chúng tôi biết rằng rất nhiều em học sinh được học một loại nhạc cụ ở nhà nhưng tôi cũng rất vui khi có hơn 70 học sinh tham gia học nhạc cụ với đội ngũ giáo viên dạy nhạc chuyên nghiệp tại Trường. Những môn học nhạc cụ hiện đang có tại trường gồm:

• Vĩ cầm• Đàn viôlôngxen• Trống• Sáo• Đàn ghi-ta

Tôi tin rằng, tài năng của các em học sinh Trường BIS cùng cam kết của nhà trường dành cho môn nghệ thuật biểu diễn, chúng ta sẽ ngày càng có nhiều các ca sĩ, vũ công, dàn đồng diễn, và thậm chí là cả một dàn nhạc lớn của Trường Quốc tế BIS Hà Nội.

This exciting week started with a visit from Mr Giles Lever the British Ambassador to the Socialist Republic of Vietnam. The Ambassador was given a tour of the school and visited various classrooms. He then participated in a very interesting Q&A session with members of the Primary and Secondary School Councils. It was a very interesting 30 minute discussion which amongst other things explored the Ambassador’s role in Vietnam as well as that of the School Council at BIS Hanoi. We were extremely pleased to host the Ambassador on this visit and I am sure he will develop a positive and ongoing relationship with BIS Hanoi.

This weekend our students will compete in a swimming meet organised by our sister school BIS HCMC. This will be a great opportunity for BIS Hanoi swimmers to compete outside Hanoi. I would like to wish them all the best of luck.

Tuần lễ thú vị này được khởi đầu với chuyến thăm của Ngài Giles Lever – Đại sứ Anh Quốc tại Việt Nam. Đại sứ đã đi thăm khuôn viên Trường và ghé thăm các lớp học. Sau đó Đại sứ tham gia vào phần Hỏi và Đáp rất thú vị với các thành viên trong Hội đồng học sinh cấp Tiểu học và Trung học. Đó là một cuộc thảo luận kéo dài 30 phút, trong đó hai bên có dịp tìm hiểu lẫn nhau, các em học sinh được tìm hiểu về vai trò của Đại sứ tại Việt Nam, và Đại sứ được biết về vai trò của Hội đồng Học sinh tại Trường Quốc tế BIS Hà Nội. Chúng tôi rất vui khi được chào đón Ngài Đại sứ đến thăm Trường và tôi chắc chắn rằng Ngài Đại sứ sẽ phát triển mối quan hệ tích cực và bền chặt với Trường Quốc tế BIS Hà Nội.

Cuối tuần này các em học sinh sẽ tham gia cuộc thi bơi do Trường Quốc tế BIS TP.Hồ Chí Minh tổ chức. Đây sẽ là cơ hội lớn để các vận động viên bơi của Trường Quốc tế BIS Hà Nội thử sức thi đấu bên ngoài phạm vi Hà Nội. Tôi xin chúc các em mọi sự may mắn.

The half term holiday is now a distant memory but I hope families that had a holiday had an enjoyable week.

This first week back has carried on at the same busy pace as last half term. This week has been Water Awareness Week. Students have been learning about the importance of

drinking plenty of water and how a lack of water, dehydration, can a�ect your ability to perform properly in class. It is thought that even having 2% less water than you should can start to e�ect the way your brain works. Many thanks to Ms Wild for coordinating this important week.

The Talent Show is now in its third year and, as usual, the standard was very high. Ms Woolgar did a fantastic job of preparing the students and making sure things ran smoothly on the day. Congratulations to all competitors for taking part and to Tran Kieu Linh for her victory. Ms Stevenson’s Enterprise Club ran their �rst venture making sure we had snacks to enjoy during the show.

Although originally a traditional English Christian festival, we didn’t celebrate Halloween when I was a child but the march of globalisation means that we ‘celebrated’ today with our Mu�i Day. It did give our Charity and Community Society a chance to raise some funds for the two long term projects we are supporting. There were some interesting interpretations of Halloween but students enjoyed the day and learning in and out of classrooms continued.

This morning in assembly I talked about the importance of leadership roles and active participation in school life for applications to competitive universities. I launched a new way that students can develop their leadership skills; Subject Ambassadors. This, along with being a Student Council Representative or House Captain and our wide ranging ECA programme gives students an excellent opportunity to develop key skills alongside their outstanding results in the classroom.

I hope you enjoy reading the Dalat Expedition report below. Year 9 are o� to Sapa on Monday night. More news on that trip next week.

Kỳ nghỉ giữa Kỳ đã trôi qua nhưng tôi hy vọng các gia đình đã đi nghỉ có một tuần đáng nhớ.

Tuần đầu tiên quay trở lại trường vẫn giữ nguyên nhịp bận rộn của nửa Kì trước. Đây là Tuần lễ Nhận thức về Nước. Các em học sinh đã được học về sự quan trọng của việc uống nhiều nước và biết được tác hại gây ra của việc cung cấp thiếu nước sẽ ảnh hưởng thế nào đến các hoạt động trên lớp. Chỉ cần thiếu đi 2% so với lượng nước cần có cũng có thể làm ảnh hưởng tới việc hoạt động của não bộ. Rất cám ơn cô Wild đã đứng ra tổ chức tuần lễ quan trọng này.

Chương trình thi Biểu diễn Tài năng đã bước sang năm thứ 3 và như thường lệ chương trình này đặt tiêu chuẩn rất cao. Cô Wool-gar đã hoàn thành suất sắc trong việc chuẩn bị phần thi cho các em học sinh cũng như đảm bảo chương trình diễn ra suôn sẻ. Xin chúc mừng tất cả các thí sinh tham gia, và đặc biệtchúc mừng em Trần Kiều Linh đã giành chiến thắng. Nhóm Kinh doanh của cô Stevenson đã có buổi kinh doanh đầu tiên, đảm bảo cho chúng tôi có đủ đồ ăn nhẹ trong thời gian diễn ra chương trình.

Dù vốn là một ngày lễ truyền thống của những người theo đạo nước Anh, khi còn bé chúng tôi cũng không tổ chức lễ hội Halloween. Tuy nhiên với sự toàn cầu hóa nên chúng tôi tổ chức ngày hôm nay là ngày lễ Không mặc đồng phục. Điều này giúp nhóm Từ thiện và Hoạt Động Cộng Đồng xây dựng thêm quỹ cho những chiến dịch dài hạn mà chúng tôi đang hỗ trợ. Có nhiều cách giải thích khác nhau về ngày Halloween nhưng các em học sinh đều đã có một ngày rất vui vẻ và học tập được nhiều điều cả trong và ngoài lớp học.

Trong chương trình sinh hoạt sáng nay, tôi đã nói về tầm quan trọng của vai trò lãnh đạo và sự chủ động tham gia vào các hoạt động của trường trong việc ứng tuyển vào các trường Đại học tốt. Tôi đã tạo ra một cơ hội mới để các em có thể phát huy khả năng lãnh đạo của mình: Đại sứ cho môn học. Vị trí này, cùng với đại diện Hội Đồng Học Sinh, Đội trưởng Đội nhà và rất nhiều các hoạt động ngoại khóa ECA sẽ giúp các em học sinh có cơ hội tuyệt vời để phát triển kĩ năng cùng với kết quả học tập cao trên lớp.

Tôi hy vọng quý vị sẽ thích bài về chuyến đi Đà Lạt dưới đây. Các em học sinh Khối 9 sẽ khởi hành đi Sapa vào tối thứ Hai tới. Tuần sau sẽ có nhiều thông tin hơn về chuyến đi này.

You will have read earlier in this newsletter about the visit on Monday of the British Ambassador, Mr. Giles Lever. It was a great honour to show him around the school and visit several lessons with him. Mr. Lever commented on how engaged the children were in their learning and what a quiet, purposeful atmosphere there was in the

lessons he observed.

A highlight of the morning was the meeting that took place between Mr. Lever and selected members of the Secondary and Primary School Councils. The children had been preparing for this meeting with Ms. Tong and Ms. Elliott before the half term break and I was so impressed with the level of thought they had put into it. Questions they asked included ‘How do you get selected to become an Ambassador?’, ‘How many British Embassies are there around the world?’ and ‘Do you have to make a lot of decisions in your job?’ Mr. Lever answered them all fully and the children were 100% focused on the discussion.

The Primary School Council members take their roles very seriously and do an excellent job of both representing the school in situations like this and also in voicing the thoughts of the student body with school leaders on matters of concern to them. Recent discussions have ranged from allowing dedicated time for girls to use the football �eld during breaks, to a request for a vending machine and iPads for all Primary students. Each issue is discussed in a mature and balanced way.

The PSC also take on a lot of responsibility for the Primary school’s charitable work. It is one matter to raise money during events such as today’s Halloween mu�i day, but it is quite another to decide on the best way to use the funds raised to support those in need. So far we have supported the Bear Sanctuary and the Rice Scholarship programme. I know the PSC will be busy exploring options over the coming weeks and sharing these with their classmates to decide on the most worthy causes to focus on.

Trong các bài viết trước ở tuần báo này, Quý vị đã được đọc về chuyến thăm vào hôm thứ Hai của Ngài Đại sứ Anh Quốc tại Việt Nam, ông Giles Lever. Thật là vinh dự được cùng ông đi thăm quan quanh trường và dự giờ một số tiết học. Ông Lever đã nhận xét các em học sinh rất chăm chú học tập; các giờ học trật tự và hiệu quả.

Điểm nổi bật của buổi sáng là cuộc họp giữa ông Lever và các thành viên Hội đồng học sinh khối Trung học và khối Tiểu học. Các em đã cùng cô Tong và cô Elliott chuẩn bị cho cuộc họp này từ trước kỳ nghỉ giữa Kỳ và tôi đã rất ấn tượng với khả năng suy nghĩ mà các em thể hiện trong cuộc họp. Các câu hỏi của các em bao gồm: ‘Ông đã được chọn để trở thành Đại sứ như thế nào?’, ‘Có bao nhiêu Đại sứ quán Anh trên thế giới?’ và ‘Trong công việc của mình ông có phải đưa ra nhiều quyết định không?’ Ông Lever đã trả lời tất cả các em và 100% các em đã tập trung vào cuộc thảo luận.

Các thành viên Hội đồng học sinh khối Tiểu học đã đảm nhiệm tốt vai trò đại diện cho nhà trường trong những dịp như thế này và đại diện cho các em học sinh nói lên tiếng nói của mình với Ban Giám Hiệu về những vấn đề liên quan đến các em. Các cuộc thảo luận gần đây đã bàn về việc sân bóng trong giờ giải lao cũng nên dành cho cả các bạn nữ, đề xuất máy bán hàng ăn nhẹ tự động và iPad cho tất cả các em học sinh khối Tiểu học. Mỗi vẫn đề đều đã được thảo luận một cách chín chắn và công bằng.

Hội đồng học sinh cũng đảm nhận nhiều trách nhiệm cho công việc từ thiện của khối Tiểu học. Đó là vấn đề quyên góp tiền trong các sự kiện như Lễ hội Halloween ngày hôm nay, nhưng một việc khác của Hội đó là tìm cách sử dụng tốt nhất số tiền từ thiện đó như thế nào . Trước đó, Hội đồng đã hỗ trợ Khu bảo tồn Gấu và các Chương trình Học bổng. Tôi biết Hội đồng học sinh sẽ bận rộn tìm ra các phương án trong vài tuần tới và chia sẻ chúng với các bạn trong lớp để quyết định những nơi xứng đáng nhất để trao từ thiện.

FINE DINING

For the second year running Year 10 and 12P went to Dalat for their annual expedition. The purpose was to try new activities, talk to new people, become more independent, conquer fears such as heights, camp in tents and perhaps even go 4 days without a mobile phone. For some, the latter is possibly the most di�cult particularly for those who su�er with

Nomophobia (fear of being away from their phone) as we voluntarily took SIM cards from all of our students. Although this does sound mean, it forced the issue of everyone talking to other people and being more social rather than just looking at a screen. This is something that we are keen to promote generally around BIS. Believe it or not, the world keeps spinning without wi�!!

With reports of bad weather in the south, we headed to Noi Bai with 55 students and 7 members of sta�. Much to our surprise, a�er a smooth check-in and �ight we arrived in the Dalat sunshine. A�er a quick bus ride we were transported by long boat to our destination of Nam Qua campsite, a beautiful and remote manmade island where we would stay for the next two nights. Students were given a brie�ng and a�er being allowed time to familiarise themselves with the area were served a well-deserved group dinner cooked with just a generator for fuel and 2 hours of electricity. I have to say, our students, given what they may be used to, adapted incredibly well to their new surroundings.

Đây là năm thứ 2 nhà trường tổ chức cho Lớp 10 và Lớp 12P đi Đà Lạt trong chương trình dã ngoại hàng năm. Mục đích của chuyến đi là để thử nghiệm các hoạt động mới, trò chuyện với những người mới, trở nên tự tin hơn, vượt qua những nỗi sợ hãi như độ cao, cắm trại ngủ lều và có lẽ cả việc thử sống 4 ngày không có điện thoại di động. Đối với một số em, điều cuối cùng có lẽ chính là việc khó khăn nhất, đặc biệt với những người mắc chứng Nomophobia (sợ khi phải tách xa chiếc điện thoại) chúng tôi thu hết sim điện thoại của các em. Mặc dù điều này nghe có vẻ không tốt nhưng nó buộc các em phải nói chuyện với mọi người và giao tiếp nhiều hơn là chỉ tập trung vào màn hình điện thoại. Đây cũng là điều chúng tôi rất muốn phát triển trong cộng đồng Trường Quốc tế BIS. Dù có tin hay không thì nếu không có wi�, trái đất vẫn quay.

Với dự báo thời không tốt ở khu vực phía Nam, chúng tôi vẫn tới sân bay Nội Bài cùng 55 học sinh và 7 nhân viên trong đoàn. Chúng tôi đã rất ngạc nhiên khi sau một chuyến bay tốt đẹp, chúng tôi được nhìn thấy ánh nắng của Đà Lạt. Sau chuyến đi ngắn bằng xe buýt, chúng tôi đi thuyền di chuyển tới khu cắm trại Nam Qua, một đảo nhân tạo rất đẹp và xa mà chúng tôi sẽ ở trong 2 ngày tiếp theo. Các em học sinh được phổ biến thông tin và có thời gian để làm quen với địa hình khu vực. Sau đó các em ăn bữa tối được nấu bằng máy phát điện chạy bằng nhiên liệu và điện dùng chỉ trong vòng 2 tiếng. Tôi phải nói rằng các em học sinh đã thích nghi rất tốt với môi trường mới xung quanh.

This pattern of adapting and throwing themselves into their new found lives was great to see. Through the trip each student continually pushed themselves, especially with heights and trusting each other, and the equipment that they were using. Stepping back and watching our students in an environment very unfamiliar to them and seeing them beginning to thrive was fantastic. It was also lovely to see how supportive they were of each other and how they encouraged everyone through their di�culties. Two of our number were brand new to BIS and all new students to BIS were

included; we really do have a friendly and caring group of students. The activities included climbing to the top of a 9m pole and jumping to a bar (leap of faith), running across a horizontal ladder (Monkey ladder), a zip line across a lake, team building games, minority dancing, roasting marshmallows over a bonfire and raft building. These tired everyone enough that we had some pretty decent sleep in our luxury forest accommodation. At the end of our time at Nam Qua we moved into Dalat itself for a well-earned wash and bu�et dinner which ended in some quite surreal a�er dinner karaoke which was possibly the highlight to the whole trip. A�er a good sleep we headed into Dalat for our last day of museums, waterfalls, mountain ‘roller coasters’ and cable car rides to pagodas. All of a sudden we were on a bus back to the airport where SIM cards were returned and life back on the World Wide Web resumed. When we returned to Noi Bai airport we were met by around half of our parents with the others awaiting us at BIS.

For me the sign of a successful trip is one that ful�lls its aims which I believe we did, but also the fact that we le� with a group of 62 and returned with a group of 62 happy people, although they were a little more tired than when we started. This could not have happened without Phat Tires who provided our activities, the students who involved themselves completely and the dedication of the sta� who went and who I am truly grateful to for their professionalism throughout. I sincerely hope the students enjoyed it as much as the sta� and also parents who had a little more time o� than usual.

Students were given a brie�ng and a�er being allowed time to familiarise themselves with the area were served a well-deserved group dinner cooked with just a generator for fuel and 2 hours of electricity. I have to say, our students, given what they may be used to, adapted incredibly well to their new surroundings.

This pattern of adapting and throwing themselves into their new found lives was great to see. Through the trip each student continually pushed themselves, especially with heights and trusting each other, and the equipment that they were using. Stepping back and watching our students in an environment very unfamiliar to them and seeing them beginning to thrive was fantastic. It was also lovely to see how supportive they were of each other and how they encouraged everyone through their di�culties. Two of our number were brand new to BIS and all new students to BIS were

included; we really do have a friendly and caring group of students. The activities included climbing to the top of a 9m pole and jumping to a bar (leap of faith), running across a horizontal ladder (Monkey ladder), a zip line across a lake, team building games, minority dancing, roasting marshmallows over a bonfire and raft building. These tired everyone enough that we had some pretty decent sleep in our luxury forest accommodation. At the end of our time at Nam Qua we moved into Dalat itself for a well-earned wash and bu�et dinner which ended in some quite surreal a�er dinner karaoke which was possibly the highlight to the whole trip. A�er a good sleep we headed into Dalat for our last day of museums, waterfalls, mountain ‘roller coasters’ and cable car rides to pagodas. All of a sudden we were on a bus back to the airport where SIM cards were returned and life back on the World Wide Web resumed. When we returned to Noi Bai airport we were met by around half of our parents with the others awaiting us at BIS.

For me the sign of a successful trip is one that ful�lls its aims which I believe we did, but also the fact that we le� with a group of 62 and returned with a group of 62 happy people, although they were a little more tired than when we started. This could not have happened without Phat Tires who provided our activities, the students who involved themselves completely and the dedication of the sta� who went and who I am truly grateful to for their professionalism throughout. I sincerely hope the students enjoyed it as much as the sta� and also parents who had a little more time o� than usual.

Thật vui khi được quan sát các em hòa nhập với cuộc sống mới. Qua chuyến dã ngoại, mỗi em học sinh đều không ngừng nỗ lực thúc đẩy bản thân, đặc biệt với sự tin tưởng lẫn nhau và tin tưởng vào những trang thiết bị chúng tôi đang sử dụng. Đứng từ sau và nhìn các em bắt đầu hòa mình vào với môi trường mới thật là một điều thú vị. Tôi cũng rất vui khi được nhìn thấy các em đã hỗ trợ lẫn nhau như thế nào, động viên nhau ra sao trong những hoàn cảnh khó khăn. Trong đoàn có 2 em là học sinh mới của trường và các em đều tham gia vào các hoạt động của đoàn, chúng tôi thực sự có những em học sinh rất thân thiện và biết quan tâm đến người khác. Các hoat động bao gồm leo lên một chiếc cột cao 9 mét và nhảy bám vào một thanh gỗ (đu dây), chạy trên những bậc thang ngang (thang Monkey), đu dậy dọc qua hồ, các trò chơi theo đội, nhảy điệu nhảy của dân tộc thiểu số, nướng kẹo dẻo trong đêm lửa trại và kết bè nứa. Những hoạt động này đủ khiến tất cả mọi người mệt nhoài để sau đó được nghỉ ngơi trong những khu ở tiện nghi trong rừng. Sau thời gian ở khu Nam Qua, chúng tôi di chuyển tới Đà Lạt, được tắm rửa và ăn bữa tối tự chọn vô cùng hào hứng. Bữa tối kết thúc bằng một chương trình hát karaoke khá đặc biệt và có lẽ đây cũng là điểm nhấn của toàn bộ chuyến đi này. Sau giấc ngủ ngon, chúng tôi cùng di chuyển tới một số địa danh của Đà Lạt trong ngày cuối cùng với các bảo tàng, thác nước, núi ‘đu quay’ và đi cáp treo tới chùa. Khi ra ô tô để đi về sân bay, các em học sinh nhận lại sim điện thoại và cuộc sống quay trở lại với các trang mạng được tiếp tục. Khi về tới sân bay Nội Bài, chúng tôi được gặp một nửa số Phụ huynh của các em, những Phụ huynh còn lại thì đợi đón con tại trường.

Đối với tôi, điểm thành công của chuyến đi là đã hoàn thành được những mục tiêu đã đề ra mà tôi tin chắc chúng tôi đã làm rất tốt. Cùng với đó là thực tế chúng tôi xuất phát với đoàn 62 người và quay về với 62 người với tâm trạng vui vẻ dù có hơi mệt mỏi hơn so với lúc xuất phát. Chuyến đi sẽ không thể thành công nếu thiếu đi sự giúp đỡ tổ chức các hoạt động của công ty Phat Tires, với sự nhiệt tình của tất cả các em học sinh tham gia, sự cống hiến của toàn bộ nhân viên mà tôi vô cùng biết ơn về sự chuyên nghiệp của họ trong suốt chuyến đi này. Tôi hy vọng các em học sinh cũng yêu thích chuyến đi này như những nhân viên đi cùng, và các quý vị Phụ huynh cũng đã có một khoảng thời gian ngắn thư thái hơn thường ngày.
