MEMBER EVENTS
Bridgetine Soirée – 1st December 2013
The last event for the year 2013 was the Bridgetine Soirée, an evening
of song, dance and comedy much enjoyed by the Bridgetines and their
families. This was held on December 1st heralding in the Christmas
season with a bang.
The Cinnamon Lakeside Ballroom was the setting for this
exciting evening of entertainment.
Thanks to the generosity of many sponsors, all
guests were provided with ‘Give aways’ consisting
of a miscellany of items upon entry, much to their
surprise and delight. Adding lustre to the occasion
was the simple but elegant décor, in black and
gold, complemented by the same combination of
colours worn by the committee members and also the
guests. Wine, with compliments of the house, added much to lift the spirits of the guests,
in more ways than one.
Scintillating music by the group BLACK, which name incidentally totally tied in with the theme colours, started
off the evening, which even in the early hours saw the feisty Bridgetines on the floor. Several entertainment
items were on the agenda to provide variety and to cater to both the young and active and the not so
young and more sedentary guests. A rip roaring performance by the veteran comedian cum actor Mr Wilson
Gunaratne had the audience in stitches. His impersonations of public personalities and also those of different
nationalities were absolutely spot on. The one and only Mignone Fernando, a proud Bridgetine, brought back
many memories with her melodious singing. Indu Dharmasena and her team entertained the crowd with a side splitting skit, set in a local
scenario. Ronnie Leitch in his inimitable style was able to hold the crowd with his witty comments and maintain a crowded dance floor with his
comic verses set in Baila rhythm.
A raffle draw was held with three prizes being given. The much coveted first prize was a return air ticket to Bangkok. The finger
food and drink served at the tables did much to satisfy the appetites of the hungry guests, and was later followed by a heartier
Mongolian barbeque. The Soirée continued well past midnight with unflagging vigour displayed by the Bridgetines. From the
feedback obtained, both written and verbal, the event was a resounding success.

St. Bridget’s Day – 1st February 2014February 1st saw the Bridgetines gathered together at the school chapel to
offer prayers for the school and all religious, teachers, students and staff
associated with the school, both past and present. The altar was beautifully
decorated with pristine white flowers. The celebrant and preacher was the
much respected Rev. Fr Neil Karunaratne. Contempo, the past Bridgetines’
choir added much lustre to the service with their melodious harmony
in song. The mass was followed by an evening of fellowship at the
Primary School grounds.
The presence of a large number of members, Rev.
Sisters and several Past Presidents was indeed
most gratifying. The evening commenced with a
welcome address by the President, Dr. Nirmala
Pieris who also gave a brief review of the past
activities of the Association for
the benefit of the members.
The venue was beautifully set
out with little fairy lights, and
chairs and tables bedecked in
green and white. Although heavy skies portended rain, much to the
consternation of the organizers, St. Joseph majestically standing high
with an umbrella, did the needful and kept faith with the Bridgetines,
staving off the rain, keeping the evening cool and dry. After the welcome drink of iced
coffee and delicious chocolate cake, fun and games were part of the fellowship where both
young and not so young avidly participated. A scrumptious dinner was served to the members
fairly early, to make time for the inevitable dancing which is an indispensable part of any
Bridgetine function. An enjoyable evening was the sentiment expressed by many of those present.

It is with much sorrow and regret that we record the tragic death of
our dear friend, schoolmate and PPA member, Mel Gunasekera. Mel
was the Assistant Vice President at Fitch Ratings Lanka and a senior
business Journalist. We grieve for her untimely and brutal death, and
record that the last function she was seen at was the St Bridget’s Day
celebration. The many ‘if only’ surrounding her death are only too sad
to contemplate. Mel will be sorrowfully missed by her schoolmates
and also members of ‘Contempo’, the past pupils’ choir of which
she was an active member. We convey our heartfelt sympathies to
her family. Mel was truly a role model for all of us whose lives she
touched. ... May she rest in eternal peace.
Those we love don’t go away,
They walk beside us every day,
Unseen, unheard, but always near,
Still loved, still missed and very dear.

Netball Fiesta – 1st March 2014The final event organized by the incumbent committee during their term of office, was the Netball
Fiesta. The event was a momentous one for the Association as it marked the handing over of an
upgraded and reconstructed asphalt surfaced Netball court to the school. Much enthusiasm
and keenness was displayed by netballers of all ages, irrespective of the fact that most
of them had not played the game after leaving school. As befitting the religious practices
of the Convent, the programme for the day commenced with a blessing of the court by
Rev Fr. Gehan Gunatilleke. The official handing over of
the Court to the school was done with the symbolic
passing of two netballs by the President to Rev.
Sr. Solange Fernando and Rev. Sr. Shermila Jayawardena.
The presence of Ms Cynthia
Rasquinho, the school Sports Teacher
from 1948 – 1977 as a Special
Guest, was indeed a highlight of the
event. The attendance of nine Past
Presidents of the PPA was much appreciated as was the presence of the Presidents of the Past Pupils’ Associations of all four schools invited
to participate viz. Bishops College, Good Shepherd Convent, Kotahena, Holy Family Convent, Bambalapitiya and Ladies College, signifying their
friendship and support. Mention must also be made of the instant Facebook updates that kept the Bridgetines around the globe well informed
and the Facebook competitions prior to the event which again helped to build up the pre-event excitement and anticipation.
The winners of the under 35 age group was Melizan House, over 35 age group Griaux House, and over 50 Coudert House. Exhibition matches
were also played between the winners of the over 35 group and the present students, and a over 50s mixed group with the Rev. Sisters. Several
prizes and appreciation awards were given.
All in all it was a good day of fun and frolic with a valuable contribution to the school too. The Netball Fiesta was the swan song of the 2013/14
PPA committee who through its term, strived hard to provide enjoyable and memorable moments to its membership….. Adieu

Work on the construction of a new Netball court for the Collegiate school was initiated on
12th November 2013. This new Asphalt court (with movable goal posts, movable score
board etc.) is a total upgrade of the clay court that the School had all this time. The court
is located in close proximity to the much loved Banyan tree. The Netball court project was
totally funded with finances generated by the activity ‘Bridgetine Challenge & Beat show’
held in July 2013. This project was the largest and most important School project of the
PPA for the period 2013/2014. The total cost of the construction and ancillary facilities
was Rs.1,247,500/-. The court was handed over to the school on 1st March 2014 during
