Building Works Many of you will have noticed that the construction of the Goulburn Murray Trade Skill Centre is now well and truly underway on our Archer Street boundary. In addition to this very substantial piece of work we are also anticipating further works around the College over the coming two terms, this will include:

a. The refurbishment of a classroom into a modern and fully functional facility for a doctor as part of the Doctors In Secondary Schools program, including a dedicated GP Room, office space, waiting room and disabled toilet

b. $400,000 of maintenance works which we are currently negotiating with Taylor Oppenheim Architects and the Victorian School Building Authority

As all three projects advance we will keep you up to date with information and images. Curriculum Days College Council has set the final three Curriculum Days (Pupil Free) for the remainder of 2017. These are:

• Wednesday 31st May – staff will be focusing on Curriculum Transformation

• Monday 17th July – staff will focus their professional learning for this day around STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering & Maths)

• Wednesday 6th September – the focus of this day is yet to be determined

Senior School Report

It has been a terrific first Term in 2017, with our Year 10-12 students settling in beautifully. Students have been focused on achieving their personal best and have set the solid foundations in Term 1 to support their learning throughout the year ahead. It was pleasing to see so many parents supporting their children at Parent Teacher Interviews and we encourage families to contact the College at any time if they wish to discuss their students’ progress. We are looking forward to another concentrated and engaging Term 2, with many exciting opportunities planned for our McGuire College community.

Megan Michalaidis (10-12 Assistant Principal)

Year 12 Report Our Year 12s have settled into Term 1 and are well and truly looking forward to a well-deserved break over the holidays. On the 7th of March Year 12s attended an excursion to Eastbank for the Drive 4 Life presentation. This was attended by many schools in the region. Students heard from guest speakers from Robyn Greening whose son was a trauma victim after a high-speed accident, Tunya Jarvis an emergency nurse who deals with trauma victims on a daily basis and Sergeant Higgins of Victoria Police who has attended three fatal car accidents in three days. Students were able to reflect on the important messages surrounding road safety. Year 12 students acknowledged and celebrated International Women’s Day and discussed in depth the importance of equality. Our attendance levels for Year 12s are still very high. Let’s try to keep this up. Students have been doing a fantastic job at being accountable and tracking their attendance. Congratulations to the large number of students still sitting on 100%. Over the next two weeks I would encourage all Year 12s to reflect on their SPA reports and make a real effort to improve them for Term 2. Have a great holiday everyone, complete your homework but also ensure you take some time to relax. Stay safe…. A big congratulations to Xander Brereton who came first in the 50m breaststroke, backstroke and freestyle at the Hume Region Swimming Championship. He will now be heading to state finals later in the year.

Carly Hooper (Year 12 Year Level Leader)

Year 11 Report Over the past month, we have been very busy! A large portion of Year 11’s went to senior sport, taking part in bowling, tennis, handball and many more representing McGuire in a fantastic manner. All students took part in a session called ‘Making Better Choices’. Students have had numerous assessments in all their classes. All Year 11 students need to remember that if they are away sick for a SAC (School Assessed Coursework) they will need a medical certificate otherwise they will receive a zero. This process replicates the assessment protocols for unit 3 and 4 subjects. Students also need to ensure that they attend all their classes and focus on improving their attendance and overall year level attendance average. Let’s have the best attendance at McGuire!!! Under two weeks until holidays and I encourage every Year 11 student to continue their excellent work ethic to the end of term!

Paige Martin (Year 11 Year Level Leader)

Year 10 Report This past month has been exceedingly busy for the Year 10 students. Many of them represented the College in senior summer sports, with a number of students returning bearing medals and trophies to demonstrate their excellence. The Year 10s also attended a ‘Keys Please’ seminar to find out the ins and outs of getting their license and the challenges that they will face as new drivers. They also attended a ‘Cyber Safety Seminar’ at SHS to learn the importance of online security, particularly when interacting on social media. This was followed by a visit from the education liaison from Shepparton Police station where the students talked about the repercussions of violence and bullying. A whole school assembly had the Year 10s involved in taking ‘Action against violence and bullying’ where they were then able to sign a piece of material to show they will stand against bullying. With only one and a half weeks left until the holidays, the Year 10s are looking forward to their break.

Year 7 & 8 Science – By Paige Martin In Year 7 science we have been having so much fun exploring how different mixtures can be separated. We have been focusing on natural water supplies such as the Goulburn River and how pollution can contaminate the water supply. Students in 7C have been extremely creative, designing and building a water tower that could hold one cup of water. We have also looked at how different substances react in the water, are they soluble or insoluble? This week, we have explored how to make dirty and muddy water clean again. Students have investigated a variety of techniques to clean water and learnt how to create their own water cleaning device that could be used to clean the river water for Shepparton.

In Year 8 science, we are focusing on different types of cells. This week, students had the opportunity to draw and create models for plant cells. All students in 8C had the opportunity to research one specialized plant cell, explaining the function and where the cell was found. After completing the research, we had a great time creating cell models out of play dough. You are never too old to play with play dough in class! Next week, we will focus on using microscopes, zooming in and seeing plants in a different perspective!

Public Speaking and Debating The public speaking and debating group have been working hard this term practicing and preparing for a range of competitions coming up this year. The Year 7s and 8s have had the opportunity to participate in a virtual debating competition which was organised by the DET. The Year 8s have participated in two debates this term against Hawkesdale College losing their first debate by 0.1 points and winning their second debate by 0.4 points. The students really enjoyed using the Virtual Learning Centre and the PolyCom link to participate in these debates and look forward to continuing them next term. Coming up next term, the public speaking and debating

group also have the Rostrum Voice of Youth competition and the Plain English Speaking Award early on and will be practicing in preparation for these competitions. Nicole Craighead

Year 10 Outdoor Education Last Thursday the Year 10 Outdoor Ed class went on their first trip for 2017, a canoeing adventure from Mitchellstown bridge into Nagambie down the Goulburn river. The weather was mixed with rain falling for the first hour or so before it cleared into a beautiful afternoon. The students had a fantastic time exploring the river and surrounding areas and represented the school with great distinction. We were able to put the skills we had been practicing into use with a couple of capsizes, while our paddling strokes improved with every kilometre travelled. Credit goes to the boys who worked as a team and got to our destination in good time. Andrew Nicholls
