GRID25 NEWSLETTER Issue No 7. April 2012 Grid25 is EirGrid’s strategy for the long-term development of Ireland’s transmission system. The strategy aims to support economic growth and job creation, provide a reliable supply of electricity for all consumers, provide the infrastructure to enable Ireland to realise its renewable potential and achieve the challenging target of delivering 40% of electricity generated from renewable sources by 2020. The Government Policy Statement on the Strategic Importance of Transmission and Other Energy Infrastructure 2012 specifically endorses and supports the Grid25 investment programme and reaffirms that it is Government policy and in the national interest. Recent Grid25 project and programme highlights are outlined below. GRID25 Public consultation is underway on two of EirGrid’s largest Grid25 projects, the Grid West and the Grid Link projects. Since the launch of the Grid West project by An Taoiseach, Enda Kenny in May 2012, the project team has engaged in an extensive programme of public consultation as per the EirGrid project development roadmap. The second round of public consultation took place in August/September 2012 involving a series of five open days across the western region. Following this second round of public consultation, the Constraints Report will be finalised and EirGrid will publish an overall Stage 1 Report. This report will present all the information gathered to date as well as the identification of feasible corridors and station sites. The report is expected to be published in early 2013, at which time the public and other stakeholders will be given the opportunity to review the report and provide feedback. The Grid West project will initially consist of a new high capacity power line linking Bellacorick in County Mayo to a strong point on the transmission grid in the West, either to Flagford in Co. Roscommon or Cashla in Co. Galway. The key driver for this investment of €240 million is the integration of renewable energy sources. To ensure future electrical power needs are met in the South and East of Ireland, EirGrid is developing the Grid Link project, a €500 million investment consisting of a new high voltage power line linking Leinster and Munster. The key drivers for this project are security of supply, the integration of renewable energy sources, the facilitation of future interconnection and long-term demand growth. The second stage of public consultation on the Grid Link project took place between August and October 2012 involving a series of thirteen Open Days across the Grid Link Study Area. During early 2013, EirGrid will outline feasible corridor options for the Grid Link Project. The public and all interested parties will be asked to comment on the corridors identified and to provide feedback on the criteria that should be used to determine a least constrained corridor. Public consultation is underway on two of EirGrid’s largest Grid25 projects, the Grid West and the Grid Link projects.
To ensure future electrical power needs are met in the South and East of Ireland, EirGrid is developing
the Grid Link project, a €500 million investment consisting of a new high voltage power line linking Leinster and munster.

Planning permission in relation to the proposed overhead 110kV line between the existing Clashavoon 220/110kV substation and the existing dunmanway 110kV substation was granted by An Bord Pleanála in October 2012. The new development is required to reinforce the transmission network in south west Cork, thus increasing the security of supply in the area and also facilitating the connection of renewable generation.
Please see the project website for further information: www.eirgridprojects.com/projects/clashavoondunmanway
EirGrid submitted the planning application for the new kinnegad-mullingar 110kV circuit to An Bord Pleanála in july 2012. An Environmental Report (including an Environmental Impact Assessment Screening Report) was prepared in respect of the proposed development. The application and environmental report may be inspected at the following locations:
•The Offices of An Bord Pleanála, 64 marlborough Street, dublin 1;
•The Offices of Westmeath County Council, County Buildings, mullingar, Co. Westmeath;
•The Offices of meath County Council, County hall, Navan, Co. meath.
The application may be viewed on the following website: www.mullingar110kVproject.ie
This new circuit, an investment of €16m in the midlands region, will help secure electricity supply to the area which if lost would affect both residential and business customers.

kINNEGAd - muLLINGAR 110kV NEW LINE – PLANNING APPLICATION LOdGEd
A planning lodgement was recently submitted to An Bord Pleanála for the proposed development of a new 220kV station in dublin. The dublin North Fringe 220kV reinforcement project will consist of a new 220kV station located off the N32 at Belcamp.
The new station will reinforce the electricity supplies for both the North City and County and represents an investment of approximately €70 million in the region. The 220kV station will be connected into Finglas 220kV station by cable.

Dublin North Fringe 220kV New Station layout
The Flagford to Srananagh 220kV line was energised in August 2012. This new transmission line now provides a much needed 220kV boost for the North West region meeting the requirements of demand growth and security of supply for industry, business and domestic customers.
The project components included:• Construction of a new 220kV station at Srananagh,
in County Sligo • Construction of a new 220kV line from the existing
station at Flagford County Roscommon to the new station at Srananagh
•The looping of two existing 110kV lines into Srananagh requiring 34km of new line build
• The construction of 11km of new 110kV line from Srananagh to Sligo
The new 220kV line is 56km in length and runs in a general northwesterly direction avoiding technical and environmental constraints that were identified during the planning process. In total, 172 new
lattice steel single circuit 220kV towers have been constructed along the route. The steel for the intermediate towers was manufactured using a special process which reduced the quantity of lattice bracing required and achieved a ‘Reduced Visual Impact’ design.
The completion of this project is attributable to a dedicated, hard-working and multi-talented team from EirGrid, ESB Networks and ESB International.
The 2012 National Ploughing Championships were held in New Ross, County Wexford over three days in September. EirGrid’s exhibition area was the largest to date and told the story of transmission infrastructure in Ireland using pictures, videos, web links, artefacts, games, a scale model and a live link to the National Control Centre. The marquee also showcased the Schools Science Programme and the Grid Link project.
Over 12,000 visitors engaged with the 25-strong EirGrid team of staff volunteers over the three days, and many had the opportunity to talk to and listen to a wide variety of stakeholders.
