THE TOWN HALL FIRE (1925)Herne Bay’s volunteer firemen were on the scene in minutes when fire broke out at the town hall. They didn’t have far to get to the scene – as the building, in William Street, was just around the corner from their High Street station.

The alarm was raised at around 10.30 am on Friday 12th June 1925 when smoke was spot-ted pouring from the north end of the hall. Despite their efforts to contain the blaze, us-ing a steam-pump, it proved a hopeless task. The interior of the building became a raging inferno and eventually the roof collapsed.

Dense smoke drifted across High Street and William Street and thousands of residents and visitors gathered at the scene. Part of the hall comprised Herne Bay Council offices, which extended into the High Street and adjoined the fire station. What made the fire an even more spectacular event was that not only were the offices gutted but the fire station it-self was destroyed. The Town Council had lost its meeting place and the Brigade its home.

Soon after the smoke was seen a chain of willing helpers was formed, when official documents, plans, records and furniture were passed to safety. The high-backed seat, used by the Chairman of the Council (Mr P.E. Ig-gulden), was rescued. But one historic item of furniture, the table around which councillors had sat in public debate over many years, was lost.

The helpers, including councillors, worked desperately to salvage whatever they could, staying in the building until suffering from smoke inhalation. Minutes after a group had left one of the offices the ceiling caved in.

The Ambulance Brigade were called to attend to one of the firemen, who sustained a cut hand from falling glass, and to two women who had fainted.

The town hall, a centre for meetings, dances, “moving picture” shows and a variety of en-tertainment for over 65 years, had been used by the Council since 1873. It was built in 1858 by Mr C.W. Welby. Ironically it was his son, Lieut. Charles Welby of Herne Bay’s Volunteer Fire Brigade, who was in charge of operations that day. He served with the brigade for 57 years, retiring in 1938.

Such was the extent of the damage – the town hall was a blackened shell and the Council offices in ruins – that the entire property was demolished. The site today is occupied by the HSBC. The Fire Brigade acquired a brand new station, opened in February 1932.
