We Are Ready to Break Ground! Madonna Learning Center is a private, independent school for children with disabilities. Our students range in age from 5 to 30 years. Approximately fifty eight children each year are enrolled in our school where educational services are individualized to maximize strengths and diminish challenges. Founded in 1969 by three Benedictine Sisters from Ferdinand, Indiana, the Madonna learning environment is faith-based. The cognitive, social, emo- tional, spiritual, and physical needs of each student are addressed. Families are respected partners, and, together with the center staff, create appropri- ate programs that encourage independence and celebrate all achievements. Initially called "Madonna Day School", our current name of Madonna Learning Center was adopted in 1996 when our school moved to beautiful new facilities in Germantown, Tennessee. Madonna Learning Center holds 501-C3 status as a private, non profit organization in Tennessee. It also success- fully holds SACS accreditation (Southern Association of Colleges and Schools) and is a member agency of the United Way of the Mid-South. ISSUE VOLUM E YEAR

Learning Center

Madonna The Monarch of

Spring 2014 edition

The Madonna Board of Directors have been working hard to launch our capital campaign for much needed improvements of the school and adult program facility. We have been in the quiet phase of the campaign and will be announcing the public phase at the groundbreaking ceremony held on May 14th. Information is attached to the Monarch.

A Word From Our Director Dear friends and families, Madonna has had an exciting action packed year full of new adventures and activities. These would not be possible without the fabulous staff, families, friends, and community supporters. We have exciting plans in the next year and ask for your prayers as we move towards a brighter future in the life of the school. As we move forward, we can use your help more than ever. Thank you and God Bless You!

MLC’s Events throughout the SY 2013—2014 Wow, What an exciting year we have had. Our year has been full of new beginnings.

Eagle Scouts Madonna has been so fortu-nate to have 2 young men who chose to complete their Eagle Scout project for the students. Dominic Keilty from CBHS added a fort and painted games. Matt Fuess from MUS refurbished and built a large play-ground for our younger students.

MLC’s Harvest and Holiday Market In the fall, we hosted our first Harvest and Holiday Market in partnership with the Millstone Market and Nursery. It was a big success and many people completed their Christmas shopping early.

Christmas Play at GPAC The Germantown Performing Arts Center offered their beautiful venue for our an-nual Christmas play. We were a bit nerv-ous about doubling our seating but each performance had over 700 people in at-tendance. Thank you Paul Chandler, Liz Mulroy and Richard Brewer for making our play a success.

The 45th Annual Gala was attended by an outstanding crowd. Chef Steven Leake, Southwest Tennessee Community College Culinary Educator along with his class and many well known chefs from Harrah’s and Horseshoe Casino and the American Culinary Federation Greater Memphis presented an outstanding and elegant spread of delicious food. The evening was filled with the wonderful sounds of the Soul Shockers and auction items for every enthusiast. Thanks to Carol VanCleave and Aggie Fratta, Gala Chairs, and their dedicated committee, the 45th Gala raised over $220,000. Thank you to everyone who helped to make this event a huge suc-cess.

Volunteers Madonna is blessed to have many wonderful volunteers who give their time weekly, tutor students, assist in the library, and coordinate many activities held at the school.

Best Buddies This Spring MLC became the Host school for Best Buddies with our Adult trainees. Plans are to expand this program for all of the school. Our young adults were paired with college students from U of M.

Alumni Madonna hosted a Hal-loween and Christmas dance this year with help from St. Agnes students. Everyone had a won-derful time reconnecting with old friends and making new ones. A swim party is planned for this summer at the Remur’s. For more information, please contact the school.

Website We have launched a new web-site and have added the ease for donat-ing to the school. Please visit our web-site @ www.madonna-learning.org as we move into the future, we will be communicating information about the school via the website. Pease check it often to see the progress of our school. You are also able to make secure online donations including memorials and honorarium gifts.

Celebration Troupe Our performing group, was invited to the John Angotti Christmas Show to perform for his song written specifically for our school. The students did a fabulous job at the Cannon Center and looked beautiful in their concert attire.

MLC’s Events throughout the SY 2013—2014 Wow, What an exciting year we have had. Our year has been full of new beginnings.

Baseball Club Join the Madonna Baseball Club and donate a dollar for every game the Redbirds win during regular season play. Step up to the plate and hit a home-run for our team. Contact our school to be-come a team player in our club.

School Art This year, art was offered during the day for all of our students through a wonderful volunteer. Natalie Harmeier has been teaching the students different textures and craft techniques which will be displayed at our first Art show, May 22 at 6:00 pm in the school cafeteria.

Camp Fly High - Summer Camp Madonna offers an 8 week summer camp full of activities including crafts, games and swimming. Check out our website for more information and regis-tration forms.

Arts for All Our specialized art camp pro-vides experiences across various art forms such as dance, drama and visual arts. Lo-cal artists and therapists will instruct stu-dents through the arts. Forms and applica-tions are located on our website.

Aktion Club This club is sponsored by the Germantown Kiwanis club. The ser-vice oriented club is comprised of our young adult students who earn leader-ship roles in organizing and implement-ing service projects for the community. They have provided work projects and fundraising for the Humane Society, Ave Maria and raise money.

Silver Foxes The Silver Foxes are retired men who are members of the Knights of Columbus and provide wood-working shop class for our students. Stu-dents are able to use “real” tools to cre-ate amazing wooden projects that are sold throughout the year.

Grandparents Day We celebrate our grandparents by inviting them to share lunch with the students. It is a big success with many grandparents in attendance.

The Germantown Garden Club Each year the ladies of the Garden Club sup-ply flowers and vases for our students to create beautiful arrangements for our students mothers for Mother’s Day.

After School Programs Madonna offers activities, which include Visual Art, Yoga, Dance and Drama. Experts provide training at Madonna and Ballet Memphis.

Days of Caring Many businesses have chosen Madonna to share a United Way Day of Caring. Thanks to Baptist Memo-rial Hospital, FedEx, St. Agnes, and FACS.

Graduation Four students (Shelby Stewart, Emily Kirk, William Merrill, and Warren Curtis) graduated last year. This year, we have two more students gradu-ating into the Adult Program (Caroline Williamson and Wesley Baucum).

Special Events in the Community We are so fortunate to have many local schools who offer various field day, carnival, dances and activities for our students. Madonna loves their dedication and support for our

Prom 2013 50 students from Jr. High, Sr. High and the Adult Pro-gram gathered for a special eve-ning of dinner and dancing. The students enjoyed dinner at Grisanti’s and dancing to live mu-sic by The Prom Kings.

Brittany’s Day A fun day of festivities to celebrate a Gala live auction item where we name a street after a student. Brit-tany enjoyed being queen for the day and unveiling her street signs named in her honor.
