Therefore we also, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us lay aside every weight, and the sin which so easily ensnares us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith....—Hebrews 12:1-2

Is Satan giving you a hard time in your life of faith-in the Christian race you are running? Expect it if you are a believing child of God!

Satan hates your God. He hates Jesus Christ. He hates your faith. You should be aware of the devil’s evil intentions. He wants you to lose the victor’s crown in the race you have entered by faith through grace....

When by faith we have entered this lifelong spiritual course, the Holy Spirit whispers, “Do you truly want to be among the victors in this discipline?” When we breathe our “Yes! Yes!” He whispers of ways that will aid us and carry us to certain victory.

The Spirit tells us to throw off everything that would hinder us in the race. He tells us to be aware of the little sins and errors that could divert us from the will of God as we run.

But here is the important thing: He tells us to keep our eyes on Jesus, because He alone is our pacesetter and victorious example. Jesus, Author of our Faith, 75-76.

“Father, let me see Jesus this morning. Then go with me today and help me to keep my eyes fixed on Him. I’m going to encounter all kinds of diversions; I’ll look to You to keep my eyes and heart focused on my ‘pacesetter and victorious example.’ Amen.”

President Barack Obama took the oath of office using two Bible this past week. One was the personal Bible of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. The second was the Bible used by President Abraham Lincoln. He could not have made two better choices.

President Lincoln, like President Obama, a native of Illinois worked to defeat the Confederacy during the War Between the States. He also was an advocate for abolition of slavery. Because of that, people of color in this country and those who believe in human equality, owe much to Lincoln.

The decision to use the Bible of Dr. Martin Luther King was of equal significance. Dr. King is perhaps the most important simple of justice and racially progress in the history of our country. No doubt, President Obama was inspired, as a young man, while studying the life of Dr. King.

Now that President Obama has taken the oath of office for his second term, the real work begins. Americans are expecting serious progress in the area of employment, immigration, the eradication of poverty and the promulgation of increase diversity at the highest levels of government and business.

President Obama has inspired an entire generation of people to once again get involved in politics. He has created a coalition of women, racial minorities, progressive and independents who have decided that they want to participate in the direction of their government.

The decision to ask the more affluent among us to pay more income taxes was significant. People who have benefited from a society should pay their fair price to keep that society alive. Can you imagine what the national spirit level would have been if Mitt Romney had defeated President Obama last November. Thank God that did not happen.

The second time around

Throw off Hindrances

There are nearly two billion overweight and obese people in the world today.

Their conditions lead to severe diseases such as diabetes, a disease that if not controlled can lead to death. The healthcare costs for obesity in American alone are more than $150 billion each year.

According to the World Health Organization, obesity is responsible for the deaths of 2.8 million people around the world each year.

In this country we are not winning the disease

against fat. Our diets are out of control, our children are eating French fries for breakfast and our emergency rooms are packed with people who are suffering from illnesses that can be prevented simply by people changing their eating habits.

The foods that we eat contain too much salt and sugar. We have got to stop eating foods because they taste good or simply because our mother and fathers ate them. Nutritinists have been telling us for decades that they foods that we are consuming today do not contain the necessary nutrients that our bodies need to remain healthy. We sit at our dinner tables and are consuming foods that are literally killing us.

Our children are not getting enough exercise. Parents and school officials must do all that they can to ensure that our children receive proper exercise. Sitting at their desks all day long and eating the foods that proliferate in school cafeterias is not a good strategy for wellness.

We must also get behind First Lady Michelle Obama’s exercise program for young children. We must get our children moving. What good are they if they have healthy brains but woeful bodies? Parents know what their children should be eating. The increased consumption of bad foods is leading to a situation that does not bode well for any of us.

WORDS OF WISDOM

“You are never too old to set another goal or to dream a new dream.” William Blair

PRAYERCLOSET

By Rev. Clarence Henderson

I am convinced and convicted that the safest place in the whole wide whole is in the Will of God.  There is no finer greater prayer we can pray than “Thy will be done”. It is the prayer beyond all other prayers which guarantees’ the richest and best of life for us.  Therefore, let us pray it in all three of its aspects.1.            Thy will be done in the sense of the completion of God’s Purpose in the Earth. 2.       Thy will be done in me, that my own life purpose may be accomplished. 3.            Thy will be done through me , that I may be a channel of blessing to others and used by God to accomplish His purpose.

Therefore, “We pray” let thy will be done on earth as it is in Heaven.”

MINISTER OF THE WEEK

CHURCH WOMAN OF THE WEEK

Dear Dr. Hollie,

My husband and I were married for three years and then we got a divorce because we just could not get along and I believed he was cheating. There were other issues as well that we were never able to work out. However, during our marriage we tried, unsuccessfully, to have a baby. It’s been a year since our divorce; I’ve moved on and am very happy. However, a few months ago, we were both at a mutual friend’s wedding. We got to talking and, with lots of champagne in our systems, ended up going to bed together. Now, I am pregnant! Go figure! I am happy in my life without him, and have no plans on getting back together.

I don’t want to be connected to him in any way, so I’m thinking seriously about not even telling him that I am pregnant. I can raise this baby on my own, and maybe he can go on and find someone else to have a child with. I just think it would be for the best. I really don’t see what the problem is, but I have friends and family that tell me I shouldn’t take this route. Could you please tell me what you think and why?

Divorced and PregnantDear Pregnant, I am shocked and disappointed that you think that you can just take a child and claim independent ownership of it. I think that you have a moral responsibility, if nothing else, to inform your ex-husband that he is going to be a father. What the two of you decide to do after that will strictly become your decision. Whatever you do, I suggest that in some way you allow him to help you parent this child.

“But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord: I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.”

Last year we looked at some attitudes we need to have when we are facing difficulty. We reconsidered the fact that the problem is not always the problem. The problem is our attitude, or our focus, about our problems. We need to focus on our great High Priest, Jesus, who is able to help us successfully confront any problem.

Last year we gave attention to our minds. Today we want to give attention to our hearts. Ever sensed that you needed what we often call a change of heart? You know some things in your mind but brain function is not enough.

I want to approach Hebrews chapter 8” by talking about “What to Do When I Need a Change of Heart.”

It is one thing to change your mind what you are going to think about its another to have a change of heart. And both these things can be needed when we are discouraged.

It is not that God does not care. It is that our minds and hearts need changing. That is why this week’s key verse is Hebrews 8:10:

“But this is the new covenant I will make with the people of Israel on that day, says the Lord. I will put my laws in their minds, and I will write them on their hearts.”

What we need is a supernatural act of God. This is a God-thing. There are so many times when I try to do something naturally that only comes supernaturally. I need to ascend to a higher plane.

Personally, I have often faced this in mylife. I try to do stuff for God by my own strength. Ain’t gonna happen. Even writing here teaching the Scriptures to you takes God giving me the heart to do it. I cannot do it on my own. Do you have anything like that in your life? A relationship? A job? Finances? Forgiving someone?

Here is the main point: We have a High Priest who sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven. Circle “sat down.” Jesus “sat down” because He was finished. He “sat down in the place of honor beside the throne of the majestic God in heaven” because he was king as well as priest.

The Old Testament priest never sat down in the tabernacle or Temple because he was never finished. There he ministers in the heavenly Tabernacle the true place of worship that was built by

the Lord and not by human hands. And since every high priest is

required to offer gifts and sacrifices, our High Priest must make an offering, too. 4 If he were here on earth, he would not even be a priest, since there already are priests who offer the gifts required by the law. 5 They serve in a system of worship that is only a copy, a shadow of the real one in heaven. For when Moses was getting ready to build the Tabernacle, God gave him this warning: “Be sure that you make everything according to the pattern I have shown you here on the mountain.”

6 But now Jesus, our High Priest, has been given a ministry that is far superior to the old priesthood, for he is the one who mediates for us a far better covenant with God, based on better promises.

Thank You from the National Multicultural Western Heritage Museum to all who supported the Cowboys of Color Rodeo at the Fort Worth Stock Show. The January 21st show was sold out with a crowd of more than 5,700 at the Will Rogers Memorial Coliseum.

Seven-time Professional Rodeo Association tie-down roping world champion Fred Whitfield participated in the rodeo as well as signed autographs for adoring fans. Whitfield will be honored at the museum’s Hall of Fame Induction Banquet on July 26, 2013.

We are very proud of the youth who participated in programs honoring Dr. King at various schools, churches, and community activities across the Fort Worth-Dallas Metroplex.

One young lady in particular I wish to congratulate with special pride is my great-niece Aolani Hill who attends Wilmer-Hutchins Elementary. Aolani participated and placed second in the 21st Annual Gardere MLK Jr. Oratory Competition.

The oratory competition highlights the community’s rich diversity while encouraging the writing and presentation skills of elementary school students. It also helps educate our youngest generation about the legacy of Dr. King’s life and work.

This year’s competition topic was “If you could talk directly to Dr. King about your dream for our future, what would you tell him?”

Over two hundred students representing schools across Dallas ISD participated in the 2013 competition. She is the loving daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Kirdric and Eve Hill and the proud big sister of baby brother Kaeson Hill. Aolani

hopes to be a lawyer one day.

I also wish to congratulate Chinelo King (John Neely Bryan Elementary) who placed first and Leah Wizeman (Harry C. Withers Elementary) who placed third.

We are fortunate to have students with compassionate hearts for justice and equality for

all.

Dallas’ Wilson wins Stellar Award(Arlington, Texas)—The host of the Dallas-based, nationally

syndicated radio show, "Inside Gospel with Frankie Wilson," has been honored with a prestigious 'Stellar Award' given to the best performers in the Gospel music industry.

This past weekend, Wilson's program won the award for "National Radio of the Year."

The 31-year old Dallas native began his work as a syndicated radio personality after his 7th year working at Mortenson Broadcasting’s KHVN-970am and KGGR-1040am.

Wilson said: "As an extension of the church we [radio] should reflect the “true church” which is diversified in sound, culture, age, and approach. But at the same time provide focus to one message, with one purpose, for one God. I appreciate the Stellar Awards for recognizing that, and I thank God for trusting me with this ministry."

Frankie Wilson's "Inside Gospel" show premiered in November of 2011. Currently, the program airs on terrestrial radio stations in 5 U-S markets, and overseas across several continents. It can be found on the internet at: http://InsideGospelOnline.com.

The winning of the 'Stellar Award' further legitimizes the claim of many that Frankie Wilson is "one of the most exciting personalities in Gospel radio."

Monday, January 21, 2013 is a day we will all remember. It was the inauguration day of President Barack H Obama and the day we honored the life and work of Civil Rights Activist Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. It is amazing that the work of Dr. King that set the stage that paved the way for a black man to be president. It took Dr. King’s life, his work that opened the eyes of the world that showed we are all equal and not beneath any other race and his death that allowed us the opportunity to enjoy the freedoms we have. If it had not been for Dr King one cannot say that we would see a black man in the white house. How ironic, a black man in the white house.

As the Elite News family, staff and volunteers planned and worked to host the 27th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival we

were torn between focusing on the honoring of our 57th Presidential Inauguration and hosting the Parade and Festival. What a better way to celebrate them both with a successful Parade and Festival here in Dallas and an Inauguration in Washington DC.

The day started out with a breakfast introducing our Marshals and Sponsors, Taco Cabana, Fiesta Markets, Marines, Reliant Energy and Wells Fargo that set the stage for the rest of the day. The Parade showcased local high school bands, businesses, churches, car clubs and many others and was followed with a Festival full of vendors selling their products, providing valuable services for our community, great food and entertainment. Oh what a day!!!

Out in Washington the

nation watched as our 57th President graced us with the dignity and swagger that only Barack Obama could. Over the last four years we watched him mature from the senator from Illinois to a man who holds his own as the first black president. He knows that the accomplishments he has already completed, Obama Care, ending of the Middle Eastern war, the end to the Oussama ben Laden reign and the turning around of the US economy in the first four years of his administration to more success in his second term of office.

As we close out the planning of the 27th Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival we too look forward to the 28th Martin Luther King Jr. Parade and Festival. Thank you all who supported us and those who came out and attended the event.

From Inauguration to Parade It Was a Great Day

One of Dallas own has come up with a historical ideal the Presidential Flag, something all of America can be proud to say one of our Black Men has his head on straight and is headed in the right direction looking to the future.

Mr. West Vernon put his last dime into action on a idea he had and believed in and today it is becoming a success with the help of a few prominent local leaders we can take this to another level,as we educate the young and remind the elderly we do have Hope today.

For those of you who have questions about this flag, it will not be in competition with Old

Glory so you can put

that to rest, this will only help educate others.

We as a country still do not think we have intellingent people of color who have the mindset to even think on this level, all we

need is a chance in life to show we can do all things with Gods blessing.

It has been stated all we can do is sing dance and play sports well the

show is over and we are doing things to show we have minds that are capable of producing many thing that are useful in to day market.

This project has been presented to some well

to do people andsome of them just do not get what it is about , this magnitude of operation requires long hours, plenty of research a substantianl amount of

cash and a little trust in a few people, Mr West has a small staff at this time and is looking to add many more to help promote this piece of history to the fullist, with all that is scheduled for Monday January 21, 2013 this should be the biggest day ever in American, the Martin Luther King Jr. parade in Dallas and President Barack Obama beingsworn in for the second term in Washington.

President George Bush has seen the Presidential Flag and he gives Mr. West thumbs up and best wishes, so if the Bushes like it why not join in and help promote Black History.

A Pessimist.... A person who says that O is the last letter of the word Zero, instead of the first letter in the word OPPORTUNITY !!!!!!

Ray Lewis has said this would be his last and final season in the NFL. Lewis suffered what several people felt was a season ending injury. Lewis sat out a few games and then decided he was going to play again. Injury and all Ray Lewis the inspirational leader of the Baltimore Raven’s didn’t just play, he led his team to this years Super Bowl. Ray Lewis is a great linebacker and an even greater leader. Let me tell you who Ray Lewis is:

Ray Lewis was drafted by the Ravens in 1996, he has played his entire career for the team. Lewis is the last player remaining from the Ravens’ inaugural season. He has

been selected to 13 Pro Bowls and been named AP All-Pro 10 times. Lewis won the NFL Defensive Player of the Year in 2000 and 2003. Lewis is only the 6th player in NFL history to win the award multiple times. Lewis was the second linebacker to win the Super Bowl Most Valuable Player Award and the first to win the award on the winning Super Bowl team.

Lewis became somewhat infamous for his involvement in a fight in January 2000. The fight resulted in an indictment on murder and aggravated-assault charges. In a plea agreement he pled guilty to obstruction of justice in exchange for testimony against two other defendants. This became Ray Lewis’s testimony.

Lewis was different after that. He became a different type of leader after that incident in 2000.

But where did Lewis become the player he is today?

As a freshman at the University of Miami, Lewis was an immediate contributor and became a starter for the Hurricanes’ in the final five game of his freshman year. Lewis had 81 tackles, 2 sacks, 2 tackles for loss and 4 pass deflections and was named freshman All-American. In his second season at Miami Lewis earned first-team All-American honors and was also first team All-Big East. Lewis led the Big- East with 153 tackles and had 9 tackles for loss,2 sacks and 1 interception. During this season the Hurricanes had the nations top ranked defensive unit and were ranked no. 6 in the

nation. Lewis led the Big East in tackles in his final two seasons and had the most tackles in Hurricane history despite playing only 3 seasons. After the 1995 season, Lewis decided to forego his final year of college football and enter the NFL draft. Ray was selected in the first round by the Baltimore Ravens with the 26th overall pick. Lewis also has an undergraduate degree in Arts and Science.

Throughout his career, Ray Lewis had built a reputation as a leader and intimidating force at middle linebacker. Lewis has led the Ravens team in tackles 12 of his 14 seasons. The Ravens did not allow a single 100 yard rusher in 51 consecutive games from 1998 through 2001. Lewis’s image has recovered since the murder allegation, and today he is considered one of the most dominant linebackers in the history of the NFL.

Ray Lewis is a Christian and often tells the world about his faith while during interviews and press conferences. His commitment to his faith was featured in a Sports Illustrated cover story in 2006.

Ray Lewis is a special person. He let’s everybody know that he will give his all to his team and his teammates. But most of all Ray Lewis let’s everybody know that all of his success in life come from Almighty God!!!

Welcome to Ministers Listing Ft. Worth Edition

By Lorie Blair Friday night the Arlington Highlands is

a booming local social site. Valet parking stands erect in front of the most popular social locations and parking is at a premium. If you aren’t there early be prepared to walk a bit, pay for valet of get frustrated and leave.

I had not been to the Highlands on a weekend night for a while and on this visit there was a new eatery, Bommer Jacks Grill & Bar. The place was packed and there was an hour wait so I moved on until Saturday afternoon. I thought it has to be good food to have so many people willing to wait an hour to get a seat. Ha I am not one of those who will wait that long. LOL!!!

Saturday the place was still busy but not packed. Even in the cool weather there were those sitting outside under the heat lamps. Inside there is a section that is suitable for family seating that is away from the bar but it is a small area and of course there is the bar area.

The specialty here is the burgers, libations and televisions galore all on sports channels. Funny all the sports and not a one of the televisions had volume nor closed caption. So what is the point of the televisions if you get no benefits of what is going on?

You can get salads if you like but my choice was the Jalapeno Ranch Burger with fried mushrooms; I substituted the fries for the fried mushrooms. The fried mushrooms were an awesome choice and dipping them

in the chipotle ranch dressing was a perfect paring.

The Jalapeno Ranch Burger is topped with Boomer Chips (fried jalapeno slices with the same coating as the fried mushrooms), cheddar cheese and dressed with chipotle ranch dressing. Of course you get the standard lettuce, tomato, onion and pickles. The burger is cooked to your specifications. I

like mine medium well, done but not dry and it too was perfectly prepared. I loved that you can determine how hot you like this burger by removing the Bommer Chips to suite your taste. I removed about half of them for a Bite but not so hot you can’t enjoy it.

Now I am from the old school of service where hair is tied up and not hanging so I was a little concerned when most of the servers had long hair that was flowing… I was lucky that my server had her hair in a nice neat ponytail. Also of concerned for me is that there are pictures of tea sitting somewhere in the open and brought to the table for refills. Hello, it is the cold and flu season. Come on people open containers sitting in the open is a wonderful place for germs to breed.

The food is wonderful, the service was great and the price is modest; perfect choice. I look forward to the few bugs to be worked out and that this new eatery stands firm because the Bite is well worth it.

Elder Anthony G. Tucker, Sr.

By Congresswoman Eddie Bernice Johnson

Anyone who witnessed the most recent Presidential Inauguration knows that America’s greatness is enhanced by the diversity of our communities, our workforces and our educational institutions. There are few nations in the world where people of different backgrounds, ethnic origins, religious beliefs and political persuasions have come together to build a great Democracy, one that is envied across the globe. When I first went to Congress

there were fifty-five women in the House of Representatives and seven women in the United States Senate. Today, there are seventy-eight women in the House and twenty in the Senate. Most political observers agree that our governance is better because of the new realities in Washington.Of course, there are those

among us who are weary of diversity. They must understand that it is not a burden, but a privilege. Our strength as a people is directly related to the tapestry of our culture. History has taught us that those who

stand in the way of change are swept away by the gigantic wave that accompanies progress. If you look at the professions

and industries that are at the heart of our progress you will find people who speak various languages, who pray to different Gods and who hold numerous political beliefs. We have learned that progress does not demand that we all believe the same things. It does require, however, that we are agreeable with one another even if we have major disagreements. In my years of public service

I have been able to accomplish many goals and objectives. Many of them have come about with the support of people who did not look like me, who did not believe what I believed and who were members of a different political party. We were able to work with

one another and understand our differences because we respected each other, and had a concern for the larger good. As a diverse nation we can move forward. I have always believed that the larger our collective tent, the greater the opportunities for all people.

Rollin with a Brotha

Welcome to the weekend, baaby! I love that a long holiday weekend leads to a short work week. Monday’s MLK Holiday festivities were awesome in combination with the President’s Inaugural! We finally got to hear the no holds barred, bold hopes of our President! He spoke on everything from climate change to immigration reform and he did it forcefully! What an incredibly looong day(up at 4 am til at least 9pm). No wonder he and Mrs. Obama only did two or 3 Inaugural parties or balls! Beyonce doing the National Anthem, live recorded or whatever was majestic! Alicia Keys, Stevie Wonder were also “fabu” to the max, lol. Mrs. Obama was smokin in that red dress, as she danced with The Prez! Jennifer Hudson’s rendition of Rev. Al Green’s classic “Let’s Stay Together “ was the bomb and it was good to find out why Jennifer and not the Rev. performed it! Turns out Rev. Green was unable to make it due to a previous commitment and totally signed off on J-Hud’s version! I have no idea what previous engagement would preclude you from singing at this event, but Rev. Al says he’ll be happy to sing the President’s favorite song at another time... Steve Harvey turned 56 this week and was reduced to tears by the producers of his talk show(Just renewed), when as a surprise, the couple that helped him when he had nothing was flown in! Turns out this white couple believed in Steve when he had a small carpet cleaning company in Cleveland, Ohio! Not only did they give his company contracts, but when Steve started his comedy career they put him on their travel account. Steve racked up 11,000 dollars in charges, as he traveled to get his thing going. Hats off to people who help others with no real rewards in sight for themselves. Imagine somebody running up a bill like that on your dime... How would you react??? Lol... Don’t answer that,lol...Keep hope alive! Things I could care less about this week : Lance Armstrong/ Manti Teo... I am just thru with the former Tour Di France champ and the Notre Dame Football player’s stories...Uggg! Many of you pick up The Elite News at your church... Please pray for healing between Jamie Foxx and his parents. As the story goes, Jamie was adopted and raised by his Grandmother, his parents young and overwhelmed gave him away. Well Jamie’s dad is on an oxygen machine daily and it seems Jamie’s hurt at being given away is keeping him away from his dying Dad. I only saw my dad 3 or 4 times in my life, learning who he “really” was only a few years ago. My dad died in 1984. Wish I’d known more during his life, thankful to have met my sister’s kids in Atlanta who are the same age as me... “Jamie, once someone is gone, they are gone”, God Bless! Glad to have the Dallas Stars back with the Mav’s struggling as we head towards the trade deadline... Dear Mark Cuban, please don’t trade for that shot blocking, no free throw shooting, grumbler Dwight Howard. Word is that the Lakers want him and coach D’Antoni out! Cowboy’s owner Jerry Jones keeps on talking and it looks like he’s cutting Jason Garrett off at the “Wahonga’s”. Jerry has hired a New defensive Coordinator, firing Rob Ryan and is now ready to take Garrett’s play calling duties away. Jerry, I love you, but it’s time to fire the General Manager, you! Jason, love you man, but when you had to dump your brother from the tight end coaches position, the writing is on the wall! From the land Cowboy’s fans have forgotten: Superbowl 47 is a week away and I must admit to being very happy that Ray Lewis final game will be The Superbowl! Ray’s evolvement from young tough guy, often in the wrong place off the field, while always in the right place on the field has been beautiful! This year he showed the heart that seems to be lacking with some of the Cowboys, coming back from what should have been a season ending torn triceps injury. This is also the 1st Superbowl that features two brother’s the Harbaugh’s as opposing head coaches... Vegas opened with San Francisco a 4 point favorite... My uninformed pick? Baltimore Raven’s 29-24 over the San Francisco 49’ers! Happy birthday to YOU and celebs this week:Aaron Neville 72, George Foreman 65, Steve Harvey 56, Anita baker 55, Hakeem Olajuwon 50, Will Smith 45, Tatyani Ali 34 and Alicia Keys is 32. Thanks for Rollin With A Brottha in The Elite News!

– Through a grant from the Department of Labor, the Urban League of Greater Dallas now offers a career and education development program with service learning opportunities for young adults between the ages 18 and 21.

The Urban Youth Empowerment Program (UYEP) is a 6-8 month long commitment and includes job readiness courses, career and education support, service learning projects, internship placements, and assistance with job placement or enrollment in post-secondary education institution or an industry recognized certification program. For more information contact Stefon Chandler at [email protected] or call (214) 915-4696.

Educators are concerned that cost may prevent students and adults from obtaining a GED test credential. The Urban League’s

UYEP program includes a GED curriculum which is a free program that includes classroom instruction and weekly meetings with an advisor to assess progress. Test fees are waived. Students who qualify for the Urban Youth Empowerment Program also receive tutoring and flexible class hours. To put them on the road for educational success, they receive financial counseling, one-on-one career coaching, and a graduation ceremony upon completion.

Eligible participants must have had contact with the justice system between the ages of 14 and 18 but not charged as an adult, and live in Dallas County. At the close of the program students will leave with a GED or high school diploma, solid skills to enter and compete in the workforce, and a positive relationship with their community.

Youth who have been involved in the juvenile justice system

find themselves uniquely disadvantaged; often they are considerably behind in academic achievement, with little guidance on how to succeed in the workplace.

Communities lose trust in young offenders and offenders continue to feel displaced and disengaged from the community. In addition to providing academic support to earn a GED or high school diploma and training on how to succeed in the workplace, UYEP participants will engage in 448 hours of paid service learning where they develop necessary employment skills while substantively and meaningfully serving their community.

The mission of the Urban League of Greater Dallas and North Central Texas (ULGD) is to provide the critical skills and resources necessary to enable all citizens to secure economic self- reliance.
