‘One looks back with appreciation to the brilliant teachers, but with gratitude to those who touched our human feelings. The curriculum is so much necessary raw material, but warmth is the vital element for the growing plant and for the soul of the child.’

Positive Choices and Rewards (Appendix 1)
Positive behaviour choices are rewarded and taught at Kellands. Every class has an
established listening process such as circle time, bubble time and Friendship Terrace (P1-
3). The golden rules are displayed and referred to.
To encourage and model the positive behaviour we want to see, a merit card system is in
place based on the house captain model.
Merit cards each week may be given by an adult in the school where they have observed a
pupil making a positive choice which reflects the school rules and courtesy code. Merit
cards will be put by the children into designated House containers with one situated in
each unit. This is to encourage a shared responsibility to positive behaviour. Merit cards
will also be given out in relation to the 4 capacities, Successful Learner, Confident
Individual, Responsible Citizen and Effective Contributor. The merit cards will be counted
weekly by the House Captains and shared with everyone at Assembly.
At lunchtime there will be red and green laminate cards for the tables. If your table
earns a green one you get a point for your house and if you get a red one you forfeit your
place and are last to get lunch (for noisy and disruptive behaviour) and you lose a point
for your house.
Kellands Trophies
Each time there is a whole school assembly there will be a trophy awarded to a pupil in
each Unit for a particular behavioural or curricular area (e.g. bravery, kindness, problem
Page 3
solving…)
Certificates/Post Cards
Each week 2 children per class will be awarded certificates/postcards in a particular area
and handed out by the Class Teacher at Assembly.
Each class will operate their own class behaviour system such as Class Dojo, Table points
and there will be an emphasis in rewarding good work and behaviour.

Merit Cards
From next term merit cards will be awarded to individuals towards house points only, as
stated in the Behaviour Policy above. We realise that some children will be very close to
achieving their next badge so in recognition of this - anyone working towards a bronze,
silver or gold badge can exchange 4 shinies and 4 merit cards for their badge, anyone
working towards a platinum or house colour badge can exchange 4 shinies for their badge
and anyone working towards the Head Teacher Award can exchange 8 shinies for their
badge.
All shinies and merit cards that are not exchanged for badges should be put in the House
containers located in each unit.
Aims and Expectations:
At Kellands we strive to provide a caring ethos where everyone in the school community
feels safe, confident, valued and respected. By promoting an environment where everyone
can live and work together in a supportive way enables all to reach their full potential,
emotionally, socially and intellectually. The primary aim of our behaviour policy is to
promote good behaviour. We have school rules and the Kellands Courtesy Code. Staff do
not ignore unacceptable behaviour, but have high expectations, are good role models.
Rewarding pupils enables us to promote positive behaviour. This policy is designed to
promote good behaviour rather than merely deter antisocial behaviour.
Please see the whole policy on the website
